So far Gill has been a huge letdown. Millions of Indian fans expected him to take the mantle of the next big thing and be the match-winner for us. And he did start off on the right foot in his debut Test series against Aus in Aus in 2020-21. He played a blinder of an innings at Gabba and was the main reason alongside Pant for India to chase 328 in the 4th innings to win our greatest Test series win.

But things have gone downhill since. Gill is going more on the Babar Azam route by filling his boots in bilaterals and making impactless, useless runs. He has failed every single time when the stakes were high. He failed in 2 WTC Finals, was useless in 2023 WC, especially the final, and hasn't done much in this CT either other than score against minnows. Against NZ and in the SF he failed as is his wont. Compare him to Rachin Ravindra who made his debut after Gill and was considered more of an all-rounder and he has scored 5 100s in ICC tourneys! Rachin has become what we hoped Gill would be.

Gill has a great opportunity to set things straight in the CT Final and let's see if he does so. I hope he finally shows up in a big game  What do you folks think? Will he finally deliver on the big stage, or is he destined to be a bilateral bully in the same category as Babar Azam?

Till now gill's all 100s have come against a 2nd string bowling line-up. out of his 8 tons 5 are in Ind, 1 in uae, 1 in sl , 1 in zim.

He still has to do anything of note against a good quality bowling side. Yes he as played half of his matches in Ind and under 10 matches in rest of the venues.

But were would you rate those 100s ??

Exactly. That's why compared him to Babar Azam - all the stats but zero impact.

Gill's 91 won US the game at Gabba.

He failed in the WC final. But saying he is a minnow bully is pushing it. I expect him to do well in the final

He and Jaiswal are the future of Indian top order

I acknowledged it in the OP while mentioning he hasn't done anything since then. There comes a time when you're supposed to step up and perform when it matters. Take away that Gabba knock and Gill doesn't have much, especially in shorter formats.

I think we all need to check our expectations with Gill.

He does have some charismatic shots which looks outrageous, but again hint of movement he is susceptible to lbw or edging behind the wickets. Plus he has shortcomings vs spin as well, which teams these days are well aware of and ready to utilize it.

It will need an extraordinary amount of discipline from him to curb his instincts.

If he can't win us a match in Dubai where the ball is unlikely to do much, what exactly is the point of backing him? May as well get in Jaiswal and Sai Sudarshan to replace him. They're more solid than Gill and will give you a similar SR or better. Why continue to back someone who's only good for flattest of conditions. If that's the case we may as well bring in Abhishek or Ishan Kishan on those flat pattas.

Gill should be able to handle pitches like Dubai. It doesn't have vicious turn as Colombo or green mamba of Eng or NZ and nor does it have bounce of WACA or SA pitches. Batting in PP is the best time to bat in Dubai and if you can't make a contribution there, move out and let someone else do the job.

He stood up in '23 SF though, should have gotten a 100 that day

Iyer was the difference maker that day. Without him we were headed for a 320-330 total and Kiwis would've chased it easily. Iyer's knock made the difference and elevated the total beyond Kiwis.

Hope Gill or any other batter plays such an innings and takes the match away from kiwis in the CT Final

We will see his true potential once Rohit & Kohli retires.

It happens when you have seniors around, youngsters take things easy. Once they aren't then the real player takes off.

Kohli & Rohit too improved big time when Sachin, Sehwag, Yuvraj etc left the big stage due to different reasons.

Kohli had started coming into his own in 2012 when Tendulkar was still around. Rohit took time coz he was pushed up the order in 2013. Gill has been around for some time now and that Gabba knock is 4 years ago now. He hasn't stepped up when he should be hitting his prime.

Look at Jaiswal or Rachin. They both came in after Gill and have overtaken Gill. If Gill wouldn't have been anointed the "Prince" and the next superstar, Jaiswal would've already replaced him in ODIs by now.

Gill hasn't cemented his spot in any format. In Tests he averages around 30. In T20 he can't even get in ahead of Abhishek, Jaiswal and Samson. And in ODIs Jaiswal deserves to be ahead but is in the team coz he's the VC. IMO it's time for him to step up.

his best format is odis as of now, and odis may get obsolete in near-future teams will play more t20is on a tours than odis. and may play odis only when wc is near by

he odes not make a cut in t20i team and his test record is not that good has a lot of tech. issues to be v.good in test

He has to step up in the final. Kohli usually gets out for single digits iin the next game after a good knock in the previous one so we can't have another top order failure considering Fatso's threshold is 20 runs.

Not everyday we are going to recover and win after being 30/3.

Rachin has scored 5 ICC 100s. Future skipper and superstar Gill has to step up now in his strongest format, because anyway in tests/T20s he is an abject failure.

In ODIs if he can't even match the much maligned Shreyas Iyer, what is the point of him?
