MechEng Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Looking at how frequently Bumrah breaks down, a part of me thinks that too much lean muscle is causing fatigues and injuries. Look at Malcolm Marshall and Andy Roberts, they did not have massive forearms and shoulders, regular healthy physiques and they bowled at tez raftaar.... Brett Lee, Shane Bond, Dale steyn and Shoaib Akhtar did look ripped or buffed but apart from them all phaasst bowlers had normal physiques. Now time to come out of Kohli's crazy fitness standards and just enjoy your bowling.
singhvivek141 Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Gym is needed for muscle strengthening and development, which has a support role in the overall betterment of the fitness. Problem is when people start going overboard with it, as it increases the stiffness and hence upscales the chances of injury. Chakdephatte, Vk1 and BacktoCricaddict 3
IndianRenegade Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Bumrah’s issue is more to do with his action no?

Vilander Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Op is probably a typical western indian midget...
express bowling Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) Bumrah has had just 3 injuries in his almost 7 year old career. Pretty standard for a pacer. Many pacers have had much more frequent injuries. Edited October 19, 2022 by express bowling Mosher, SRT100, Vk1 and 1 other 1 3
express bowling Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) Most pacers of yesteryears, who have had long and successful careers, say that the most important thing is to bowl in lots of actual matches. Nowadays, pacers rest a bit too much. Edited October 19, 2022 by express bowling SRT100 and Mosher 1 1

They just seem to show up at the most inopportune times - but then again, it's probably because he is so good, there is no "good" time for him to get hurt.

Check.out the number of FC and List A games many of top older pacers played even after test debut. For example Malcolm Marshall 408 FC matches including tests 440 List A matches including ODIs. Courtney Walsh 429 FC including trsts 440 List A including ODIs Compare this with a modern fast bowler who is nearing the end of his career and has played a lot Mitchell Starc 122 FC matches including tests 136 List A matches including ODIs 118 T20s In FC, they regularly bowled 30 to 60 overs per match. A T20 can have maximum 4 overs per bowler. If you calculate the number of overs bowled, the difference will be insane. Edited October 19, 2022 by express bowling Vk1, Mosher, SRT100 and 1 other 1 3

Cummins and starc also had multiple stress fractures. Medical facilities and training is much better now to offset these injuries. These injuries are bound to happen for a genuine quick. Bowling Fast and sustaining fitness are 2 diff things. Deepak Chahar and Bhuvi aren't fast, still they're injured or have been injured for a long time in the past. Umesh Yadav is fast but he don't get injured that often. Bowling fast also depends on muscle movement, action and momentum to the crease, If I remeber correctly, Brett Lee's action was changed which helped him gain pace. As I mentioned, gym aids in muscle strengthing and development, it's a part of fitness. You can replace it with desi malkhamb and pushups as well if that helps. However, there has been examples in the past where cricketers try to hit gym just to lift heavy weights in order to look jacked, and in result end up getting themselves injured. Irfan Pathan accepted that he injured himself while trying to lift too much weight. I go to gym 3 days a week for weightlifting and do running/cardio for remaining 3 days to keep my body flexible enough + maintain muscle strength. It helps me maintaining my fitness levels whenever I play match for longer duration without draining myself out in sun.
