zen
Of the 14 IPLs hitherto, CSK and MI have won 9 (64%). From 2022 onwards, IPL will move in a different direction with the addition of two more teams. The Mega Auction (Thread - Link) promises to change the dynamics to ponder over the question - Will CSK and MI remain dominant in the new IPL? To help us to answer this question (not from a fan's perspective), let's look at where the two teams stand: CSK -> Retained: Dhoni, Jadeja, Moeen, & Gaikwad. MI -> Retained: Rohit, Bumrah, SKY, & Pollard. Many of the core group players are expected to be taken up by other franchises. However, the auction is also an opportunity to start fresh and build upon strengths (a difficult task to reach previous high/level) For these two, the auction budget is limited to 48 cr with both teams retaining 4 players (If you have the opportunity to retain 4 players from your squad, a team would do that. However, the choice of retentions can be questioned). Challenges CSK Should Dhoni have signed up as a mentor (rather than the captain)? MSD of 2022 is a different player. CSK has parked 12 cr on him. With Dhoni, there has been a trend where he leaves a role when people ask "Why not" versus "Why". Dhoni is a lucky player and his luck may have provided him with an opportunity to go out on a high in 2021 where he led CSK to its 4th IPL title. There are two sides of a coin, therefore, the other side may have pushed Dhoni to continue in the wrong direction where his bad luck takes over, making people ask why did he continue (when he could have been perfect as the mentor). CSK needs to rebuild its core, which is easier said than done. MI Needs to rebuild its core. MI is backed by a big business group that has made MI work like a well oiled apparatus. However, since it is building a new team, too many cooks can spoil the broth. Opportunities CSK. Dhoni has done it in the past, and can do it again. MI. A chance to see the merits of its well oiled apparatus. Considering various facets, will CSK and MI remain dominant in the new IPL? Rantzz
Csk is most dominant ipl franchise ever i struggle to see how they keep that up because players they have brought up like Chahar and Thakur and mould them into all rounders will go elsewhere now
zen
How would folks rate the squads of these two?
Lord
looks like they will, specially MI. Booked some trophies with Bumrah-Archer-Mills combo to go with Pollard-David. CSK bought back lot of players but should do well this year. Pace attack looks better
helperononline
Difficult to say anything now CSK did a ok job retaining most of its core player but they are missing a opener. They have Won lot of games due to foreign opener i.e. Hayden ,Hussey , Watson and FaF now they don't have that not sure how the Conway guy will play. As for MI they have got 4 solid proven batters and 2- 3 good bowlers if they have that archer guy playing this year they will be unstoppable. bowl_out
If Conway clicks for CSK they have all bases covered.. I thought they will go for Jason Roy MI had a great second day.. Jofra is an interesting pick.. Will work out great if he is fit in 2023, 24.. If he went unsold this year, he would easily go for 12+ crores in a mini-auction next year.. MI just cut out that possibility.. Even if he doesn't play in '22, they have good backups in Meredith and Mills.. DC and PKBS have formidable sides as well.. Not sure about the rest

All the other sides are decent as well, except for KKR which are average. They managed to go from piss poor to average though, thanks to some last minute buys. bowl_out
dilliboy
Csk's dominance will end once Dhoni leaves.. Bit like Alex Ferguson leaving Manchester Utd. MI will be successful but not as dominant as before.. Do think picking up an injury prone Archer who isn't even going to play this year is a huge gamble. Ankit_sharma03
CSK will never remain same withouut dhoni, if they want to make the team good then build a team with good players not with the kind of players dhoni had (he cud make them work like no other)
Ankit_sharma03
MI will remain solid coz they have such a solid structure in place of identifying players , good leaders n they invest in good fast bowlers. They have already invested in tilak, bodhi, brevis for future and imagine archer n bumrah
