We won’t have any competitors left in the Games to get the “3-4” golds..

More than grass->astroturf, the removal of offside rule has hurt Indian hockey. This is why I get annoyed when BCCI is so soft on ECB, CA. In hockey where we have little clout in the governing body these goras do everything possible to make things difficult for us.

Bhai we can't take CWG results seriously.....with Aus, Eng, NZ, Can, RSA sending their 2nd and 3rd string athletes. They take WCships more seriously than CWG, even regular season. CWG is glorified exhibition taken seriously only by countries which have accomplished very little on the big stage. We must use CWG only for juniors to gain exposure, not for seniors to stat pad. And FGS stop doling out national honours like candy to CWG winners, bar is set too low that way.

Asian Games sees better competition but even there the heavyweights send their best sportspersons only in a few disciplines (like badminton). Still we don't do that well in Asian Games.

Olympics is a different ball game....if Commonwealth countries don't get you the East Asians, Iranians, Central Asians will. If they too don't get you, the best of Europe, South America, Turkey, Russia, USA etc. will. No respite.

Applies to all sports, including shooting.

Most of the pressure at that level is internalized. External pressure, crowd pressure play a smaller part.

I bow down to your extensive knowledge

:) they are soft on ECB and CA because sponsors pay much more to see starc versus rohit and archer versus kohli than chamira karunaratne against Manish Pandey with russel arnolds commentary..

If we just finish with 1 silver, that tok secured on the 1st day of competition. Then we are regressing even further every time. We'd have done even worse than 2016, which in turn was worse than 2012.

If India has to be a superpower, or even a developed country, than it's sporting culture and achievements have to take off even further.

At the moment we are much worse than other developing countries. Only our fellow subcontinent neighbours are as worse as us.

Honestly till the wrestling starts our best bet appears to be mary kom. She needs to win 2 matches...easier said than done.

@Gollum  any other boxing prospects?

The shooters seem to be choking left right centre.

Manika Batra will face world no 14 and then if she wins it world no 9.

Satwik Chirag will face world no 1 but still can qualify as they beat world no 3.

Saina Ankita lost after being ahead 6-0 5-3.

Sad that our World No 1 s in shooting are not even qualitying for finals.

I would much rather our leaders care about the citizens than playing sports. I don't have any illusions of India becoming a superpower. In order to become a superpower, you have to invade into or steal from other countries which I find abhorrent just as much as I find British and now American supapowas abhorrent. The idea of developed country is a misnomer in India. India can be an agricultural superpower. Yet we have concrete in cities which we call as "development". If any city dweller looks at a vacant spot, he dreams of constructing a building there. That is not development. Sports should be the last priority.

If we look at it statistically 2012 was an outlier for us. Winning 0-2 total medals is the norm.

Remembering 2012 the indian diaspora in london was epic in supporting indian athletes. It was a virutal home venue for india.

Many were sending home cooked food to our athletes. They were never made to feel like foreigners.

Rio and Tokyo no such support. In olympics the home nation does punch above their weight.

Amit Panghal is the best bet in boxing. Not so sure about Mary Kom, she has declined considerably, only thing never count her out.

Hope for the best in mixed shooting events, especially Bhaker-Chaudhary. The experienced Rahi Sarnobat too can come up with something special.
