Shubman Gill is set to be appointed India's new ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, and will lead the side in the three-match series in Australia starting on October 19. Rohit has been picked in the squad as a batter, and along with Virat Kohli, is set to represent India again for the first time since the Champions Trophy in March.

Gill, 26, now holds formal leadership roles in all three formats as Test and ODI captain and vice-captain of the T20I team.

Rohit, 38, was India's full-time ODI captain from December 2021. Overall, he led India in 56 ODIs, winning 42, losing 12, with one tie and another no-result. He led India to the 2018 Asia Cup title as stand-in captain, and then to the 2023 Asia Cup title as full-time captain. Under his leadership, India made the finals of the 2023 ODI World Cup. His tenure culminated in India winning the 2025 Champions Trophy in March.

With Rohit and Kohli both retired from Tests and T20Is, the upcoming ODI series in Australia will be their first international appearance in more than seven months. After the three ODIs in Australia, their next opportunities to play for India are in the three-ODI home series against South Africa in November-December and against New Zealand in January.

Gill rewarded for being dog **** in the CT?

2(7) against NZ in group stage

8(11) against Aus in SF

31(50) against NZ in final while Rohit was going at 100+SR

Even his 40 odd against Pak was the 3rd best knock by an Indian that night, behind Kohli's 100 and Iyer's 60.

Gill has never showed up in big tournaments or games except that one time in 23 SF. 10% success rate.

Iyer, KL, Axar, Hardik all played big roles in our CT win, at various times each of these guys stepped up in high pressure situations...traits of leaders. While Gill was chilling and messing up at the easiest spot.

BCCI will soon make Gill captain in T20, basically Rahane of the format without 1/10th the leadership qualities of Rahane.

Kohli when he was made captain in all formats had a huge body of work including clutch knocks. Gill has nothing to show in comparison, easily the most pampered cricketer in Indian cricket history.

3 formats, 3 captains is the way to go. Too much power in the hands of one will have a corrupting influence.

And Gill has shown in the past (Zim T20I series last year) that if given captaincy role, he will look out only for his interests, even if it means throwing his 'BFF' Abhishek Sharma under the bus.

3 captains will be crazy but 2 captains , one for test and 1 for both Odi and T20 wd have been great.

Iyer is not playing in test. So it wd hv been better to make him captain for odi and later in t20s with Sky ageing and out of form .

Why crazy? With the way formats are diverging, getting specialized, many countries will treat these 3 formats as 3 different sports.

Teams are out. T20 is full strength. ODIs just no Bumrah, Siraj back. Seems Jadeja is done for in ODIs.

No Jaiswal in T20Is :wall:

Anyway he will carry drinks in the ODIs as Gill, Ro, Ko, Shreyas take top 4.

Also moved on from Jadeja in ODIs. Sundar will take his slot.

Also won't be as effective in SA. India might play both NKR/Pandya in 2027 with one of Axar/Sundar as spin all rounder. Bowlers will be Kuldeep, Bumrah and one of Siraj/Prasidh/Arsh/Rana
