Gautam Gambhir, who wants to end the superstar culture inside the dressing room, is in a tricky spot as his head coach job is in danger. 

All is not well within the Indian dressing room, and this is no longer a secret. The Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss against Australia after 10 years has opened a pandora's box, and head coach Gautam Gambhir is feeling the heat. The head coach is facing criticism after a string of poor Test results, which saw India lose back-to-back series against New Zealand and Australia.

For the first time, India have not made it to the World Test Championship (WTC) final. Recently, BCCI's top brass met with Gambhir, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma to review India's disastrous performance Down Under.

 

 

A news agency PTI report now claims that Gambhir's future will be evaluated after the Champions Trophy, which begins February 19. There is also a growing concern about Gambhir's push to end the "superstar culture" inside the dressing room.

Ever since Gambhir took over the side, India has lost six out of 10 Tests and an ODI series in Sri Lanka.

The Border-Gavaskar Trophy loss has also raised questions about Virat Kohli's and Rohit Sharma's future after the duo failed to get going with the bat. While Rohit managed just 31 runs in 3 Tests, Virat scored 190 runs in 9 innings.

"If India doesn't do well in the Champions Trophy, the head coach's position could become untenable. Yes, his contract runs till the 2027 World Cup, but the process of evaluation continues. Sport is result-oriented and till now, Gambhir hasn't given any tangible results," PTI quoted a BCCI source as saying.

'Gambhir and players not on the same page'

As per the report in PTI, Gautam Gambhir and senior squad members are not on the same page regarding team culture. The India head coach wants to end the superstar culture within the Indian setup; however, some members have not received this very well.

 

It has come to light that Gambhir was not pleased with some star players' specific demands about hotels and practice times during the tour of Australia.

"Gambhir wants to end the superstar culture that has been prevalent for so many years now. As captain of Kolkata Knight Riders in 2012, he had dropped Brendon McCullum from the playing XI for the IPL final against CSK," PTI quoted a source, who has seen Gambhir's functioning closely.

"He has come here to dismantle the superstar culture and that's what has caused discomfort for some playing members," a source, who has seen Gambhir's functioning closely, the source added.

In all likelihood, Gambhir's tenure will boil down to how India perform in the upcoming Champions Trophy. India are grouped alongside Pakistan, New Zealand and Bangladesh.

India will open their campaign on February 20 against Bangladesh at the Dubai International Stadium.

For me the home whitewash was the last straw, that too against a mediocre NZ side.....2000 RSA, 2004 Aus, 2012 Eng were great sides and each of them had 5-6 ATGs/country greats at the peak of their powers. Here NZ conceded a 550 runs first innings lead in Lanka before coming to India. 

 

5-6 players/coaches should have been fired on the spot for such a massive * up.

India coach Gautam Gambhir's stocks took a significant dip after India's defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. Gambhir was rated highly in Indian cricket given his tremendous achievements in IPL that saw him lead Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to two IPL wins as a captain and one title as a mentor. However, his stint with team India so far has been a shaky ride with India suffering defeats to New Zealand and Australia.

 

Gambhir's coaching style has also been under the scanner. According to reports, Gambhir and a few senior players are not on the same page. It is learnt that Gambhir was not pleased with how a few players put forward specific demands of hotels and practice timings during the Australia tour while players felt a lack of communication from his end.

 

A former BCCI selector lashed out at Gambhir for his work culture and linked his style to former coach Greg Chappell, who had a fall-out with senior players. The ex-selector said Gambhir should follow the player-friendly approach of Ravi Shastri, Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten, and John Wright which is the only way to succeed in India.

 

"Either you be like a Ravi Shastri, who would be media-friendly, give those sound bites propping up players making them look like alpha males," said the former selector, according to a PTI report quoted by NDTV.

 

"Or be like Rahul Dravid, Gary Kirsten or John Wright, who would remain aloof, letting the players hog the limelight. The 'Chappell Way' doesn't work in India. Gambhirs or Shastris or Dravids will go but players will stay," he added.

 

 

The recent outings put Gambhir's career as India coach in jeopardy, however, the BCCI is unwilling to take any strict action soon, according to reports. The Champions Trophy, however, could be a critical tournament for Gambhir and if the team fails to do well, the India coach could be in trouble.

ndia coach Gautam Gambhir reportedly pulled up bowling coach Morne Morkel for arriving late for a practice session during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. According to the report in Times Of India, Gambhir, who is very strict about discipline, did not take it lightly when Morkel came late for the practice session, and the former India cricketer reprimanded him publically. A source told TOI that Morkel became reserved for the rest of the tour after facing Gambhir's fury. India suffered a 3-1 defeat to Australia in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy after which BCCI called up a meeting to review India's horrible outing on the tour. The Gambhir-Morkel act is the latest addition to multiple incidents of unrest in the Indian dressing room that have come to light in the last few days.

 

“Gambhir is very strict about discipline. He reprimanded Morkel immediately at the ground. The board has been told that Morkel was a bit reserved during the rest of the tour. It is up to these two to sort it out to allow the team to function smoothly,” a BCCI source told TOI.

 

Meanwhile, the defeat raised questions on the role of assistant coaches Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate in team India. The BCCI reportedly has sought a response from the players if Abhishek Nayar and Ryan ten Doeschate are bringing anything new to the table.

 

"Batting coach Abhishek Nayar is particularly under the scanner. Gambhir himself has been an accomplished batter. The board has asked the players if Nayar is bringing anything new to the table. Similarly, Doeschate's role is being discussed. His lack of international experience and ability to contribute to enhancing an international cricketer's performance is being questioned," the source added.

 

 

The BCCI is unlikely to take any immediate actions, however, if the team does not do well in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy, the coach and the support staff could get into trouble.
