Good chance for Pooja. She just needs to win two matches to win bronze ala Mary Kom. Exactly like Lovelina. Direct round of 16 entry. 16– 8– 4 ( medal Guaranteed). The only sport where you get guaranteed medal if you reach semi final to ensure its fair to everyone..

Dunno man, I prefer bronze medal match.

Wrestling too has 2 bronze medals per event. Remember Sakshi Mailk and a Tunisian lady winning it in 2016, the Tunisian woman also came to India to participate in Pro Wrestling League.

How Sakshi Malik lived more than a single dream at 2016 Olympics

Maybe a few other sports have 2 bronze medals as well. But doubt India has a chance in those events. Only boxing and wrestling for us.

yes Wrestling has repechage round. So if you get beaten in Round 1 and that round 1 guy reaches final you enter repechage round. So you go through the whole channel. You have to fight all who the finalist has beaten to reach the final. So there are two finalists and so two bronze medals. Yogeshwar dutt and sakshi malik both won through repechage round..even sushil kumar his first bronze medal in 2008.

Personally love the repechage system.

Yes its fair. It might be that you are unlucky and you face the best wrestler who beat you and everyone to pulp and reach finals and thump the other finalist as well. So you still grt a second chance to mitigate the luck of draw

Japan no 1 now. Making full use of home advantage.

Last time, home country finished 13th, around 10 places higher than their normal standings in Olympics.

Japan usually places around 8-12th in Olympic standings. This time I expect them to be in top 3. Anything less than top 5 is a failure for them.

Imagine how much "mental health" strain Sachin must have had before the WC match vs Pakistan

These modern athletes are weak

All sportspersons face mental strain, you think Bhaichung Bhutia had less pressure than Zidane? Everyone has a cross to carry, even if targets aren't the same.

Tougher in individual sports since you don't have any mate to share the mental burden with, and you must get the job done yourself instead of relying on others. All alone once out there in the arena/room.

She really didn't deserve to light the opening ceremony. Nishikori should've done it, though he achieved nowhere near as much as her. Still a better character, and more consistent than her mentally. She is mentally weak.

The only premier athelete i have seen who never faced mental strain and infact used to give mental strain to others ( opponent bowlers, team mates and we audience) was one mr virender sehwag..

This modern athlete has won multiple golds at Olympics. Dont know how anyone can call them mentally weak, slogging away everyday to reach the top.

The pressure they must be putting themselves under would be enormous. Sometimes it might be too much for them to carry on.

Why these tennis players? I am sure there are plenty of great Olympians in Japan, retired legends, gold medalist judokas/wrestlers etc. Tennis gets its fair share of attention/gIamour, why deny spotlight to other disciplines? IMO Olympics should first honour achievements in the games. If not that, at least some national icon....Osaka/Nishikori don't fit the bill...heck they have done zilch in Olympics, both skipped the 2018 Asian Games, clearly put $$ above national prestige.

If India were to host the Olympics,  I'd want an Abhinav Bindra or PT Usha to get the honour, not some other person just cos he/she is more famous globally.

I'm talking in terms of a tennis player. Since Osaka was a tennis player, in place of her , Nishikori would've been a better choice. Of course Japan has an abundance of great athletes across various disciplines. That is evident from their past performances across various events, as well as their temporary standing at the first place in the Olympic table currently.

But, a tennis player has never lighted the opening ceremony before in any Olympic event. It would be nice for tennis popularity and a nice feeling for tennis fans.

She currently is the most popular Japanese athlete in terms of popularity and has very good achievements at such an early stage in her career. It's just that she's mentally weak and fragile. She also spends more time engaging in various off-court activitis than on the court. Unlike Nishikori, who's a hard worker and has made the maximum out of his career. He is also responsible for the increase in popularity for tennis in Japan and is the most marketable athlete, he earns the most in endorsements for a Japanese athlete, and as a tennis player, apart from Federer.  Japan never had a tennis star before him, while they always had star performers in various other sports.

Kaori Icho has won 4 Olympic golds (2004-16), only wrestler to do so. Almost impossible feat since wrestlers don't have that kind of longevity. It is the toughest sport known to humankind, and also an ancient sport finding mention in every culture, original (modern) Olympics sport from 1896 Athens....even finds mention in ancient Olympic Games 2500 years ago.

Imagine sidelining her to pamper a prima donna like Osaka.

Why should that be a negative for a champion athlete, that too a multiple Grand Slam Singles titles winner? If a mentally weak person can reach such highs, then that's an asset that should be celebrated more.

A Black Japanese, an ethnic minority,  among the most successful athletes from the host nation - she thoroughly deserved the honor, her 3rd round exit doesn't matter in the larger context
