Mukesh Kumar’s journey is of any youngster from smaller cities and villages, who leave their homes, and move to the metro cities to chase their dreams, to make a life for themselves and their family.

For the past eight years, Kumar has been a bulwark for Bengal. A favourite for the coaches because he can bowl longer spells and nightmare for the batters because he will not give them an inch.

Former Bengal coach, Arun Lal, shares an interesting story about Kumar. He says, “The thing that impressed me the most was his ability to bowl long spells in that probing outside off-stump line throughout the day. If you have seen Mohammed Abbas of Pakistan, he is just like him. He is not 140kmph, but he will not give you an inch. If Mukesh is bowling, you need a couple of good slip fielders.”

The secret of Kumar’s ability to bowl longer spells is his habit of training outdoors and bowl longer spells in the nets.

Mukesh played four games in his debut season only to get injured in 2016-17 after playing two matches.

It was once again struggle as he lost rhythm and was sidelined with the return of Mohammed Shami and Ashok Dinda in their ranks.

But he came to the fore once again in 2018-19 when he impressed with 22 wickets from five matches and went on to form Bengal’s formidable three-pronged pace attack with Ishan Porel and Akash Deep who took Bengal to two Ranji Trophy finals, in 2019-20 and 2022-23.

He has not looked back since then. An India A regular, Mukesh has 18 wickets at 17.50 average including five-fors against New Zealand A and Bangladesh A.

What to do. Stat people will harp on stats. Now we are stuck with him. Have to play him over more deserving players for sena nations.

In sena we need hit the deck bouncy bowlers and some swingers. He is neither here nor there. Hope he can do well.

He is with the team for many series, but team management doesn't have confidence in him.

He may have bowl to them in nets ,if he was special, he would have made debut by now

First, utmost respect to him for his achievements!

It appears that he is a tireless, steady, no-nonsense bowler - like say Colin deGrandhomme.  Which means he gets most of his domestic wickets from batsman's lack of patience/technique. Which is fine - he could pin the bats down on one end and the more attacking bowlers could capitalize.  There is no reason to ridicule him, but in today's cricket, his role would be best provided by someone who brings batting skills to the table as well.

While his stats are great, they could be misleading.  But, if he is in the XI, I will root like hell for his success.

With this TM, there is no telling why someone is/is not in the team. So, I wouldn't judge him by that yardstick.

Looks like @tweaker and I can rationalize and talk ourselves into supporting any new player who is selected into the India XI.

If he is with the team for so long and selected again ,he should be given opportunity.

He should not be place holder and should be dumped .without giving him games.

I really want him to perform well and he should be undropable.

i love the above statement you made. i was in the first row of an IPL Match and I was supporting Umesh Yadav- he was bowling fast and also swinging the bowl last year in the IPL- But his knack of bowling one SHORT Ball outside the offstump and the batsman square cutting him easily - all his life he bowled 4 jaffa's and 2 use less balls in the over- i wish he improved and I supported him n appreciated him , even appreciated him on his insta and twitter page too. even now i think he is better than MUkesh Kumar but he should have done better in england so he got what he deserved.

i would like to back tall fast bowlers like Mohsin ( if fit), arshdeep, Harshit , even Umran ( as he pace) , Kuldeep Sen, Prasidh ( he is unfit for too long ), Meerut fast bowler ( missing his name). they may not perform in the first game but getting coached by best coaches , they will Improve.

i m not sure Unadkat and Mukesh Kumar who bowl at 120 to 130 K and 127 to 135K can do to Improve. they are picked as they are READY Pacers - ready to Perform.

But are they good enough to even take West Indies batsman-

i kinda feel SIRAJ and SHardul will perform much better than Unadkat Or Mukesh. if they had picked Kuldeep Sen - it would have been an aggressive opton.

Lets see how unadkat and Mukesh perform- i think only one of them will play in the test.

I don’t rate domestic performances high as the competition, unless among full strength top sides, can be ordinary. If I am not wrong, pitches at Kol have supported pace bowlers too recently.

Having watched Mukesh in IPL, he has certain strengths such as ability to swing the ball and ball consistently in certain channels. He can also be a work horse bowler.

Therefore considering the role and/or conditions, he can be a serviceable short term pick esp. considering the lack of availability of some of the bowlers due to injuries (or a relative lack of fitness for test cricket).

Mukesh Kumar is in all 3 squads (  Tests, ODIs and T20Is ) without playing a single game for India.

This must be some sort of a record.

Plus he is a short medium pacer, who lacks natural bounce, and is almost 30 years old.

Plus he averaged 46+ in this IPL with just 7 wickets from 10 matches, with ER of 10.5  ....  Averages 37 in List A    (  so why is he in the white ball squads ? )

There must be some scam going on.

He will.probably pick some wickets against a very weak WI batting lineup, and " justify " his selection, only to ffcuk us against better teams.

His stats are poor in white ball cricket, both the IPL and List A.  Averages 46+ and 37+ respectively.

Their selection is totally random. They don't analyze these things.

Kuldeep sen 6 matches 18 wickets 12.72 avge 5.34 ER in Vijay Hazare 2022

Kaverapp 8 matches 17 wickets 13.17 avge 3.53 ER

Hangargekar 8 matches 15 wickets  24.93 avge 5.84 ER

Heck even Avesh khan has decent numbers. Unadkat has decent numbers. But he is not a long term prospect in this format. Besides he is a cannon fodder in general for foerign players. We have seen enough.

Mukesh kumar 6 matches 9 wickets 25.11 avge 4.91 ER

Hope they didn't pick him for ER.

Not just ranji. He has been very good in A tours too. Don't like his skill set but I guess you have to reward him. He was deadly in England and new Zealand last time iirc in A tours so let's see. Maybe we can keep him as EN specialist and a support role at home?

He definitely does not suit Australia and SA is questionable too given lack of height or bounce.
