Our full strength team was more than a match to Pakistan even in their best years. Jadeja was a massive blow, he was at his peak, around 30 and could been a terrific middle order batter for the next four years, I think even Imran said during 1991 series in Sharjah, India had a superior team, young Sachin, manjrekar was terrific against Pak, shastri, Azhar, sidhu, Kapil, Prabhakar, Srinath, Raju, kumble. Pretty solid team that was, we probably underachieved then. rollingstoned, AuxiliA, raki05 and 1 other 4

Shoaib Akhtar was bowling 139-142. If you believe Pakistani and some Indian Akhtar never bowl below 145 and Akram and Younis even at the time of retirement were bowling around 135-140. Agarkar hitting 140kph with his slim physique. Indian bowlers played here straight after the test series so I guess some tiring. raki05 1
rollingstoned Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 I had forgotten how much slower balls were used even back then. Good video and brings back memories. We got thrashed in that test series but the team wasn't all that bad imo.

I have no doubt that had he been 6 ft tall, he would have bowled in 150's. rollingstoned 1

He was short, his easy going runup and action, incredible how he generated such speeds, he was wiry, packed a punch with the bat and had a rocket arm from the deep. Aggy's problem was his control, (lack of), and his tendency to bowl the fuller length even in situations where it didn't work well. That was a double edged sword for him, because it fetched him a lot of wickets, especially early on in his ODI career, but it also led to him being smacked around on a regular basis. But as per Pakistani and some manjarekar type Indians only thing they hype them for thembeing Phaast. if you look at the video posted waqar speed looks pathetic than Sandeep Sharma , Wasim is a different beast but his speed was also like tired Bhuvi. Shoaib is literally bowling 140ish but as per @Adamant he never bowls below 148 even in test. Spot on, none of them were phast, all medium fast trundlers. raki05 1

I remember watching this match ...some basic mistakes including Dighe standing back and keeping both the gloves on. India had them on ropes at 6/71 and then 7/121 with all tailenders left. For a low scoring match like this the slips should have been in place all the time and Indian ground fielding (despite outstanding catch by dravid) was not up to the mark. In end the match could have still gone India's way with little bit of luck. rollingstoned 1

Younis till date is salty due to that assault by Jadeja, turned Waqar into Bekar. That was World Cup. My comment was about some other matches in which those legends did not play.

That's blasphemous , all these bowlers probably bowled around 150-160 kph in that match. It was just the jealous Gora speed gun engineers who messed with the settings so it would register trundler speeds . It was a big Saazish I tell you !!!Chuckte Raho TC raki05 1

One thing I liked about both Nehra and Agarkar was their attempt to always bowl quickly and look to take wickets. It meant both were expensive and not always appreciated by us though and in Agarkars case it seemed everyone was determined to turn him into Kapil dev which later even Irfan Pathan suffered from. sandeep and raki05 2

If a young Nehra had debuted after 2017 or so, he would have been yards better than what Shaheen Afridi is today. Nehra was quality, but Indian cricket did not know how to get the best out of pace bowlers back then. If he had stayed injury free a bit more, and had played county cricket early in his career, he could have been special.
Grand_Design Posted March 27, 2023 Posted March 27, 2023 Don't want to remember this period of Indian ODI cricket. It's shocking how poor we were in the format until 2007. This was Pakistan's greatest ever ODI side (Jan 1999 - June 2002) and we were a terrible side . Until 2007, we used to get regularly beaten by a declining Windies side even .

Made 2 ICC CT finals in 2000 and 2002, made the WC final in 2003 to lose to that ATG juggernaut and won an away series in Pakistan in 2004 and the memorable Natwest trophy finals where Yuvi and Kaif made a name for themselves in 2002. We lost some away odi series which was nothing out of the ordinary and had some big losses to SL in Sharjah and the Asia cup but other than that we played some pretty good cricket and under Chappell and after Dhoni becoming the WK reached new heights compared to the 90s. By that time at least the Indian audience turning off the tv because Sachin got out was well and truly behind us at least. diga 1
