In our 94 year test match history, among retired batsmen with 3000+ test runs, ONLY 7 of them average more than 44. nevada and BacktoCricaddict 2

Pant on other hand has never sniffed 50 avg.So Pant being WK is his strength plus question is not about Pant's batting spot. It is about bits and piece player like Jurel playing as a batsman when better options are there.

But there is no reason to denigrate Pant's abilities and contributions to make that case. He is in rarified territory as a pure batter already, regardless of who bats at 6. bowl_out 1
vvvslaxman Posted August 15 Posted August 15 If they use the same yardstick both shoudln't be playing. But sarfraz has lesser rope in comparison. Sarfraz has 3 fifties 1 century in 11 innings. Jurel has 1 fifty and 1 century in 16 innings. BacktoCricaddict 1

I never denigrated Pant's ability. .He is best WK batsman after Adam Gilchrist. But IMO he would be a bigger weapon at number 6.I still feel he has a role in odis too he is far better option than meek KL Rahul. His 125 in deciding odi is England is still best odi 100 hundred by Indian batsmen in England. He scored a century in England against England A.But after that he was continuously ignored. Jurel is now playing as a specialist batsman as Pant is the wicket keeper batsman. He scored 92. In the same innings, Karun Nair scored a double hundred. And I was against even Nair's inclusion I don't agree with Jurel playing as a pure batsman. But I think he did well on the India A tour of SL and they've just backed him.

On our Australia 2024-25 tour, during the red ball practice matches, both Indians and Australians were pretty impressed with Jurel's technique on quick, bouncy seaming pitches. This, coupled with his high FC average of 55 and highest of 249, and clean hitting against top pacers in the IPL, was why they started backing him. And then he did well for India A. It's quite possible that he may fail at test level due to temperament issues. Happens to more than half the young batters introduced. T20 bad habits play a part too these days. Bur there was and is definitely some merit in giving him a go. Edited August 15 by express bowling
Lord Posted August 15 Posted August 15 I hope he keeps wickets now. Clearly better keeper than Pant Chaos 1

test fan Posted August 16 Posted August 16 When the two of them play together, he performs better than Pant in Tests.
putrevus Posted August 16 Posted August 16 (edited) He is very suspect against spin bowling , was dropped at 29 scored some freebies against wayward Kumara. He came to bat when India was in such a strong position. If he is best batting talent India has then god save this team. Edited August 16 by putrevus

He just gifts his wickets. But despite playing percentage, conventional cricket Jurel is not exactly steting the stage on fire. You gotta score more 100s. He is a decent batsman. But decent enough to pip every single specialist batsman in India? Not sure. Smaran,Yash thakur, Sarfraz have done very well for their side.
Texan Posted August 16 Posted August 16 Jurel averages 13 after 5 Tests when he is not the designated wicket-keeper. This is after his 50 in current innings. Clearly he is not cut out as a pure batsman alone. He is a good backup keeper option. Why would one play a keeper as a specialist batsman when you already have a specialist batsman in the squad, Sarfaraz who could have taken his place?

Lol ball was gripping a lot more when he came to bat as it was new ball.. and dropped chance wasn't even a chance, he slashed a cut shot which no one can realistically take at such close quarter. Second, I don't have any personal agenda against him.So if he scores which I doubt he will and becomes good I will be happy to be proven wrong. He scored 50 not 150.Those are not clutch runs.Even guy like Siraj scored in double digits.

Really liked Jurel's composure as a batsman today. Batting was more difficult, many balls were turning 4 deg and we scored 172 for 7 today. Jurel looked the most assured and played strokes freely. 51 out of 172 was good. Don't know how that was a catch ! It was a fierce cut which hit the slip fielder on the chest. Jurel can't play on turning tracks as well as we saw in the Tests vs SA. I don't have a problem with him as a backup keeper. He seems like a competent option for that. He is just not specialist batsman material from what we have seen so far.

He even fields at Short leg and have taken some blinders whenever Pant keeps. express bowling 1
