Priya (22) who was unable to bear the mental agony of her husband Ramesh (23) for more than 16 months finally approached the police. Police said she got married in March last year and her nightmare began the same day as her husband demanded immediate handing over of seven sovereigns of gold ornaments and Rs five lakh cash, saying he would not have any physical contact with her till such time. Her parents had agreed to give 20 sovereigns of gold to Ramesh, who works in a goldsmith outlet, but could give only 13 sovereigns on day of the marriage, they said. Based on the complaint, Ramesh was arrested and a hunt is on for his parents who were part of the torture, police said. :hmmm:

Guy will not even get bail immediately, 15+ days judicial custody for husband minimum. He will never be able to remarry again. New stringent laws like share in husbands property will curb such menace. Go Priya, you deserve happiness.

Is even a false allegation by a wife enough to arrest the husband without any prior investigation ? Seems like the Word of a woman is assumed as an undisputed truth right from the start.

That is correct. In domestic violence laws, including dowry laws, the woman's word is enough. And it's not entirely baseless. What evidence can a poor housewife in an Indian middle class family provide that her in-laws or her husband is demanding dowry or mistreating her? If she resolves and approaches police, that itself is a brave step for her. If we keep asking for evidence, means we are waiting till she can show physical bruises or broken limbs? There can be many kinds of torture that does not leave evidence - from verbal abuse of simple mistreatment like a house maid or even taunts (favorite form of abuse for Indians). How will a woman produce proof of that?
