Time to admit it was a good ride with Umesh, Shami, Ishant era and it peaked with Bumrah and plateaued with Siraj. Rest look like crap. It’s not about pace anymore:

the guys I mentioned still hit 135-145 effortlessly. Always seem to be fit. They might have bad days but still bowl jaffas and don’t lose pace.

these Sainis, Mavis, Sens can’t last a spell in internationals and far from reliable.

Enjoying the  speed gun is fun but don’t see any additional skills and even pace isn’t that great.

Umran is the only one with  some bright spot but his career is being destroyed.

Kuldeep Sen does not fall into this 2nd category.

I have seen him bowl 30+ overs in an innings and still bowl well at pace near the end of the day.

The key is FC cricket.

We must choose pacers who have played a lot of FCC.  Bumrah, Shami, Siraj, Umesh and Ishant have all done this. Sen has played some too.

While Mohsin, Prasidh, Tyagi, Khaleel, Nagarkoti etc. haven't played much FCC

Harshit Rana and Kaverappa are playing some FCC nowadays.

That's exactly what we should NOT be doing for every single pacer. Fast bowlers are not meant to bowl in all 3 formats.

Their workloads should be managed very carefully. No point flogging the likes of Unran in domestic cricket if the aim is to have them bowling peak speeds in ICC tournaments.

fair enough but I remember Sen getting injured in the middle of the game. Yes injuries happen but these guys have to grab chances. All these optics add up.

Pandya is a better international bowler especially in LOIs than most of these guys but he is injury prone and is a huge risk playing him as a proper 3rd seamer most times which messes up the balance. I don’t blame the management having doubts especially when they have no other skills to offer and are even poor in the field.

that’s my observation. Let’s hope they have a better resurgence.

Umran has bowled well in every opportunity he got, throws himself around in the field and bowled his heart out and is touchwood  injury free so far. No problem backing such bowlers.

Ind should have started replacing Umesh, Ishant and Shami. In last 2/3 years Only Siraj has made it into test bowling stock.

Sen, Tiyagi, Rana not getting a chance in this year IPL after a good first season is a reflection of how Ind TM thinking.

If Ind Intnl team will prefer 130ish bowlers then IPL teams will do the same with Ind bowlers wanting to get 1/2 players into Ind side. We saw same thing when all IPL captains were batting at #4 for their respective IPL sides so that they can show their credentials at #4 and have a shot at Ind side.

Even teams are re-cycling players like Chawala, MIshra , Mohit Sharma. There is no standout bowler/batters in this season.

Umesh has slowed down drastically this year.

The decline in pace is evident. I’ve never seen him bowl this slow in the ipl. It’s gonna follow in test cricket too. It’s high-time we seek replacements. He’s done his job at the international level.
The decline in Shami’s pace is relatively lower. Still a couple of years back, he used to hit 90 mph or 145 plus literally every match. It’s more like 137-142 these days.

This being WC year could be trying to avoid any injury, nt sure why Siraj is going in overdrive. But Shami is down in pace for sure.

I think Umran is asked to concentrate on line and length though he does not bowl that many wides or off-line balls compared to other ind bowlers.

If Bhumrah recovers in time then Umran is out of WC 15 member team. This TM is inclined towards 130ish bowlers. Bowlers who are side lined in their IPL teams are making into Ind team- Unadkat, Mavi, Saini, Mukesh Kumar.

The only good thing this season has been that no true sub-140 kmph bowler making into race to purple cap and Selfish players like KL are getting exposed how they are costing teams games or adding much pressure than required on their batting partners and their bowlers to defend par/sub par total.

Akash Singh has a good energetic runup and good action, is there a possibility if he can up his pace to 140's ?
He so far is in 130-135 range, but looks to me as someone who doesn't get fazed by the opposition batters and tries to execute his plans.
If he can up his pace by 5-10 kph, he will be someone for the future as he's still very young (20 maybe).

Akash was a bit quicker in u19 World Cup. He was bowling around 135 with the occasional 140+ delivery. I thought he would get quicker as he gets older and stronger but he has slowed down now.

I haven't watched him much in this IPL ... but I saw him in a List A game some time back.

And my impression at that time was that he was losing rhythm in an attempt to bowl with effort. If he rectified that then he would probably be quicker.

He is bowling 131-137, currently. It doesn't look like he will get much quicker, may become 135-142, bowler like Arshdeep in the next 2-3 years. Arshdeep used to be slower than him.

I don't think Akash is looking to bowl quick in this IPL. He understood Dhoni that's why he is playing and Hangargekar is out.

I think Dhoni likes control. Parthirana was hitting 145 at times but he is a very accurate bowler like Malinga.

but then again he rates Deshpande higher who has the worst control and wayward.

just one of those Dhoni things :dontknow:

Show me a great or even good quick bowler who has not played sufficient FC Cricket  ?

Marshall played over 300 excluding tests.  Even an express pacer like Lee played 40 FC matches excluding tests.

The body does not get used to bowling quick unless one learns to bowl.15+ overs a day.

These pacers hardly play and are not match fit.  And you want them to rest even more !!!!

@Nikhil_cric

Number of balls bowled by various really quick pacers in their careers, and balls per year bowled + total FC matches played.

Marshall      96,800+ balls   @ 7,450 balls per year approx ....  408 FC matches

Donald   80,000+ balls    @ 4,200 balls per year approx  ....  316 FC matches

Lee    40,000+  balls   @ 2,650 balls per year approx .... 116 FC matches

Johnson  35,000+ balls   @ 2,700 balls per year approx  .. 117 FC matches

Starc  33,000+ balls    @ 2,350 balls per year approx .... 128 FC matches

Umran Malik  2,100+ balls    @  1,050 balls per year approx. .... 7 FC matches

What Umran needs is to bowl much more in actual matches, including many FC matches, rather then rest. Bowling just 4 overs a day won't help him develop as a sturdy bodied bowler.
