Lol@people in this thread believing india's official numbers and still clinging to "desi immunity #1".

moron

pakistanis - deny subterfuge warp truth lie to manage perception

Indians - look at reality and react, do not pre empt and plan so often falter and then act decisive.

This is the nature of how the two groups react to adversity.

No one here will worry about what western press says about numbers - its  the peoples suffering that matters and that is what is being discussed.

How many people got vaccinated in Pak lol ??

My dad simply refuses to change his life style. He would fwd all these idiotic whatsapp forwards to me that his scummy friends/ acquaintances and business partners would send him to convince me that risking an outing on that particular day was not that big a deal. My mom also has a very cavalier attitude to the situation. She would even go to her practice right upto this lockdown. And its her practice, she doesn't have to go!

What do you do when you parents behave like children? There are days I'd even almost cry about it. And they are the very social types who are used to entertaining a lot of people.

Thankfully both of them have gotten both their jabs. And I can breathe a huge sigh of relief.

There should be a special rung in jahannum reserved for those who conjure up all this nonsense and send it across on whatsapp.

I genuinely think this is a first world disease for a third world country. Our behaviours are not cut for this one. Better to just get vaccinated and back our immunity from there. Walking 100 m I asked 10 people to wear their their mask properly. And this is when pandemic is at its peak.
Sometimes I think we are overthinking. I don’t know anymore.

Not that I disagree. But your own parents vs people you come across on a road. Different levels of stress to manage. I told my mom to curtail movement only for a short while.

She starts quoting Ben Franklin in return:

If you give up a little bit of liberty for some temporary safety, you deserve neither.

If I were staying with them, it's easier to handle/throw a hissy fit and all of that. Not so much over the phone.

Like I mentioned, I'm so glad they are done with both rounds of vaccinations.

Not a myth. We were prescribed Betadine when we had covid.

Isn't that an iodine skin ointment?

Listerine is a mouthwash.

What's the connect?

Another really hilarious myth:

Gargling with Listerine before bed reduces chances of Corona infection.

Helps with gum disease, bad breath  etc though. Hope that is not considered a myth. :)

Well I second everything, having gone through 14 days roller coaster at home. From a distance, it more difficult but in a way less infuriating. And your mother isn’t wrong either. I am just not sure anymore where should we be in the spectrum from carefree to fearful. This is a generation which has survived polio and small pox. They are no push overs. It is true that they become more and more like children as they grow old. I also think there is an intuitive wisdom in what they say. I am not sure how much of our response is driven by western media and social media. I doubt sometimes if loosening the grip is best way.

A pandemic is a libertarian's nightmare in many ways.  And as one who would vehemently agree with Mariyam's mother during good times, there are situations that that supersede individual liberty.

My operative attitude during this pandemic is this -

  • Individual liberties are paramount, as long as they don't infringe on others' individual liberties, which are just as paramount as my individual liberty.
  • Thus, the pandemic is not just about me or my illness.  It's also about how I affect others. I could become infected, be asymptomatic, but infect someone else who could fall sick and end up in the ICU.  Think of it like second-hand smoke.

I will do everything I can to minimize my contribution to the spread.  I cannot zero it, but it will be the absolute minimum.  I have not got my eye-test done, my cars have not been serviced in 14 months, and I go to the grocery store once a week for <45 min.  If we run out of something, eff it, eat something else.  Bananas are not my birthright.

Not everyone has that privilege.  I have a job where I can work from home.  But other people must work outside their homes and earn a living.  They are at risk already, do your part to minimize their risk.
