This thread is mean to specifically track performance of India's middle order in LOIs starting from 2022 January.

The first assignment for our middle order is to chase 145 in 132 balls vs SA.

Both Pant and Iyer have enough experience to know how they have to take it forward to win games.

Yes, I think this is a pretty chaseable target and Iyer, Pant are experienced enough to finish this off.

Chasing 145 in 132 balls against SA

Pant 16(22)

Shreyas Iyer 17(17)

Venky Iyer 2(7)

Failure in the first opportunity they got post 2021, no problem though, they should improve.

Replace Iyer with Kohli. No. 3 is middle order, no.6 is not.

No. 3 is top order bro, there's a reason why top order is a different term.

If we wanted to refer to top two batsman then we can call them openers.

yes, top order is 1-3. middle order is 4-6. lower middle order is 6-8. no. 6 is placed in both categories.

Shreyas Iyer is one guy who would be really useful on typical flat Indian tracks in lois, he can score against anyone on flat Indian tracks but the moment we step out of India or even if the conditions are offering some lateral movement (even in India) he will be a sitting duck.

Now considering the fact that next world cup is in India we can definitely take the of playing him but be assured that if Trent Boult or Shaheen runs through our batting order again, this guy won't do zilch.

SuryaKumar is a better LOI player than Iyer and should easily be selected above Iyer.

He can take on pace bowlers and Spinners and also has a sensible head.

There's some calmness when he bats which I definitely don't see in Iyer.

Let's give them a few games before jumping the gun on their performances

The motive of this thread is to track their performances, no one is judging them based on one match or even one series.

SA was 68/3 in 17.4 overs. They had a batsman making 110 in 143 balls. They still got close to 300 total. Because their lower order batsman was ready to take the responsibility. India was in a much better position.

yes but on few occassions after a 150+ stand by openers nbr 3 becomes a MO

Lower order batsman? Their set batsmen stayed till the end. That's the mantra to bat on pitches like these. Only set batsmen can score quickly on such surfaces. Your top order scored less than 5 RPO here while Chasing 6 RPO.

Pant is a good test player but extremely average in T20s and ODIs. I hope the selectors realize this soon. Kishan is a way better option for limited oversand can easily open/come at 1 down

Rassie bats at no. 5

Bavuma made 110 of 143, if one of our player bats in the exact same fashion then all hell would break loose.

Also, what according to you shuld be the template to chase a 290 score?

Making 152 - 3 in 168 balls is definitely good enough.

If you think that chasing at 6.4 rpo is too much for our middle order than you definitely don't really rate them at all.

Our MO is trash. Still people are hell bent on blaming Top Order. It is not as if the MO was asked to chase at 10 RPO. When Kohli got out it was well within 7 which is very much doable and these guys (Pant-Iyer) have been playing so called best league for 5-6 yrs..Don't have on faith SKY, too. They will have to start taking responsibility and make their name just like Kohli of 2010-2013 did.
