lady has swag. Something about her composure.

Atanu sorry to say had the choking vibe written all over him

Excellent composed throws by Kaur. Hope she gets a medal. Heard she is kind of a prodigy, havent played any Asian or Commonwealth games but directly selected for Olympics because of her talents. Great stuff

What’s next guys. Don’t give a damn for any event if there isn’t any Indian athlete

Shooting event (50m rifle 3 positions) in 8 minutes, but qualification round isn't telecast, you must check the Olympics site for that. Final will be telecast, will let you know if we make it that far.

Women's hockey against RSA at 08:45 IST

Badminton SF Sindhu vs Tai Tzu at 15:20 IST

Pooja Rani's boxing QF at 15:36 IST

Men's Long Jump around the same time, skip it since it will overlap with the above 2 (both imp from medals pov)

Atanu Das dissapoint again..

Nerves of butter...

Don't want to see Deepika, Atanu and Tarundeep anywhere near Archery.

They are not good enough.

Can't believe we don't have any other young archers.

We have been carrying these oldies for last 12 years in every tournament and everytime they faltered.

Mental Midgets.

Don’t think they are quota or limitations on how many Indians can qualify for these same events. You can surely field upto 2 or 3 at least from a country. So if more Indians could make it through qualifications, then they would have been here. These were probably the best. We have to live with that. Others who did not make it here just sucked and need to up their game too.

Excellent Kamalpreet Kaur!!! Champion stuff so far...

As usual Seema Punia ( playing for over decade ) showcased that if you haven't got it, it's better to step aside.

But Indian athletes from different sports just keeping hoging youngsters space and keep participating in all competition where a youngster can be groomed. Archery is a classic example of that and weightlifting is example of a sport where every 4 year new talent are introduced at world stage.

Mirabai Chanu failed 5 of her 6 lifts in Rio. Snatch was 82 kg, clean and jerk failed to lift 103 kg.

This time snatch 87 kg, clean and jerk 115 kg......easy silver.

Abhinav Bindra struck gold only in his 3rd Olympics, made the final in Athens but cleared that final hurdle in Beijing with a final shot of 10.8 under immense pressure. Saurabh (10m air pistol) at the age of 19 looked a million bucks 3 out of 4 times he shot in the range, his time will come.

Not the end of the world for other athletes, take inspiration from the Manipuri girl and our only individual gold medalist, come back stronger in 3 years time. Hope this experience makes them stronger.....obviously doesn't apply to the mentally weak archers but for many of our Olympians there is potential.

We keep saying that Indians only care for Cricket but faxt is it is the only sport at world level in which we have excelled.

Despite so much of money being poured in other sports there are no results.

Which Indian kid would like to see Boxing of Amit Panghal and would like to be like him ?

Think sports like weightlifting, boxing, wrestling are so strength based and/or high paced, short duration, energy sapping that it doesn't leave much room for choking. Let's call this category A.

In sports like shooting, archery, tennis (even cricket) plenty of alone time where the athlete will be contemplating, allowing wavering thoughts, indecisiveness/fear/anxiety basically all types of negative emotions creep in....most chance of choking. Category B.

Indians are simply not mentally tough in sports at the highest level (harsh truth, no escaping the fact). This trait is somewhat hidden in some sports, comes to forefront in others.

Moving forward we have two options:

1. Invest heavily in mental conditioning right from junior levels, no use starting this process with a 27 yo first time Olympian. Mental coaches should be as important as technique, fitness, strength & conditioning coaches at all age groups, all levels whether it is international or district. Set up a culture of high mental strength across the board (should be basic pre-requisite for selection and this is where mental coaches will play a major role). Mind over matter as the Germans preach and practice, ability to keep a strong nervous system like East Asians. This will help us overachieve or at least not underachieve when stakes are high.

2. Invest more in Category A sports, less in Cat B. I don't see why we can't win more medals in weightlifting and wrestling. Remember the name 'Jeremy Lalrinnunga', a kid from Mizoram, Youth Olympics gold medalist in weightlifting and a bright prospect for Paris 2024 IMO. Instead of spending so much on shooting contingent, target kids like Jeremy and back them to do bulk of winning in future Olympics. 14 events in the sport, don't see why we can't have 4-5 elite lifters in future games. Look at how Chinese (as an extension E and SE Asians) and Central Asians/Turks dominate lifting, certainly not beyond us Indians. Same with wrestling, looking at how casually we treat this sport and its practitioners (compared to USA, Japan, Russia, Iran, Georgia, Sweden...not going into specifics right now, will save that for maybe when the wrestling events start) it is nothing short of a miracle how we punch above our weight in this highly competitive sport. Mind-blowing ROI.

Cat B has outperformed A in 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020(till now)...shooting and archery are only good for building hype, raising hopes in the buildup to Olympics...khayali pulao. Sure they help us a lot in CWG, Asian Games but must we settle for low grade competition or the Olympics?

PS (I): Didn't include badminton, hockey since they don't drain our resources that much, have given us medals and/or on a positive trend. Badminton is self-sustainable, hockey will get there very soon I fervently wish.

PS (II): Track, rowing, TT, swimming, gymnastics, diving etc. we are a long long way away from becoming world class (aka Olympic deep runs), just hope we keep bettering our shows in CWG, AG....mainly target must be to improve upon national records/benchmarks for the next 20 years, on a regular basis without losing hope/interest if things don't go our way in international meets. Progress will be slow and we must make our peace with it. First breach the critical mark where we have enough quality athletes in these sports, after that worry about international field. Don't splash money since these sports are not high priority, but continue funding, slow and steady.

There is potential in field events and can join Cat A in the near future. We have an excellent javelin program and budding talent among both men and women. We can have 2 Indians in this edition's javelin final, Neeraj has an outside shot at a podium finish as well. Will wait and see how the immediate future unfolds, but I see lots of potential in multiple field events.

Puts cold water on this post, at least partially. Looked like Amit mentally froze after R1. So it is possible to choke in the first category, even for world number one.

tbf Atanu etc relatively did as well as our cricket team has recently and they make and get  half the hype. Dhoni did zilch in his last few years and people tweet about him every other day and neither was his gameplay exciting to watch.

No one forced you to watch. Tell me what funding they provided for indian athletes?

Do we have indian institute of sports for athletes?

Do we offer incentives  ?

Do we have infrastructure for other sports?

Only sport we choked was rifle shooting.
