Singer and cultural icon from Assam, Zubeen Garg, has passed away at the age of 52 following a tragic scuba diving accident in Singapore.
Zubeen, widely loved across Assam and the Northeast, was in Singapore to attend the North East Festival. The three-day festival, which was scheduled to begin on Friday, was meant to feature Zubeen performing on 20 September.

Zuben was injured during scuba diving in Singapore

Reportedly, Zubeen sustained injuries while scuba diving in Singapore. Singapore police rescued him from the sea and rushed him to a nearby hospital. Despite intensive medical care, doctors could not save him, and he passed away in the intensive care unit.

"It is with deep sadness that we share the news of Zubeen Garg's passing. While scuba diving, he experienced breathing difficulties and was immediately given CPR before being rushed to Singapore General Hospital. Despite efforts to save him, he was declared dead in the ICU around 2.30 pm IST," a statement issued by organisers of the North East Festival said.

His sudden demise has shocked fans, colleagues, and the entire Assamese community, leaving a deep void.

Often referred to as the voice of Assam, Zubeen Garg was more than just a singer. He rose to national fame with his soulful track 'Ya Ali' from the film 'Gangster', which became a chartbuster across India. His other Bollywood hits include 'Dil Tu Hi Bataa' from 'Krrish 3' and 'Jaane Kya Chahe Man' from 'Pyaar Ke Side Effects'. In addition to Hindi, he sang in Assamese, Bengali, Nepali, and several other regional languages, creating a loyal fanbase across diverse audiences.

My memory of him is as a kid listening to his 'remix' of Kishore Da's songs. Never understood why he didnt make it big in Bollywood.

Scuba diving is loaded with risk, dangrous adventure sport. Cause of death isn't specified but decompression sickness is a common risk and painful way to go.

Same here, RIP. Reminds me of the underwater walk I did in Punta Cana with a pressure helmet. Traumatic experience with air pressure in your ears

His voice was more suited for "indi-pop". He had that "auto-music" in his voice which negated the need of instruments.
Anyway, his era was dominated by KK, Shaan, Sonu Nigam. Plus, independent musicians like him who aren't part of camps find it tough anyway.

His wife said that he had episodes of seizures in the past, it seems he had another incident during scuba diving.

The few songs he sung became chartbusters. Would have expected him to get more chances. Definitely better than current singers
