The period from 1994 (after Blitz in NZ) to 1998 was his golden period and like you mentioned he could get down the track to bowlers like Ian Bishop & smack them over their head. The tragedy with Indian team during that time was they played very few test matches (which meant he almost played same tests as say Ponting or Kallis by 2005 ) and his Test record during that period could have been phenomenal instead being just good. People also forget that Sachin were part of team at that time which had a very mediocre bowling attack which meant being in defensive mode for most of the times. Post 1999 he had flashes of brilliance (WC 2003 ) but nothing close to 1998 period and he became a more accumulator of runs than a destructive batsman that world feared.

Sony six was retelecasting the entire final & the knockout match against Aus of cococola cup 1997-98 .. It was a joy to listen to Tony Greig's commentary with Sachin's incredible batting. He was far ahead of his contemporaries. Back to back centuries against that reverse swinging old ball  

 

ps: What a shitty umpire Javed Akthar was ... Just watch Sachin's lbw dismissal in the final

Sachin has taken on McGrath many times one which I remember was wc 96 and ct in Dhaka or somewhere where we knock them out in very first match. Mcgrath has better number against Tendulkar but sachin also had his numbers against him.

McGrath didn't play that Dhaka match, it was a 3rd rate Aussies attack @Laaloo
