I think GT got impacfed the most  as they lost a better keeper and a way better batsman. in Butler.  Jansen  was a loss for punjab.  Bairstow did even better than Rickleton so that kinda worked out well for MI. RCB losing TIm David took away some fire power in the backend. But they still have enough depth to manage that. So not a big impact.

lockie maxi and now Marco. now even Chahal

bowling attack is very poor now

This is why they have to try to shorten the tournament even at the risk of players getting tired. I mean 2 double headers every weekend.  This kills the contest.

Way too much cricket. They should have no more than 60 league matches, and then playoffs.

But have a best-of-3 finals - will be a better way of judging the best team.

Loss of key players completely change the dynamics. In case of GT Buttler is a massive miss.

Buttler obviously. Amazing how GT came close yesterday without Buttler.

I'm not staunch GT supporter..Just pointing out how GT came close without Buttler when I expected one sided affair for MI.

Yes GT played well. Especially Sai and Sundar.

But GT were always well below the asking rate.

At no point did GT have more than a 30% chance of a win.

At 150/2 it definitely seemed more than 30%.

In times, when teams get 50 runs in last 3 overs (GT did that on many occasions esp. in 2022), relying solely on asking rates to judge the closeness of a game is a folly (if you recall how WI hit 4 6s in the 2016 final, and how MSD takes it to the final over w/o worrying about RRR).

Gill did not click and Buttler was missing, but the Wolves still stepped up!  If not for Bumrah (terrific bowling), Wolves could have won (despite playing a bad game in general esp. wayward bowling and catching) :dontknow:

Current format works fine for playoffs. No need for three finals.

League is a test of endurance.

Finals is a test of performance on big stage. Best of three kills the big stage skill

GT clearly impacted by the absence of Butler and Rabada.

They literally lost the match because of their replacements in Mendis and Coetzee

Losing a v.impt player in v.impt match is the biggest loss. There are not many Butller kind of player.

Losing a player in between the league matches as a team you can try out few things one can sort out some things and bridge gaps created by the other player.

Mendis is a decent player but nowhere near an inform buttler.

Not a popular opinion but  Sai's innings though kept GT in run chase he never took the team a head of the game and if one look at his innings the impetus never came.

He scored 80 of 50 balls. Same things would have been said/pointed out about rohit's innings had MI lost the match, it was a match when ever other batter were going at 200 sr.

In the context of the game sai missed that 6th gear which meant some1 else would have to play 20 ball 40 kind of knock.

Sai will have to learn finishing/closing innings. He looked tired yesterday,Sundar's innings had made his work relatively easy still he could not finish it off.

It would  be hard fr an opener to finish up the game so its acceptable if they can not finish the chase or an innings in a t20 game.

But while chasing as a batter which ever position they are playing, where they need to keep the team ahead of the game so that incase if a wkt falls next batter does not have to go from ball 1.

specially when they are chasing an above par score by 8-10 runs against 2 intnl bowlers of v.high quality

gassing out for a batter is normal thing at the end of their innings and specially for batter who are relying on 1s/2s

GT openers lack the ability to utilise power play.  GT often get in false sense of complacency that they are doing well in powerplay.

League match which GT lost to RR.

They were happy scoring 53/0 against RR. When RR batted, RR scored 87/0. A whooping difference of 25 runs. Approximately they were scoring 4 runs less in powerplay.

MI knockout which GT lost

Similarly yesterday MI scored 79 in powerplay. GT were happy with  66.

GT think they are doing well when they score at 9 or 10 rpo. On the same wickets the opponents are scoring many runs more.

They need opening batsmen who can score at sr 200 if not 250 or 275 which other openers do in IPL.
