India vs NZ 1st T20: Playing XI

So yet another ( meaningless ) T20 BILATERAL series will kick in in 2 days time.

India's road to WT20 2022 begins now under new leadership of Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma.

Don't think we can see a true out of the box approach approach but what we can expect from the new squad.

- A first glance at the squad reveals there are no middle orders bats apart from maybe Sreyas Iyer and Rishab Pant.

-There are six players who bat 1-2-3 for their IPL teams.
- There are no genuine allrounders - Axar/Ashwin are bowlers who can bat while Venkatesh Iyer is unproven.
- No clarity as yet on who is no. 1 T20 keeper in India- Pant or Kishan
- Yuzi Chahal is back and he is locked in.
- Bhuvi and Deepak Chahr are similar bowlers and only one of them should play.
- Two of Siraj, Avesh and Harshal Patel ( who can also bat) must be picked.

My Playing XI

Venkatesh Iyer
Rohit
Sky
Shreyas Iyer
Rahul
Pant ( wk)

Axar
Harshal
Deepak Chahar

Yuzi
Siraj

Reserves:
Gaikwad
Kishan
Ashwin
Bhuvi

Avesh

Rahul

Rohit (unfortunately)

Pant

Iyer

Venky Iyer (Test him in MO)

SKY (finisher 360 Matt Wade type player)

Axar

D Chahar

Ashwin

Siraj

Avesh

That's the best XI in my view.

Rotate Ruturaj with Rohit if possible..

The hype around harshal will end very quickly, bits and peaces bowler, what's his stock ball? Hard length cutter? He will be dispatched in t20i, Siraj is in terrific form, energy, runup, quick arm action, braced front leg, seam positioning he has it all, currently second only to bumrah with his yorkers, just hope he doesn't over do it banging the ball in short, can get pulled around as he ain't very tall, needs to get the bouncer high around mid rift area. Am not to sure about avesh tbh, bit of a mix bag at times he looks a proper fast bowler and on occasions a trundler, fitness wise their is a lot of scope for improvement.

Would have loved seeing prasidh, tyagi or mavi picked on potential atleast for this format, just hope sense prevails soon, the only medium In the squad should be natarajan imo.

There is huge amount of respect for Harshal Patel among Indian fans about what he achieved in IPl with his cutters & economy rate.

There is huge disrespect for guys like Tyagi Prasidh Avesh coz they got tonked in a useless IPl game where even Cummins Hazelwood were also thrashed & even no one raised the question about why Siraj wasn't picked despite performing in IPl & test cricket.

Trundlers are always respected in India..  And some fans had the nerve to question on what basis Umran Malik was selected for A tour as he has zero domestic experience over guys like Warrier & other domestic bullies.

This is the kind of knowledgeable fans India has.

Absolutely correct. Nattu will be awesome in australia next year. He has serious potential there. There was a time where he hit 140 but you mentioned he chucked at the time. Even with the altered action he can perform pretty well.

Nattu siraj and bumrah is good.

And bhai are we just goign going forget umran bhai now? Cmon? You serious.

If our chewtiya management ignore umran tyagi siraj etc and opt for trundlers I swear I will legit quit watching LOI cricket. I am at the end of my tether with this management. I watch cricket for fast bowlers. Not trundlers. I pay money to watch either fast bowlers or fast medium who have brilliant skills like bouncers and yorkers.

Nothing against seam bowlers but if I have to like a player like philander or say boult, I would need to see them execute a decent yorker atleast cause I know they lack the pace for a nasty bumper.

The higher your pace and accuracy the higher your margin for error.

It's like a huge mma fighter weighing 240 plus vs a guy who is say 160 lbs. Sure the 160 lb guy can KO the big guy but his margin for error is thin. If the 240 plus beast grabs hold of him, he is toast.

Worst is the commentators like bhogle, sunny and manjrekar go gaga over harshal Patel's and chahars, I mean these guys have been part of the team in the past and have commentated for over 20 years they would have seen truck loads of these trundlers playing for India and failing time again, by now I would have they would have had some understanding of what the team requires in terms of pace bowling, unadkat was played in t20s due to one decent ipl season, he got tonked around in the nidahas trophy, same with sreenath Arvind who got hammered in the lone t20 he played against SA, someone like Hassan Ali who ain't exactly a trundler but still gets thrashed around for fun, harshal ain't tall neither his action is deceptive like mustafizur. All from chahar, bhuvi, harshal and Siraj are about the same height

100% agreed.  Our commies & ex players have zero understanding of modern game.

People like Hayden are absolutely correct when he called that Indian players are used to facing 130kph bowlers in IPl coz when he shares the room with Sunny G Bhogle Kartik in commentary box...  They praise guys like Sakariya Harshal Patel Unadkat Chahar & Bhuvi to no end.   That's what the general mindset of people here in India as well.

Siraj Tyagi Avesh Praisdh have been treated unfairly for most part of last year or so.

Saini was wasted just like that as well.

Most Indian fans would have been hurt by what Hayden said but he was correct all along, australia also tried out these so called slower ball specialists like Sams, Boland, tye etc but all failed, they to have treated Billy stanlake, pattinson pretty badly.

What is scary is that guys like Laxman, who's views we know, who hype up bhuvi over faster bowlers, are now going to be in charge of our youngstes

With kohli losing power, there is every chance that fast bowling culture is going to he shelved and from U19 itself we will see line and length bowlers encouraged

Even for umar malik, it was only kohli who insisted on him as a net bowler, no one else spoke about him. With kohli gone, no one would care

I hope i am wrong, but all the progress we made recently might be gone. For eg, someone like umesh would never have been supported by someone like laxman after couple of failures

Agree with a lot here.

But 2 points

1. Siraj is around 6'0" and hence medium height for a pacer ... which is good enough to bowl bouncers if someone is sharp or fast.

2. Natarajan's ceiling is low too. Since we will invariably play a medium paced bowling allrounder at 8 ... it means Bumrah will be the only fast bowler if Natarajan plays.

A pace bowling line-up of

1. Bumrah

2. Natarajan

3. Shardul / Bhuvi / D.Chahar / Harshal

looks weak and slow barring Bumrah.

Khaleel from what I have observed is very useful bowler with new ball.  Still is in my opinion best left arm pace bowler in the country. He has good pace & zip in his bowling.   Yes he has struggles in the death but can be worked upon.  Sad to see a talent like him is discarded so soon.

Apart from Isan kishan i am skeptical about others. Kishan is designed for T20. He may fail 2 out of 3 times. But that is the risk we should take. But when he comes off he can completely shut down the opposition. He needs a longer rope.  KL Rahul is a mental midget. Otherwise he is one of the best T20 player in the world. But we don't have middle/lower order uit who often times add those extra 20 to 30 runs on a consistent basis. Pant is good up the order. But down the order he tries to overhit and as a result he is inconsistent. Then he overcompensates by piling up dot balls in the next match.  A reason why he has a low T20I strike rate.  For some weird reason he didn't promote himself in the IPL.  May be no.3 or no.4.   5/6/7 I don't see any long term options yet.

In hindsight would like to have a fit natarajan in the squad atleast ahead of bhuvi and harshal, just hope we get to see a t20 attack of bumrah, Siraj and prasidh/tyagi, with nattu and avesh as back ups, with Siraj it's all energy but on placid surfaces hitting the deck could just sit up there to be hit, siraj using the crease wide attacking the stumps on Indian pitches would be the way forward.
