So when you're saying take 5 years record into account why the * would Ashwin's numbers in those 2 vital series not matter? Ashwin averaged 32 in England 2018 and 30 in SA. Thats not bad . My point is Moeen or Maharaj being better doesnt give complete picture as it depends on various other factors too, specially them being used to the conditions way more. Vijy 1

I obviously didn't include Oz because he has done really well on those two tours. In SA our fielders dropped sitters for sure, but again it's the results that matter - he was comprehensively outbowled by Bhai in Eng or do you want to bring other excuses in there?
Lord Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 I'd have given it to Pant. He's clearly the only one at the point that can lead the team in all formats after 2023 putrevus 1

We all followed the match. If Bhai had done the same to all the opposition in England we would know. Let us look Bhai at home against other teams. Bhai averages 47.86 vs australia Bhai averages 50 vs New zealand Bhai averages 46.54 vs South Africa Bhai averages 72.20 vs Srilanka Bhai averages 49.60 vs West indies Only two teams he has done well against in England are SA and India vs India 26 vs NZ 15 Murali/Warne/Herath have been outbowled by many spinners. That doesn't mean much.
vvvslaxman Posted December 19, 2021 Author Posted December 19, 2021 Don't lose sight of the fact INdia is one of the most pathetic team against spin in this argument. Root, Okeefe, Lyon, Ali, Ajaz patel even Leach in one match have troubled us. In the world T20 we were pathetic against Santner/Sodhi/Shadab/Imad. Vijy and SRT100 1 1

He probably will follow a template. In Tests you can course correct if you make mistakes. But still not feeling super confident in case if he gets to captain the series. Hope he surprises us. Besides KL Rahul has just staged a comeback after 2019. Got an average of 39.37 in England. Played a critical role. But this is still his first series after come back. He has done this before. averaged 65 and 71 in a couple of series. Then 28, 7, 29, 18, 11, 25 if you exclude afghanistan test. in the next 6 series. Now back again with average of 39. We just have to wait and see how long he will sustain this form. We are not sure how he will react to additional responsibility. 7 years career 40 tests average 35.16 and 6 centuries. Way too inconsistent. Even in his most recently successful series he made 84,26, 129 in the first 3 innings. Then 5, 0, 8, 17 before a 46 at the oval. Lord 1
dilliboy Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 Well * me if he does become our next captain , then he would be our most uninspiring captain ever vvvslaxman 1

Lovely bit of bowling by Ashwin but he's not going to get the reward for that. It's the loop and drift that does it again, Pucovski is drawn forward, but the ball dips and doesn't turn, takes a thin edge as he pushes with hands going away from pad. Pant unable to hold on Jadeja bowled like 7 or 8 overs in the first 70 overs. He was hardly used as he was not that effective on view. His eventual numbers don't tell the whole story. Same at the MCG where Ashwin wsa the one who triggered the collapse reducing them to 38/3. This is why you have to watch the match. Blindly not throwing numbers. LOL as if only you watch the matches. On every single stat away from home wether career/5 year/last time they played together, Jadeja has better numbers. You only have catches dropped as your argument. Try better. I am not even a Jadeja fan and like Ashwin but when you repeatedly try to distort facts, it needs a proper rebuttal.
Norman Posted December 19, 2021 Posted December 19, 2021 It's clear that KL is groomed for an all format captaincy role post 2023. Unless he improves drastically as a leader and a tactician, some more painful ICC tournament exits await us..

Atleast Rahul made some runs overseas in between. Rohit went completely AWOL in overseas tours for the best part of his career. One half decent year (did not average 50 either) he is the VC. You would think someone like Ashwin who has been a big match winner/match saver in Tests for so long should have been handed over vice captaincy. In 2021 Ashwin batting average 29.08 Bowling average 16.23 Rahane batting average 19.57 KL Rahul 39.37 Rohit 47.68 You cant be made VC when our idiot captain refuses to play him. vvvslaxman 1

He has one half decent series since his return. 2 good scores followed by 3 average scores. I sincerely hope he has turned a corner. With KL Rahul disappointment is always around the corner. He was the only one in screaming form at the end of IPL. But failed in 2 important matches. Vijy 1

I do like the choice unfortunately Kohli's ego wont allow it. Do you really believe he would afford the same number of chances of failing at test level like Rahane? Kohli is more likely to drop Gill than to take up any of his suggestions as VC. I think it would be an inspired choice. Austin 3:!6 1

Either big scores or single digits. He has the potential. He reminds me of Carl Hooper who was immensely talented but always would play a soft shot and get out.

sensible-indian Posted December 20, 2021 Posted December 20, 2021 (edited) Same logic can be used against Ashwin before Adelaide 2018. He averaged 50 in Aus before that. Why should he be picked? The reason is there are factors outside raw stats.... Just like how Rohit is currently one of our best if not the best test bat on form. Edited December 20, 2021 by sensible-indian
