CA to cancel Afghanistan Test over Taliban stance on women

The planned historic maiden men's Test between Australia and Afghanistan appears almost certain to be cancelled after the newly installed Taliban government announced its opposition to women playing cricket in the Islamic nation.

In a statement released today, Cricket Australia confirmed it would be unable to proceed with the planned Test at Hobart's Blundstone Arena from November 27 if news reports of Taliban views on the women's game were true.

"Driving the growth of women’s cricket globally is incredibly important to Cricket Australia," the statement said.

"Our vision for cricket is that it is a sport for all and we support the game unequivocally for women at every level.

"If recent media reports that women’s cricket will not be supported in Afghanistan are substantiated, Cricket Australia would have no alternative but to not host Afghanistan for the proposed Test Match due to be played in Hobart.

"We thank the Australian and Tasmanian Governments for their support on this important issue."

Spokesman for the Taliban government's cultural commission, Ahmadullah Wasiq, had told Australian broadcaster SBS News that cricket was not permitted for women under Islamic law.

"Islam and the Islamic Emirate do not allow women to play cricket or play the kind of sports where they get exposed," Wasiq said.

"In cricket, they might face a situation where their face and body will not be covered. Islam does not allow women to be seen like this.

"It is the media era, and there will be photos and videos, and then people watch it."

Not true apparently. They played from 2010 - 2014 winning the only tournament they played in. In 2020, they were rebuilding the team and had awarded a central contract to 25 players and were given full recognition as a test and ODI team in Apr 2021.

No sir, they have not played International cricket EVER. A tournament in Tajikistan isn't really 'international cricket'

They were representing their country and playing against other countries. Sounds like international cricket to me. Was it an official tournament, as in, ICC sanctioned? No. 

 

They were only given ICC status in April this year - so official match - no. International yes.

As far as I know, there are 2 Talibans. Or factions. 

 

The one in Afghanistan is supported by Pakistan.

The one in Pakistan hates Pakistan.

 

They are war against one Taliban (TTP) while supporting the other one.

Same evil ideology. There is nothing like Good Taliban, Bad Taliban. Pakistanis would like the world to believe TTP is backed by Mossad/CIA/RAW and that there are TTP safe houses in Afg. This decade will bust many myths created by Pakistanis. Afghan Taliban and TTP will be in sync, wait and watch.

Very good decision by CA. Evey world body should do the same. Few Terrorist can not rule a country in 21st century and assume its BAU as usual. Taliban is here because people wanted it. I doubt the players are any different. I wish Pakistan should be treated same for their country is responsible for creating this situation in Afghanistan.
