Similarities and differences between US Basketball team team at Olympics and India's cricket team

Anyone following basketball - the US basketball Olympics squad was NOT their best - Olympics is not their priority - yet they were expected to hammer the competition and win like they do all the time and win they did. You just know they are too strong.....

I never get this feeling about our cricket team - despite all the depth we have etc..you know that the winning chances ( GOLD ) would be about 30 % realistically speaking - and this has nothing to do with rat. Even if we had Rohit has captain.

Does this mean that we are not as ahead of the other teams like we'd like to think ?

Been lurking for years but this thread was so silly that I had to make an account...

Indian Cricket team is not even on the same planet when it comes to being dominant as US Basketball. The team sent to Olympics was a 3rd tier team (if that). Additionally, you could clearly tell that, the players were playing at maybe their 30-50% trying very hard to not get injured at all cost. If team US in fact, sent their top tier team and they played at their skill level, every game would be a blow out. France was able to hang around in the final with one average NBA player and a couple of below average NBA players.

Indian Cricket Team struggles to close out important tournaments. The last time anyone was clearly dominant in Cricket, it was Australia.

Forget the margin,we are ahead of other teams?

England are clearly better in LOIs and NZ are at worst equal to us

^ And it begs the question about our so called depth of talent, resources etc etc ( which are undoubtedly very strong )

Why is it that we cannot UTTERLY dominate a sport as a predominantly 1 sport country with unparalleled resources - man & money ? And vast number of first class cricketers ?

Our 3rd  team should be able to hammer any team in sight, yet our 1st team struggles to maintain a no.1 rank or close out on important tournaments.

I think we have a lot to learn from the NBA system. How to peak at the right time, strategic, tactics and everything that goes into game preparation.

We haven't produced a single atg fast bowler in 80 years, how are you comparing us to US?

They are way more genetically gifted, and have produced legendary players.

We aren't even amongst the top 3 in terms of producing atg talents.

Please don't expect us to rule Cricket just bcoz of population, we aren't genetically gifted.

Indian Cricket embraces mediocrity as long as they're making money. Have you seen the fitness levels? Quantity does not equal to quality. Also, India has money but not amenities at ground level. You have to be kidding yourself if you think that Indian populous at large has access to same facilities/resources/amenities as those in Australia, England and NZ.

Both men's and women's field hockey teams looked much fitter at Olympics than the Indian Cricket team has looked in a while. I think we had good fitness levels for one or two years when a lot of youngsters were coming through earlier in the last decade.

You are right about the genetically gifted part - but then it applies mostly to African Americans who dominate NBA and form 95 % of the legendary players.

And thats true for every highly physical sport - forever super heavy weight boxing has been dominated by them.

Forever sprinting has been dominated by then.

We talk about legendary West Indian fast bowlers -- heck a small island like Jamaica produces better sprinters then continents combined.

No, we aren't.

Lets not excuse lack of fitness for genetics. Cricket is in fact, one sport where technique is way more important that genetics. "Stronger" in Cricket helps but its not end all be all.

US did not hammer every team Aus game first half was super close. But yeah apart of Kevin durant everyone else were new folks still won. India does not dominate any sport like that not even cricket or kabbadi.

We don't have that kind of talent yet. Now we have started to produce cricketers who come in and start making impact immediately. We have improved in that aspect from 90s and 2000s. It will take a decade more to get high class talent who can utterly dominate the game.

Dude, US was just toying with them. In Q3, they scored 32 points to Australia's 10. When they make up their mind and get into an offensive mode, they are unstoppable.

Yes they go better as the match progressed but it was far closer than I thought it would be.

Don't even compare. NBA level is different. These guys, even the worst of them all or any rookie in NBA is most times better player and can walk into any national team of any of these countries which were playing against U.S in the Olympics.

NBA level is the summit. If you make it there, you are darn good.
