rollingstoned
Ravi Shastri's Urgent Call to Replenish Aging India Test Squad, Delivers Harsh Reality Check To India Selectors Story by Times Now Digital • Yesterday 5:53 pm Former India coach Ravi Shastri suggested the Indian selectors to take a leaf out of Australia's book in terms of how they go about handling the transition phase, asking them to draw up a plan and have a vision in order to replenish the Indian Test team. Barring Shubman Gill, the top six batters in the Indian team that took part in the recently-concluded World Test Championship final (WTC) against Australia are all above 34 that include the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane and Ravindra Jadeja. “That’s what the think-tank and the selectors will have to sit and see, draw a plan, have the vision to see how you replenish your squad. Australians are very good at doing that over the years. They see where they want to be in three years’ time. They don’t wait for suddenly five players to go away from the side,” Shastri told Star Sports. Citing Australia's model, the 60-year-old said that the Aussies are always in the process of getting the younger lot in the team and it helps them to get a great combination of youth and experience all the time while ensuring that the team is always healthy and strong. The former India World Cup-winning allrounder urged the selectors to take some tough calls in the bigger interest of the team. “They’re constantly getting in youth. So there’s a combination of youth and experience all the time. The youngsters learn quickly from the senior players. So your team is healthy and strong right through. So that planning has to be done. They’re hard calls, people might not like it, but it’s the team’s interest that is paramount and that’s how you should look at it,” he said. India succumbed to a 209-run loss against Australia in the World Test Championship final and with the average age of the side being close to 32, it is important for the selectors to start the transition at the earliest. A lot of players who played in the recently-concluded WTC final will be between 36 and 38 when the next final is scheduled to take place in 2025. Edited June 15, 2023 by rollingstoned Link to comment

BacktoCricaddict
Shastri is wrong. Selectors don't need to learn from Australia. They can learn from the evidence that is staring them in their faces - their own team's experience, when the right combination of talented, hungry youngsters and some experienced guys engineered victories against an excellent Ozzie team in their own backyard just 2.5 yrs ago. AKane
I have noticed a lot of people in power suddenly get common sense AFTER they retire or are voted out of power. When they are in their chair and in power they never seem to have any common sense. rkt.india, Frustrated, Stan AF and 1 other 1 3 Link to comment

Even cricinfo statsguru can be a better selector. Because evidence is all too clear. But the fake hype generated by these commies in the commentary box play a role in persisting with the repeat failures. Look at how they went gaga over Rahane's re-entry forgetting his horrendous run. raki05 1 Link to comment
bowl_out
That works for them because they have a process of phasing out experienced players. In our world, youngsters become experienced, get hero-worshipped and stay on till they are 40 without any opportunity for a new youngster to come in rollingstoned, Vijy, cricketfan28 and 2 others 1 4 Link to comment

At least the ones left out in the cold by the "good old boys" Indian cricketing system have somewhere to play and shine and earn some good money. Else if you are not lucky enough to squeeze in right after U19 - you could be waiting until mid thirties. It is even worse for fast bowlers who have a short shelf life compared to all others. rkt.india 1 Link to comment
Sandeep99
Get in hungry domestic performers and watch them shine. 2021-22 Australia is one of the prime examples of what happens when you blend youthful exuberance with knowledgeable seniors. I find it funny that one has been who conveniently went away for child birth is back into the squad without an iota of performance and continues to screw up Indian chances at every possible occasion with his performance and bad influence on the team. rollingstoned and tweaker 2 Link to comment
