I can understand getting 10 or 12 overs from Pandya/Jadeja + someone like Verma.

When you count on 20 overs from Pandya/Jadeja + someone like Verma with only three regular bowlers being Bumrah/Siraj/Kuldeep.... you are badly exposed. This will not work.

You are 100% correct .It won't work, you need four full regular bowlers. If Jadeja is a part timer then he does not belong in the squad.

Gill at 3 and Kohli at 4 is a possibility.

Why is Rohit a certainity as an opener? He is slow starter and  like he screwed up India in world t20 , he will screw up here also.

5 hundreds in 2019 World Cup.

Slow starter isn't a problem in ODIs.

Shastri is talking like an idiot on why Dhawan's (leftie) missing last semifinal in 2019 was so crucial.

Pant was playing in that match and he had opened many times in IPL , why did both bozos( Kohli and Shasri) not break up top three and let Pant open.

Indian Coaching in big spot also has been a big failure just like players in last decade starting with Kumble electing to field after winning toss in CT 2017 finals.

There has to be a one left hander in there...  If Kela is fit & keeping then Tilak plays.

I'd add extra batter in SKY vs Pak.

Play one spinner Kuldeep vs Pak & Tilak's part time option.  Also enables us to play three strike pacers in Siraj Shami Bumrah.  Drop useless Bits n pieces Jadeja (he is root cause of all the problem imo)  fake A/R eats one spot & a useless darter.

Rohit

Gill

Kohli

Tilak

Rahul (wk)

SKY

Pandya

Shami

Kuldeep

Bumrah

Siraj

Tilak has not even debuted in ODIs. Also, your bowling is a bit vulnerable as you are relying on Pandya to bowl 7-8 overs regularly and on bad days for any premier bowler, you are expecting him to bowl 10 overs.

Jadeja has been bad but this is his best chance for redemption in ODIs. He averages 31-32 at home with bowl, in a good form with bat, won CSK the IPL final with bat. He is not going anywhere.

The simple mathematics tells us that on performance basis, you should have KL Rahul at 4( assuming Iyer is out) and Sanju Samson at 5. Kishan is backup opener. On days when India lose 2-3 quick wickets, send Jadeja at 5.

Lefty is a problem but it is too late to play Tilak in ODIs.In 2019, it was too late for the extremely talented Pant as well and we saw that when he got his chances, he received extreme level of criticism for lack of performances.

It was problem in t20s , he still started slow in T20 semi final and lost the match.

This 2023 and matches are being played in India on flat wickets. Slow starts will be a problem.

Well..... that was 4 years ago when Rohit was 32+.

Now he is 36+.

People are going to find both Rohit and Kohli have declined significantly since the last WC.

The decline happens suddenly - to quote Ernest Hemingway in an off topic but relevant remark..... "Slowly at first then all at once".

Ofcourse he isn't replicating anything like that this year. But I think as opener, he is best because he is used too of facing the new ball.

Both Kohli and Rohit have to put other players in best position to perform. If it means them changing their batting spots so be it.

No one has any spot for themselves.

I feel he is still the best WK in the middle order as there is no Pant.

Will he flop under pressure , yes he will flop but do we have anyone who is better?

I believe try someone like Kishan or even samson as they have done keeping at state level also they are not like deer in headlight in pressuring situation. These 2 are highly inconsistent but if they click they can destroy opposition in no time.

Jaiswal is a opener spot which is already crowded...  Tilak has more chance.  No one is talking about Jaiswal yet.  Not playing him in ODIs has safeguarded Rohit Kohli Gill

Because then you will have to drop one of Kohli or Rohit to accomodate him.

Tilak, Samson, KL, Kishan all are fighting for no 4 spot..Jaiswal don't fit there.

Unless TM go radical and open with Jaiswal-Gill and then drop Rohit to 3 and Kohli to 4..which means Kishan/KL will bat at 5 and SKY, Tilak are out of equation.

Pant himself should have opened for his franchise DC. He preferred middle order in the IPL even though he was the captain. Sometimes he came way down the order. During under-19 world cup he and Kishan opened the innings for India. But later he demoted himself.

Yes, he should have opened, I still feel Pant is going to be best opener if India wants to emulate England.

But that should not have stopped both idiots Shastri and Dravid from opening Pant in crucial matches.

Performance of Jaiswal and Tilak has been good.

It must be noted that the performance is against West Indies - one of the worst cricket playing countries currently in all forms of cricket.

They should be given a chance but the jury is still out on these guys - and Gill. The WC will be a different beast compared to the WI and Akeal Hosain and Obed McCoy and Romario Shepherd types. Be prepared for unpleasant surprises.

Where Will They Play?': Ravi Shastri's Harsh Verdict on KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer's Chances in Asia Cup

Ravi Shastri expresses his views on KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer

Injuries are part and parcel of the game and the Indian cricket team has dealt many in the recent past. Several superstars have been away from action in the past few months. But as the Asia Cup 2023 approaches, they also seem to be on their way back.

Team India team received a massive boost with the return of Jasprit Bumrah. The ace Indian quick is set to play his first international match since September last year. He will lead a bunch of youngsters in a three-match T20I series against Ireland, starting Friday in Dublin. On the other hand, the likes of KL Rahul and Shreyas Iyer are also pushing themselves hard for a comeback.

But former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels that Bumrah can play in the forthcoming continental championship but rushing in Rahul and Iyer won’t be a great idea because they need to play a few matches before heading into the tournament.

“They have to play matches, give them some matches before the Asia Cup. They should be picked in the team na. Abhi to shuru ho jata hai Asia Cup (Asia Cup is about to start now). Where will they play?” said Shastri on Star Sports.

“Injuries happen. You have to be careful. You try to rush just with Bumrah. Not once, not twice, three times, I mean and he’s been sitting out for 14 months now,” he said.

Shastri further suggested having a total of three left-handers in the line-up and would like to play Ishan Kishan right at the top of the order, as a partner of Rohit Sharma.

“[Shall play Ishan Kishan] at the top of the order, nowhere else. And the others have to be flexible,” Shastri told Star Sports.

“Between Rohit, Virat and Gill… that can be 2, 3, 4,” he added.

Highlighting the importance of left-handers in the line-up, Shastri recalled India’s defeat against New Zealand in the 2019 World Cup. He said India lost the game despite having a great run in the tournament and Shikhar Dhawan, who was ruled out midway, was the missing man.

“And a very important point is, I was a coach at that time, and I keep saying that people don’t give the credit that Shikhar Dhawan deserves. I mean, that guy was an amazing player. You mention the World Cup in 2019 where we lost that semifinal, when we had a brilliant World Cup, he was the missing man there. You know, that made such a big difference – a left-hander at the top of the order, as opposed to three right-handers with the ball swinging away, which allowed teams to get a grip on where to bowl and bowl consistently,” Shastri explained.

World Cup 2023: Ravi Shastri names four all-rounders he wants in India squad, suggests four pacers in eleven

Ravi Shastri has suggested that India should have four all-rounders in their squad for the World Cup 2023 and Asia Cup 2023. The former head coach said that Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur should also be in the team with two main all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Hardik Pandya.

Further, Ravi Shastri also suggested that Sanju Samson can be kept on standby and inducted in the team in case there is an injury.

world-cup-2023-ravi-shastri-names-four-all-rounders-he-wants-in-india-squad

“I think to be fair, I will go with both the all-rounders - Axar and Shardul, it gives me an opportunity. And keep Sanju Samson on standby in case something happens to the keeper there, where he can just fly out," he said while speaking to Star Sports on the 'Selection Day’ show. Pacers are important, will have four of them in playing eleven:

Shastri The former all-rounder also asserted that pacers would be crucial to India's campaign at the two events and having four of them in the playing eleven would be an apt decision. He said that Hardik Pandya can tag with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami, and one between Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur can be picked.

"So, now you start with the pacers because, for me, the pacers are important. If you need four over there, you already have one all-rounder (Pandya). So, if Bumrah is fit, he walks in. Shami walks in – that's two. You've got Siraj as a backup, and if needed, Shardul can be there. Shardul has done well in the West Indies one-day game; he can be a backup. And then you have room for one more," he said.

Former chief of selectors Sandeep Patil agreed with Shastri. He said, "I will go with what Ravi said because I want to remember 1983. The combination we had, we had many all-rounders in the team, and having all-rounders in the team gives you so much variety, and you can choose anybody."

This World Cup is a gone case, there are no 2 thoughts about it.

This team has so many gaps and holes to fill that we're still not sure whom to put where.

Yes Jaiswal and Tilak were playing vs WI, but KLR isn't the answer, he is a guaranteed failure. So it's a question of entering into the World Cup with a known failure or with an unknown potential...I would take my punt on the unknown potential because with KL I'm sure what we're going to get, and that's not sufficient.

Part of me says I don't want Jaiswal or Tilak there because I don't want them to face the consequences of the fallout from the Cup.  They have not played enough before the Cup and now expecting them to deliver miracles is unfair to them.  This is a bit like Pant supposedly failing in the World Cup last time with no blame attached to Dhoni despite the massive difference in experience.

During the 5th t20 vs windies, some posters were delighted to see Chahal getting pasted all over the park. (4 over 52/0) hoping that he would be dropped henceforth.  But there is report of only Sanju getting dropped.  Means collar chewer has retained his place (under Malnourished Quota).   He actually needed to concede min 1000 runs in 4 overs so as to lose his place. :hysterical:

I know it's brutal for them, but that's our last throw of dice.

I've no hopes with Rohit, KL, Pandya.

Gill, Kohli and SKY are the ones who will make some runs here and there but it won't suffice.

Kishan/Samson may play 1 or 2 good inns in the tournament and that's it.

None of the seniors above give me any confidence. It's like a Deja vu of 2019 where MSD and Kedar were blocking the deliveries, here KL and Pandya will do the same.
