vvvslaxman
Shreyas Iyer needs an extended run. WE have to stop jumping up and down after each failure. He has played some clutch knocks after top order collapses. Overall he is reasonably consistent for a middle order. 8 century partnerships in 21 innings. He can target a weak bowler and smash pick some 20 to 25 runs in one over. He can be like Rohit sharma in that regard. Big over guy. Venky Iyer should also be backed. Even as an opener for KKR he showed respect to good balls. Didn't go after the ball blindly. He is temperamentally good. Shbuman Gill the star of under-19 world cup is unable to find a spot in this line up. He should always be in the reckoning. Sharukh type of player must be included. They are game changers. rollingstoned and nevada 2 Link to comment

Shreyas Iyer is good but there's no place for him in our side. Dhawan/Ruturaj Sharma Kohli Pant Rahul Pandya /Venky (basically an all rounder) Now where do you think he"ll bat when Sharma returns? Kl Rahul is definitely a better batsman and has outperformed him at no. 5. There's no way Iyer comes in for Pant. Link to comment

In 2 years time the same old team means we will be in deeper ****. Bunch of 35 plus year Olds at the top. Adamant 1 Link to comment

Weren't these guys third openers at some point too or is it some sort of musical chairs? Link to comment
Majestic
The Indian team management is not bothered of developing third opener. They are just playing musical chairs with them. Next IPL season, Paddikal will score 700 runs and then they will pick Paddikal in the squad too and drop Shaw, Kishan, Gill, Mayank and Ruturaj etc from the squad. Adamant
Performance of middle order bats : Rishabh Pant 85(71) - standout performance of the innings. S Iyer - 11(14) another failure away from home conditions. V iyer - just the second innings so not judging but he scored 22(33) Everyone and their dog knows that Pant is the best Indian player currently operating and he is definitely gonna be in their for the next 10 years. Now coming to S Iyer- most people here agree that he is good mostly on flat asian tracks, and that was further clarified today. V Iyer is new and there's no reason to judge him so early but what I have noticed from his performance in IPL and even three four international innings is that he is not gonna solve our problem. We need to realise that IPL and international cricket are two completely different things, if we have prodigies like Shaw, Yashasvi, Gill and even some other really great talents like Sundar, Kishan, Samad then why are we not using them instead of short term fixes like the two Iyers. Also we need Hardik Pandya, people who think V Iyer can solve our allrounder problem are delusional, 120 kph in odis with no skills will cost us matches. Collingwood bowled at the same pace as Venky and no one calls him an all rounder. India needs Pandya to find a balance. Vijy 1 Link to comment
dilliboy
Pant averaging 35 now with a strike rate of 113 in ODIs and that after his position being flip flopped throughout his career. Give him a consistent run at no 4 and you'll see his full potential unleashed SRT100, Lord, Frustrated and 1 other 1 3 Link to comment

Give him a consistent run at no 4 and you'll see his full potential unleashed Pant while batting first is different from while batting second. Averaging 16 at a strike rate of 86 while chasing and averaging 50 at a strike rate of 123 while batting first. So there is some scope for improvement in that area. Link to comment
Vijy
Pant is doing well. want to see KLR at 5 and gaekwad at 3. SRT100 1 Link to comment
Frustrated
I know it's little early, but V Iyer does not inspire much confidence, TBH. 22 off 33 on a flat patta, and that too at a time when we were supposed to slog. Also , there were far too many plays and misses. Frequently , looked like he might edge one to the WK. Take out that one SIX off a free hit, there was nothing in his batting. SRT100 1 Link to comment
Adamant
Pant - 0(1) Iyer - 26(34) another failure despite getting a great opportunity Surya 39(32) 65 runs in 67 balls when chasing 287 Yet another failure. Thank You. Link to comment
Adamant
Just drop Shreyas Iyer FGS. Sky should bat at 5. Link to comment
Adamant
The purpose of this thread is to count how many opportunities they got to win the match for us and failed. This thread is solely dedicated to middle order, no need to mention top order performances here, I know that they aren't performing well to but that is a different topic and needs to be discussed separately, just like how our middle order failure didn't stopped our top order from winning matches till 2019, our top order performances shouldn't stop our middle order from winning matches that too after mostly getting manageable targets. Thank You. Link to comment
Vijy
TM needs to use Pant differently when setting target vs chasing. He should probably open when chasing and bat in middle order when setting target. need to be flexible about these kind of things. he seems to have more freedom/clarity in 1st innings. he is still pretty raw in his ODI career, so needs an extended run - 2 failures in the series should not be a pretext to drop him Lord and SRT100 2 Link to comment
Majestic
Not sure why the middle order performances was not tracked this series: ODI 1st - SKY and Hooda played good cameos to finish off the game. ODI 2nd - SKY and Rahul rescued the sinking ship of team India after failure of top order. ODI 3rd - Iyer and Pant rescued the sinking ship of team India after failure of top order. Summary :- In this series, middle order has saved India from embarrassment while top order has been complete failures. Vijy 1 Link to comment
Adamant
1 st odi Chasing 178, lol Surya and Hooda did ok but sorry, nothing to write home about. 2nd Odi Surya 64 (83) Rahul 49 Hooda 29 Above Average performance. 3rd odi Iyer 80(111) Pant 56(54) Sky 6(7) Good performance but if we keep in mind that all these performances were against 10 th ranked Windies then I won't rate any of them as good. Average performances at best. Link to comment

Summary :- In this series, middle order has saved India from embarrassment while top order has been complete failures. The top order is generally going to fail consistently. By that I mean, either we lose 2-3 wickets early and or the SR is poor which is a fail and places too much pressure on the middle order. When is the last time, the top order provided a huge platform for the middle and lower batsmen to launch from??? ie RR of around 6 at the 30th over mark. Vijy 1 Link to comment
Frustrated
5 hours ago, Majestic said: Not sure why the middle order performances was not tracked this series Reasons 1) Opposition is 10th ranked team which lost to Associate (Ireland) last month. 2) It's a home series as well. Familiar conditions. 3) In the 2nd odi, we scored 237 which was below par even on that ground. The bowlers saved us from embarrassment in that game. Yes, MO did a decent job, but bowlers had to bowl exceptionally well to win it. Prasidh was MOTM. Majestic 1 Link to comment
