Did he play 200 tests against Pakistan? Sachin scored 2 centuries in 18 tests and averaged 42 against Pak. Root scored 5 centuries in 37 tests and averaged 40 against Australia. I would say they are about even

Did I say anything else. People here are trying to hold Root scoring just single 100 against him.

But are coming up with excuses when it comes to Sachin.

It is like MJ vs Lebron, some people cannot digest the fact that Lebron has passed MJ in every statistic.

Well he hasn't passed in any statistic yet in this case. He's on course, but we thought the same thing about Virat too at one stage and we know how that turned out to be.

The very threat is making people nervous, people have come up with various excuses already on why Sachin is better odi player than Kohli.

Because he had big ego and a many times his big shots came after 100 which prevented him from getting big 100s.

I don't think it is ego.IMO him making debut at such young age hurt him.Scoring big 100s is also about muscle memory, he never had an experience of scoring big 100s as he never a chance to do it in FC cricket. You have to pace your innings for scoring big 100s.

It took him a decade to score his first test double 100 .Once he reached his first he did score 7 double 100s.

Technically there has been no one who is better than Sachin, he had a flawless technique which he also could modify on the fly. Sachin was a genius that he could play with two completely different techniques at both ends of the same pitch. He also could change based on different venues.

If he had an ego, he would not have stopped playing cover drive for whole innings.

He had big ego of premier barsman in first 10-12 years of his career.

The range of Sachin was unmatcahable. 31 years back. He reached 100 with a hook shot for six.  Henry blofeld calling it. I think Collin croft was the other commentator.

Ravi shastri/ARunlal all sound like little girls hahaha. Kapil was also doing commentary back then

Shastri used to imitate Amitabh Bachchan's tone, and in the process, his pitch eventually became quite heavy in his 40s

How do you know it is ego and not his playing style?

One thing which held Tendulkar back was that in his peak years in 90s (94-98) he didn't get to play too many Tests. India used to prioritize ODIs those days and didn't have the financial clout they have now. At max they used to play a 3 Test series and barely 5-7 Tests a year. Imagine Kohli's record if India would've done the same thing at his peak from 2015-2019 - he would've averaged in 30s!

Root gets the luxury of playing 12-15 Tests every year whereas Tendulkar played half as many per year at his peak. Tendulkar's average would've been closer to 58 instead of 54 if he played the same no. of Tests at his peak. Plus lack of DRS always made him the target of most umpires. He couldn't review Shoulder Before Wkt and multiple similar decisions.

If we consider good performance in successive years as peak   i see 11 year peak for Sachin.  10 years for Root.  But Root In 10 years played more 16 tests in Sachin's 11 year peak.

Two more things. Since Sachin started very early he was mostly stuck at no.5  or 6 i think for 8 or 9 years.  During that phase He didn't get to play many tests.  So there was no peak. Lara was 4 years older than Sachin. He was matured. He was reeling out 200s, 300s at that time.   Root on the other hand didn't take long to hit the peak as he made debut late.  Also between 1st and 2nd  peak Root took 3 years. Basically he played more or less the same set of bowlers most of his career.  Opening bowler in the Ashes for Australia on Root's maiden Ashes test was Mitch Starc. Most recent Ashes test opening bowler was Mitch starc.  It is almost like he played all his 150 plus tests in a single era.

Tendulkar used to bat at 5 or 6 when he started off but started batting at 4 starting mid 90s.

If Root after doing everything and his average falls below 50 at the end of his career, nobody will consider him even as a legend of the game.

Plenty of legends retired on the verge of 50 average. Viv Richards was just one bad innings away from a sub 50 avg when he retired, but he would have a legend regardless.

A volume of 16000+ runs puts him in elite tier even at a 49 avg

I remember reading an article in newspaper in 2002 that 55 is new 50 when Andy Flower became top batsman.

That was the time shift was acknowledged and we became used to seeing good batsmen averaging 45+ and great ones 55.

It's back to that time when great ones can avg 48-51.
