AuxiliA
Desis, unless they are born or raised in the west, are not eloquent English speakers, understandably so. They can't compete with the native English speaking commentators. It just doesn't come naturally to them. Make peace with it. deepdynamo
The treacherous trio of Indian commentary- Gavaskar, Shastri and Bhogle. They have been commentating since 90's and full of stale cliches, repeated phrases, humourless punches and no real cricker insight. On top of that, they have alao become BCCI watchdogs. Later on, Manjerkar joined them and become part of the circus. Then there are boring one tone BCCI cheerleaders like Murali Karrik ans Deep Das Gupta. The Indian english commentary team is incredibly dull despite having all the money. The only Indian commentator I like is Ajit Agarkar ( until he become the chief selector) and Irfan Pathan (hindi). Apart from them, its shitshow everywhere. tweaker, express bowling and Gollum 1

I remember Amitabh Bachchan tweeting against Harsha out of nowhere. Then he began sugar coating everything he said and lost his panache. They shared some radio or some English commentary for the same event. Damn that was surreal. In cricket there used to be a role "Expert commentator". May be they should create a role for Harsha. "Random talk expert" something like that. calling the event should be left to someone better. Gollum and tweaker

When you see him talking normally in discussions, he appears sober and quite well spoken. However in front of the TV mike, he has taken up shouting loudly and often talks way too much for TV..it's almost like a radio commentator. On top of that he has adopted a very affected, pretentious way of speaking as if he is trying very hard to get plaudits for the way he frames sentences rather than the quality of his insights. The sum total of all this is that he is near the top of my "must mute" list of Indian commentators ( Shastri, Manju and Gavaskar are also there) Edited April 18 by lemsip Vk1 and Gollum

He feels a compulsion to bring up EPL out of nowhere to probably show how 'hip' he is and make personal comments that he believes will make the atmosphere 'casual' but lands almost always like a wet fart eg. Once remembered him remarking about Alastair Campbell's weight on air which he didn't appreciate just because a ball hit a batsman in thr midsection. Richie benaud used to rightly say that commentating is more about knowing when not to talk and addng to the viewer experience rather than constantly blabbering inanities on air. I know he is not an ex cricketer but a guy like that should at least soak up knowledge and insight from people like Bishop or be an articulate MC who has a sense of occassion. This fellow is a Virat chomu at that too. express bowling and Gollum
express bowling
Most of the commentators, Indian or foreign, don't think about what may interest the fans. They just talk about what interests them personally. Bishop, Mbangwa, Robinson and Doull are exceptions. Additionally, most Indian commentators are low on analysis and knowledge about non-superstar players. Not sure even in their native languages if the Desi commentators make any sense. Hindi commentary is pretty average with no insights, Bhojpuri & Haryanvi commentary can't even be considered as a commentary...it's more like someone giving narration during a local district level tournament. Not sure about other languages. Gollum

For Indian commentators it seems there is no feedback mechanism for them to take inputs and improve. It seems to be a cozy club where the same old guys have been talking on and on for decades without any progress. That certainly wouldn't work in any other profession. In the UK sky got rid of guys like Botham, Gower, David Lloyd etc as they recognised the need to bring in a fresher group to appeal to the younger audience. In India almost all commentators have been at it since the 90s. Something sad about a bunch of people in their 70s and 60s desperately trying stay relevant to a much younger audience.
