Shaw in pristine form, he should play ODIs, good for Covid rotation policy of the national team, give a break to Rohit Sharma

It's awesome to see him come roaring back.  Sometimes a little kick-in-the-butt works wonders for young people.  Let's see if the selectors take advantage of his form or say "he must first play more domestics".  With him and Padikkal, the ODI opening future looks very bright!

Even if he is a 50% better fielder than he was before being dropped, he will be an asset.

Has to improve his fitness and agility. For a 21 year he is not athletic at all. With a receding hairline and a lazy body language, he will always have odds stacked against him

50 for Devdutt now . It doesn't matter who wins the contest, both should be in Indias T20 squad atleast

No Paddikal. He is more of a run a ball player.Prithvi..yes if he works on his fitness, attitude and defence. He needs to stop getting out within 3-4 balls in international cricket. Too predictable

Yes ODI’s. It’s important that they are groomed for the right format. Prithvi can play both. Paddikal has to improve his strike rate

When is the ODI team against Eng to be announced?

Shaw, and Padikkal to some extent, has forced them to make a call on him. The last ODI series against Aus demonstrated the muddled thinking at the top with no clear vision for WC'23. They played Dhawan who everyone can see is getting on in age with diminishing output. Mayank featured in two matches and was discarded for Gill in third. So does Gill keep his place as an opener?

This nonsense will continue till they don't have the courage to dump Dhawan for good. Play Rohit as opener with Shaw as his partner, and then take a call whether Gill or Padikkal is to be taken as the back-up opener. This is the way forward to me.

Most probably this may happen .

No Dhawan  in T20 in atleast 3-4 games if we go by Virat's Presser. So they will accommodate Dhawan in 50 overs  and by the looks of TM , he is in contention for WC 2013 . Rohit will be rested for 50 overs .

Would be better to stick to Gill for 50 overs vs Eng series , just to get confidence back as he did not do much in tests.

Am not keen to bring Shaw back so early for following reasons -

1)  By rushing him this early what if he fails again. ?

2)  Let him work further to iron out his deficiencies . Still have a feel rising balls at high pace at his body above rib cage , he seems to loose control over the shot

3)  Let him pass the Fitness test- This is important . Message should be clear - just talent without fitness & safe catching will not give India cap .

4)  become a safer catcher .

5)  make him wait a bit more to get the  spot back again. Should really feel that getting back the spot is really hard if you let go .

6)  Real test should be in IPL as the standard of opening Pace bowling of different  teams way better than any one  single country may be barring AUS.

Post IPL , he should play  in Asia cup and any other bilateral .

My hunch - he will have a good IPL , the way he batted with controlled aggression in last 2 innings now.

OTOH, being 21 buys him time to commit himself to becoming fit.  The question is - is he coachable?

Based on the evidence so far, perhaps not yet. Lacks professional guidance around him. Will need someone's strong mentorship to take his immense potential to international success.

Maybe as and when an opportunity opens up, even a county stint could set him on the right path.

I think he is willing to get coached in batting, but he needs to rediscover for himself the passion/hunger to increase general fitness; this is something that has to come from within.

the 2 best batters of VHT lit up the scene. shaw's been awesome so far. although most of his matches were not televised, based on the 200 I saw (admittedly against a super-weak Pondi-cherry attach), he has made some minor technical tweaks; a bit more of the classical back-and-across movement. If he can work more on the following, he can become an ATG: (i) fitness, (ii) attitude (needs to stop throwing his bat at everything in int'l cricket), and (iii) receding hairline.

4 of shaw's tons from newest to oldest. What changes you notice? He  has made some adjustments.

.... Clear back and across trigger movement now   ( earlier his back leg moved away from the stumps )

.... Back-lift seems a little lesser

.... Bat is probably coming down a bit straighter too

.Hence he is playing the ball under his eyes more frequently and has a better idea of where his off stump is and may have a bit more time to play.  He is pulling much better too

.

Only thing to guard against with this style is getting out LBW.
