Which one is better?

Wicket keepers: Pant, DK vs Dhoni, DK

Dhoni of 2007 along with captaincy is better than Pant. DK of 2022 is more focused and hungry than DK of 2007. Not much to pick.

Verdict: Tie

Openers/ Top order:  Rohit, Rahul, Virat vs Sehwag, Gambhir,Uthappa

Gambhir is more clutch than all the names in the list. Add to that Sehwag who played T20 in tests. Uthappa might have an inferior record to Rahul but more destructive. However the records of the current  top 3 is indisputable and also they have refined their T20 game over years of IPL but given their tendency to choke…..

Verdict: 2007 squad (solely for mental strength)

Fast bowling attack Bhuvi, Bumrah, Arshdeep, H.Patel vs Sreeshanth, RP, A.Agarkar

Strength in numbers but then again because we had 2 additional seamers who could bat in 2007. Sad that 2007 attack when India didn’t have a huge pool is faster on an average (bar Bumrah) than our 2022 attack. However Bumrah and Bhuvi are proven performers in the format for all their flaws and way more refined.

Verdict: 2022 squad (controversial but not using emotion)

Spinners. :  Axar, Chahal, Ashwin vs Harbhajan, Chawla

Bhajji and Chawala can bat and field while Axar and Ashwin are way too hit and miss and all 3 are poor fielders

Verdict : 2007 squad (Viru can also roll his arm)

Like for like: Hooda vs Yusuf Pathan

any debate ?

Verdict: 2007 squad.

seam bowling allrounders: Hardik Pandya vs Sir Jogi, Irfan

Verdict: strength in numbers: 2007 squad.

Middle order: SKY vs Yuvraj, Rohit (2007 edition)

Verdict : 2007 squad.

overall 2007 squad seems more balanced.

anyway the larger point is these things might be subjective but we haven’t evolved much 15 yrs since IPL.

the takeaway is we need talent scouts. Greg Chappell is the unsung hero of Indian cricket. In fact it is sad that some think of him as the bad guy. BCCI should put a statue of him. Had he not gone against the grain we would have gone with VVS, Dravid and Ganguly in WT20 and there wouldn’t have been an IPL. A smaller statue  of Misbah next to him would be a nice touch :)

I think both sides were poor in fielding but the 2007 side played without fear and had a lot of flexibility.

Sehwag yuvraj Yusuf irfan even Rohit and then Raina...so many bowlers

Gambhi yuvi Raina as bonafide lefties who made to the team on their own merit.

Bhajji zaheer agarkar who could atleast bat.

Had so many bowling options..it is unbelievable.

Only fast bowling was weaker but I think we nullified that with selection to some extent.

Your point about ipl and t20 experience is kind of watered down by the fact that others have also gained this experience.

Yuvraj is the difference between two squads. India was never going to reach finals. That semifinal innings is still the best t20 innings by Indian batsman.

You get that Yuvi in the middle order of 2022 squad, batting would be just fine.

2007 - Don't know the average age of the team..but guessing will be lot lesser than the current lot.

Key difference - 2007 team played fearless cricket and wanted to have glory. But current lot of washed up cricketers are stat padders and happy to settle with good Averages, numbers. New lot have fear of failure and will express only when kicked out of the tournament like last match against Afghanistan.

Unless the mindset changes from BCCI & having gutsy selectors to push for different personals for Test,ODI and T20, we are not going to win anything in multi country tournaments any time soon. We will have good win-loss % losing key games with empty trophy cabinet and army of losers here will argue with numbers and stats this guy/that guy is economical, look at the average blah blah.

On paper/Stats wise 2022 Wt20 team is better, no doubt.
But 2007 team was "in form" and had more allrounders (batters who can bowl, bowlers who can bat).
I think except, GG, RP, MSD, Uthappa and DK all can contribute 2-ways (even Uthappa hit wickets when needed).

Currently with Rohit, Rahul, Virat, SKY, Pant, DK, Bhuvi, Arshdeep, Chahal, Bumrah we have 10 one dimensional players.

We played with nothing to lose mentality in that tournament and Yuvi- Dhoni were at peak. Our young bowlers played with aggressive mentality too.

Gambhir had balls of steel. He didn't play selfishly. Played according to the situation. The match against New zealand was awesome match although we lost. India needed 191 to win.  Gambhir and Sehwag came out guns blazing.  India was 76/0 in 5.4 overs. Think about current pair making those runs in the first 6 overs. That was against Shane Bond.
