See coach's role ends once match starts. With all the injury to pacers and Iyer/Rahul/Pant/Sundar. There weren't many options to choose anyway.

 

Yes Ashwin could have played but many posters agreed with the decision to not play him on eve of the Test. We can criticise mid match but they can't change team mid match.

But him and sharma had better understanding of this pitch and typically how pitch will behaves over a period of time in 5 days. Being coach and captain they end up selecting wrong players over a period of time now. Enough of defending of these 2 both should be thrown out.
