No need to celebrate we expected to beat them . We will never beat India, England , Aus, Pak, ...half chance SA and NZ on a good day but the rest we are disappointed if we do get beat from them

WI out in the qualifier so 2nd bad WC in a row for the team.

We don’t have a bowling that can win you tournaments.

 

if you look at 83 and 2011, we had a perfect bowling attack for those conditions.

 

2007 bowling was good but don’t think any team had figured out T20 at that point.

Good Day 1 of the main groups

 

AUS v NZ at SCG

 

Much like in 1992, the Kiwis are off to a flying start. They beat AUS convincingly. Would be interesting to see if the Kiwis can sustain their form and how Aus bounces back. Green can be an option to try for Aus. Highlights of the game was the Convey-Allen opening partnership which allowed NZ to stamp its grip on the game. 

 

 

AFG v ENG at Perth 

 

AFG has one of the best spin oriented bowling attacks in the competition which made ENG scrape through for a win. ENG would not mind it early on in the competition, while AFG would hope to bat better in the upcoming games. Highlight of the game was S Curren's 5-er, a first for ENG.

Day 2 

 

The main game was IND v PAK at MCG 

 

First, we got to see some amazing fight back by Pakistan. Shan Masood and Iftikhar ensured that Pakistan had a competitive total for its bowlers. For Ind, Sir Don Pandya put a spanner into Pakistan's progress after it had taken on Indian spinners. Picked up 3 quick wkts to ensure that Ind was not chasing 180-190. 

 

In the 2nd inning, Ind was left at 31/4. A memorable partnership b/w Kohli & Sir Don laid the foundation of an Indian win. Kohli matched his 2016 WC inning v Aus by scoring an 80 odd at a SR of 150+. Sir Don chipped in with 40, where he started the fight back, believing Ind could win and encouraging Kohli, then taking a back seat once Kohli was in his zone. 

 

Pak may feel unlucky that it lost to an outlier performance, however, if they look deeper, it was their overreliance on playing only 5 bowlers that hurt it. For Ind, bowlers like Axar had a terrible day. If Ind had to finish Axar's over, Pak could well have touched 190. There is no way Nawaz should have been bowling the last over so Pak has its strategy and tactics to blame as well.

Match 19 AUS v SL at Perth 

 

After an easy capitulation against NZ in its opening game, AUS showed signs of gaining confidence. As its game versus SL is not a pressure one like its games against NZ & ENG, many Aus batsmen attempted to play more freely. Stoinis made 56 off 18 balls w/ 6 6s. Among bowlers who completed their spell for AUS, Starc was the most economical, going at 5.75 ER in 4 overs while picking up a wicket. SL had its moments but lacked overall quality to pull through, dropped a few catches as well.

WC is now at an interesting juncture 

 

Group 1 

 

NZ has a foot in the door for the SF. Only way it can miss out is if it loses its last 2 games 

 

For AUS & ENG, all the remaining group games are virtual knockouts. Only way both can go to the knockouts is if NZ loses both its remaining games 

 

 

Group 2 

 

IND, SA, & ZIM are unbeaten so far

England deserves to play the semi final. 

 

They were well on their way to win the game against Ireland before rain robbed them off 2 crucial points. 

 

Australia got thrashed by NZ like minnows.
