Ready to open innings in all three formats: Rohit Sharma

New Delhi: After guiding Mumbai Indians to their second Champions League T20 title, skipper Rohit Sharma said he is ready to open innings in all three formats of the game and that he has been waiting for the opportunity for the last six years. "Modern cricket is such that you cannot lock your place. I am ready for last six years to play in all three formats. Hopefully, I will get an opportunity soon," Sharma said at the post-match press conference after Mumbai Indians beat Rajasthan Royals by 33 runs in the final of the CLT20 here last night. "I am waiting for the Test cap and hopefully I'll get it soon. I am waiting for the right time and opportunity," he said. A freak injury just before the Nagpur Test in 2010 had delayed his Test debut but with the West Indies tour round the corner, Sharma would be hoping to finally get to play the traditional format. In February 2010, Sharma was set to make his Test debut against South Africa but he injured himself while playing football in the warm-up on the first morning of the match. He was also part of the squad for the third Test at home against the West Indies in November 2011 and the four-Test Australia series in 2011-12 but could not make the playing XI. Sharma capped off an impressive T20 season as a skipper by securing second trophy in a year after winning the Indian Premier League season 6 in May and the Mumbai player admitted there were a lot of expectations from them. "It wasn't easy for us. There were a lot of expectations and I think we held our nerve well. We showed a lot of character in the tournament," he said. Sharma said he was never worried about the form of off-spinner Harbhajan Singh and called him a "great match winner" for the team. Harbhajan took three wickets in an over during his haul of 4 for 32 to derail Royals' chase of 203-run target at the Feroze Shah Kotla stadium. I wouldn't be surprised, if he succeeds as opener in test.....I would have him any day of the week over Murali........Murali just has so many holes in his technique.....

As much as Murali's technique is weak his last test series performance will not be ignored by selectors. He will be allowed to fail before we move on to other options. Will that option be Rohit? I doubt it. Rohit should not make the mistake that Laxman did early in his career. He accepted the job of opening only to realize he just was not good against new ball.

Good decision. Competition for batting spots in India have *never* been more tightly contested and unless you have made an insurmoutable case for a specific place, which Rohit has not, it's wise to take whatever is on offer. Sehwag did precisely this a decade ago and became a phenom.

we don't seem to have better options right now with Gambhir having totally lost his touch right now. there are younger players challenging the spot. While the indian young talent is overflowing int he middle order some of them like baba and zol may be better off trying off at opening spot

Zol has actually been an opener for Mahrashtra U16 and U19 sides.

^ in the ODIs. Zol is not an opener though. Murali vijay should be allowed to fail. which means we need to take him to SA. (if that series happens) As far as T20s go. Rohit has opened before and failed in the world cup 2009. Not something i would endorse. In the ODIs he has the runs. But needs to improve his strike rate.

Why that is not his position? When he has opened whole his life. He has actually been an opener.
