I just don't get the idea of govt presence in religious organizations. That has to end first. In all directions.

I just don't get the idea of both siding or all siding. Why don't we directly address issues ? Is it the fear of being labelled a bigot or anti certain set of people ?

There are 2 issues:

 

(a) That a civil servant is encouraging conversion to a specific religion - in this case, Islam. It is obviously condemnable. And everyone who has posted so far has condemned it.

 

(b) The bigger issue, which often goes under the radar because we are focused on the first issue is (IMO) the issue of government officials getting involved in religious matters and vice versa (the "all directions" phrase in my previous post). I am very sensitive to it because, here in the US South, the already-blurry lines between state and Church are becoming even blurrier. Plus, when I was growing up, I have heard conversations among my relatives expressing their angst at politicians using control of temples and Devaswom boards to rake in power and money.
