I have interacted with many Iranian researchers/scientists based in US and Europe. High achievers, and overrepresented in STEM, especially their women. Turkish origin folks also but Iranians more common. Sky is the limit for what they can achieve as a nation with better leadership.

Not to mention Arts. Free them from this region. Sky is limit. Free them from Islam. Universe.

They will remain Muslims. Maybe more chill like Kazakhs but Islam will always be part of their lives, huge part of their culture.

Ofcourse this is a small subsection of their population. Their leadership is not cut from the same cloth.

My general feeling is that the Iranian leadership represented the Iranian people in 1979 when the Islamic revolution took place. They are disconnected and oppressive now.

Not that it justifies an attack on them, but there are binaries here.

there were many parties fighting against the shah ( 4/5 who themselves oppose each other ) , but Khomeini got lucky in the end because he was more popular / consensual candidate

I think it was like

shah vs

Khomeini gang

communists

nationalists ( totally against mullahs )

mujahideen ( hardcore Islamists )

++

Out of all Khomeini got more international support

My sister in law (brother’s wife) is Iranian. (American, but of Iranian ethnicity).
Her entire circle/family is filled with people who are  high achievers. People who put a lot of importance to skill development and education. Much like the Indian diaspora in the US.

Their chess players Parham and Amin Tabatabi , I briefly interacted with at the Fan zone at the chess Olympiad. Very down to earth people.
Ali Reza is also a huge talent and likeable.

It's a bit deeper than that.  Much like the rest of the oil rich Muslim world, Iran was never allowed to democratise in the 50's because of Churchill and Eisenhower .

The interests of the Anglo-Persian oil company were at stake because a deal struck in 1909 under duress was , under Mosaddegh,  never going to remain the same.

I believe the share for Iran was around a 6th of the taxes paid on profit paid in Britain.

Such was the level of exploitation and a democratic government tried to renegotiate it to 50:50 and, failing that, tried nationalising oil.

Then , predictably, you had western agents provoking a civil war through bribes and propaganda like it happened  elsewhere in Asia and Latin America .

Interestingly, Islamists(who are regressive and stupid everywhere ) were heavily opposed to Mosaddegh , who they labelled a communist/militant secular and were at the forefront of ousting him from power and bringing the Shah back to power.

The Iranian people really had no choice by '79.  The Shah was a brutal dictator and a puppet of Western interests and so they turned once again to the only people who could free them from the Shah who were , once again, Islamists.

When you are caught between powerful neo-colonial forces hellbent on stripping you of your resources and regressive religious zealots who are determined to implement an outdated moral/legal system , you really don't have any real choices at all, only Hobson's choices.

Iranian fm going to meet Putin

Iran closing strait of Hormuz

Oil prices to spike

Like I said, China and Russia will get involved. This regional blowout won't happen this year. But Iran won't attack US directly. Israel will be pumelled with support of China forcing US to get dragged in. Once they get dragged in, squeeze will start domestically. July should be horrible month anyway in terms of numbers.

Simpletons who think WW III hasn't started yet. It started 4 years back with Ukraine. First axis of Russia was targetted. Now second one of Iran. Third would be China.

China has more to gain by not joining.

This was planned months in advance. Unfortunately I think India spoiled the show for them. No wonder we just shut shop. No wonder Trump is distracting with nobel peace prize drama. It's a distraction.

So now the pause in Ops Sindoor can end ?

Iranian diplomacy seems gutter level tbh... Absolute no open support whatsoever..

They are looking like Armenia with more land, resources and Oil.

What Russians and Chinks must be wanting is a suicidal land invasion by US..

Absolutely. Hence think they will support Iran to attack Israel and maybe Saudis or oilfield. Hurt the allies and force them to come in.

Tehran will become Cosmopolitan for sure. Never met any Iranian from Tehran who are religious. In fact some are hardcore atheists and that what survey data also suggests.
