It says 4th century AD. If we go that far then half of India would trace their roots to Bihar given it was the power centre of India for a thousand years.

Rashtrakutas pre-date Chalukyas. Kannada is older than Marathi and was all spread over the Deccan region as early as 100 AD. If inscriptions are dated to 300 AD, consider that the language was practically there already a 500 years before. It is considered that Kannada had derived from Maharashtri Prakrit which even later gave birth to Marathi. This Dravidian root of southern languages is a 18th century construct by Caldwell and other Jesuits. A lot of Marathi and Kannada words are common and so is Kannada and Tamil. All languages in India have root from Sanskrit/Prakrit and we are fighting over individual language identities for nothing.

Actually there are 3 chalukya dynasties : Chalukyas of Badami, who were around at end of Gupta period to Harshavardhana period and sometime a bit after ( 500s CE-700s CE), they made cadet ( junior branch) as Vengi Chalukyas and ruled Vengi continuously from around 700s CE to around 1200 CE. Rashtrakutas i believe overthew the Badami chalukyas, then ruled from 700s to mid 900s, then Chalukyas return to power in karnataka as 'western chalukyas' ( because at that time, the cadet branch still ruled vengi, aka eastern chalukyas).

Kannada is basically a north Indian language with south Indian script and grammar structure, because as you correctly identified,it is descended from prakrit marathi. but reality also, is that prakrit marathi never became popular as a language as its kannada descendant, till the rise of marathi speaking Seuna Yadavas around 1100 AD, after collapse of the western Chalukyas.

we think marathi as language of the masses replaced Kannada in most of maharashtra in this Seuna Yadava period to Delhi Sultanate transition period, so basically 1200-1350s period.

 

Tamil may not have root from sanskrit but tamil is basically heavily sanskritised, its basically what hindi is today with liberal use of english words/failure to make new hindi words for new things and just using english words ( there is no hindi word made for computer- we just use english word during hindi speech. Same applies to many many sanskrit loanwords in tamil due to similar influence of sanskrit on tamil.

Have you never been to KC Das in kolkata or what ? we have cricket ball sized rosgullas there and thats standard size from the glass cases. They make things bigger if you wish.
My mama got married and we got sweets from them for marriage and everyone got one coconut sized rosgolla for dessert lol. They can easily make naan sized sondesh for you.

Me however, i believe we dont live in caveman days and count burning sticks to figure out age, so on my 75th birthday soon, i will just need TWO candles - one that says 7 and another that says 5. I think i can fit them on normal sized sondesh if i want.

 

But i didnt realize you are ALSO cake traitor...yet you said you LOVE indian and bengali misti. How could you betray me like this. I feel cheated upon.

KC Das store near Esplanade? The client ordered for us. It was the Rasmalai. I took some back to Mumbai but it didn't travel well.

 

At the risk of committing blasphemy, it was the SC Das store where I enjoyed the sweets much more.

YES! thats the one. Super easy access for locals too coz its right across from esplanade metro. Good luck crossing that british era 7 way road with 6 lanes of traffic though.

They make decent/good quality misti but nothing extra special. Their main attraction is, they are truly American burgerland in food mentality and make portion size what a 300 kilo american fatty would expect from a rosgolla.

Which is novelty to us.

If you like normal golf ball sized rogolla there are plenty better stores in kolkata.

But real bongs dont get excited over normal bong misti like rosgolla, sondesh, rasmalai. Or even rabri or pithe - these are basically hi-fi store bought/normal dessert.
What gets us excited are LOCAL variations. Like Joynogor-er moa ( its the size of a cricket ball and its so soft and juicy and yet crunch).
Or Krishnonogor-er shor-puria. ( char-fried milk film with nuts and sweet dressing).

These are what makes bong go 'waaaao'.

(1) It's a freakkin starch test. I am not sure where the "toxicity" or "danger" is coming from.  Starch is just added to harden the paneer. In my experience, the starch-hardened paneers offer better stabilty during deep-frying. This video acts as if starch is some poison that will kill you. The problem is not that it has starch; the problem is that things are not labeled well and regulated consistently. All they need to do is label the paneer as containing added starch so that people who are diabetic can eat less of it if they choose. 

 

Here, in the US, there are 2 brands - Nanak and Haldiram - at the desi store. Nanak has starch - it is firm and I use it to make anything that requires frying the paneer. Haldiram's does not contain starch. It is soft and works really well for dishes where you don't fry the paneer. 

 

What is really funny is that the same people who will complain about getting a small amount of starch from their paneer will be perfectly fine with loading up on 100x as much starch from the maida naan that they ate with the paneer butter masala.

 

(2) Acetic acid - it's just vinegar. It's not some scary chemical. Of course it shows up; vinegar is a good choice to curdle milk. People use vinegar in cooking all the time - it's not like we are drinking bottles of vinegar.

 

(3) Analogue Paneer - I don't see it as being less healthful than paneer. When you break it down, it probably has the same amount of protein (milk powder) and saturated fat (whether it came from palm oil or a cow or Yamraj's gaaDi, it's still saturated fat). The only problem again is that you be told that it is analogue paneer, so if you're a paneer-snob, you can choose to avoid it. It's not toxic.
