Jaddu has not regressed as a bowler, he is always used as defensive option, but he does a very good job by taking wickets due to his speed variations.  SA is test for Ashwin to prove he is equally potent in non-spinner friendly condition.

It will be a hard work. Expecting him to run through sides on bouncy, seaming wickets is ridiculous. No spinner does that everywhere except may be Warne. Even he struggled big time in India. Murali strauggled in Australia. Finished with an appalling average. This is despite the fact they are sure starters in the playing XI. Ashwin missed 50% of the SENA matches since he made his debut. In Any other team he would have played every single match. Only a one-dimensional team like India omit him in the name of balance.

Laughable comparison of Ashwin and Murali. Murali was a match winner for SL everywhere except Australia. Took a 5-er on his first tours to NZ, SA and England. His 16 wickets at Oval is something Ashwin can only dream of. Struggled in Australia, more because of the hostility he faced from the umpires and is also an aberration in his record. Picked up 10 5-ers and 5 10-fers in 23 SENA tests. Same for Warne's record in Asia, 11 5-ers and 3 10-fers, was a match winner in SL, Pakistan and UAE, struggled in India.

Ashwin OTOH has played 21 SENA tests and is yet to pick even a 5-er. Justifiably he hasn't been picked for SENA tests regularly. Forget Warne and Murali, he has a worse record in SENA than even Jadeja (who has at least a 5-er in SA), whom you've been mocking persistently in recent weeks.

Best ever fast bowling era of all time. What a time to be alive.

Some of these names are not worthy of a mention

What have Archer, Wood, Naseem, Faheem done. From test cricket's perspective, Holder is better than all these. Actually, all Windies fast bowlers are good- Roach, Gabriel, Holder. Even Alzarri Joseph and Chemar Holder have potential.

I think Ashwin upto 2016 was not too great at all on unhelpful conditions.  He modified himself later on.  He himself has admitted he watched a lot of Nathan Lyon.

Remember him bowling leg stump trash in Wanderers in 2014 on day 5. There was help on offer but he failed brutally.  He himself has admitted it was low point of his career.

He reinvented himself bowling on better pitches at home setting up batters & staying patient.  Fitness issues are there & occasional brainfades like Rose bowl 2018 led to Jaddu being premier spinner in overseas.  His batting had declined too.  He hopefully gets his redemption circle complete on this SA tour.  A lot of catches were dropped off him in Centurion test last time.  So he can be trump card there on Boxing day.

No but hardik can run through sides easily. Hardik already has 5fers in England and s.africa.

India spinners can only do well in Asia. Ashwin averaged 38 outside India In sena.

Warne averages 45 in India but he is an ATG. But Indian spinners are one trick ponies.

On non helpful wickets they can't pick up wickets because we drew one game vs Kiwis.

it's OK to doctor pitches to suit bounce but not ok to doctor pitches to aid spin. Cognitive bias is strong in this one. You know who.

Ashwin could have had 3-4 five wicket hauls in sena if not for drop catches and missed chances, was India's best bowler in the wtc final in Southampton. His numbers are fine overseas, needs a good series in this time around SA

Leach was smashed in first Chennai test where bess took the 5fer. Still came back very well in the series. Today there's just zero pressure on Aussie batsmen, if their batsmen can get some decent runs, England bowling will look better

he actually bowled alright i thought, on another day would have returned normal figures. One batsman redlining and having it come off is the reason for these figures.

In one test this happened in SA. You should see how they bowl in unhelpful conditions. You cannot club Ashwin with run of the mill floaters with no variations.

Dude you have to look at strike rate. Jaddu picked a fifer giving over 100 runs. in one innings. You sound like he was running through the sides. NExt Warne/Murali were going to play in the countries they failed at regardless of their past record. Warne was always no.1 choice in India. Murali was always no.1 choice in Australia. That luxury was something Ashwin never enjoyed. He was used as defensive options on and off. He missed several tests. Never had a full series. Dropped for this test. What is with fifer. He picked a 4fer only recent in Australia. In the WTC final he was the one had to provide breakthrough in seamer friendly conditions.  He missed 4 tests in a row despite being the lead wicket taker in WTC.  Warne/Murali bullied teams that were susceptible to spin. Back then for Australia it was Mcgrath and Warne. Occasionally other seamers would step up. Not the same case now for India. For SL Murali was the sole option.  Ashwin was primarily used to hold one end up. Dhoni made sure fields were defensive on one side. From a skill perspective Ashwin is as good as anyone.  You don't pick him for 1 test and sit him out for 2 tests.

Hardik run through sides? Bit like how Agarkar/Dean headley/Mullally run through sides? All these 2nd grade seamers had their time out in helpful conditions. This is not different from Afridi bullying us with ball on day 5 pitch.

By the  SL has not won any test in India, let alone Murali being the match winner. Sehwag massacred him at the Wankhede. Murali's average is 45 in India.

btw dont forget warne has better fielders aroun him. we have useless fielders barring 3 or 4. Factor that in too. Ash would have had more scalps. pacers too. marnus and smith were dropped off bumrah several times in BG series when they were well below 30 odd

With so many people who do not deep dive and see why this is the case i missed that.  He only recently dismissed Steve Smith 3 times in Australia. 0, 1, 81. None of them are fluke wickets like batsmen trying to attack you and get holed out. He beat him in flight. Not only that even during the shrot stay Steve smtih was distinctly uncofmortable against Ashwin because of the carrom ball.

u get smith, you must be an ATG level bowler tbh.  sure yasir gets him out but that happens when smith has piled on runs already. meaningles wickets. ash takes match defining wickets of smith

Anyway let us not hijack this thread. This is match thread. Let us stick to the match. Writing is on the wall for England. There is no coming from this position. Australia will go all out attack even with slightly better batsman friendly condition.
