Unless Bumrah is carrying a niggle, this series has raised serious questions about his longevity in tests.

In 3 out of the 4 innings in this series, Bumrah has looked tired and is not running in well.

Half the time he is just putting the ball there at 132 to 140 k. Apart from the 1st test 1st innings, his % of deliveries above 142 k has been really low.

He hasn't bowled even a single bouncer in this test and no cracking yorker either.

I am worried.

P.S .. It is difficult to advice a legend like Bumrah, who knows way more about fast bowling than I ever will, but I wonder whether some strength and conditioning training at the NCA would help. Miss the 1st NZ test if need be.

This kind of lack of energy won't help in Australia.

Bumrah is ageing

Bumrah is resting more than he is playing.

Plays only test matches and ICC tournaments. And we play just 7 of 8 tests per year on an average.

That should not be too taxing for an international level pacer.

Hopefully, but Bumrah's action does take a toll on his body.
With such a negligible runup and a slingshot action, the muscles will have higher amount of wear and tear once he ages around 33-34.

Either this, or maybe he is preserving himself for Australia series.
Let's face it, Bumrah knows he is the one pacer whom everyone will look at in Australia (high chances Shami will miss the bus).
Siraj is Siraj and Akashdeep, though an honest trier, can't be relied on to win sessions day in and day out. Spinners will just play a supporting role.

By chance, if we lose Bumrah as well, then the dangerous duo of Avesh-Mukesh will creep in through the backdoor courtesy of "experience".
Hence, maybe he is taking it easy and just doing the bare minimum, coz spinners will manage the things here.

That's why preparing in advance for the rainy days is the way to go, we wasted much time and games on the above mentioned dangerous-duo. Not sure if our selectors were expecting them to become like Morkel and Philander.

the test seemed sacrificed to rain gods..may be thats why Boom wasnt too serious about it and preserving him..however now the batters have provided us sniff..he should go for full throttle..

if KL somehow would hv caught Shadman in slips..things wud hv been more interesting..the Bang Boys bat deep..now till 9th wkts as we got 2nd wkt of night watchman..they will eat up the overs..bounce them..york them..terrorize them..get them out in 50 overs..

Bumrah doesn't have a slingshot action. It's a simple action like Naseem Shah, just that arm is straight. For slingshot action, bowling arms needs to go low, not high.

The way his arm bends backwards courtesy of hyperextension and then thrusts the ball, it's remniscent of a slingshot.

From what i saw Bumrah wasnt as sharp as usual. But one must remember that these are pretty humid conditions. Even Kohli seemed to be struggling with his fitness while batting.
And bowling out Bangladesh for 233 on this wicket was quite spectacular. All of Bumrah's wickets were off great deliveries. deserves credit for that.

A likelier explanation is motivation. This is the Bangladeshs at home afterall. A side against whom even our C-grade team will win in 4 days.

Hell, we literally did a better than T20 run rate against them in TESTS and scored the fastest team 50 in test cricket HISTORY.

So i think what is likely,is like several greats of the game against total minnows, he simply isnt motivated enough. Which happens. Shane warne for eg, averaged 28-29 vs bangladesh, while averging 25 over his whole career. McGrath also averaged 2-3 points higher against Bangladesh than his career average.

Seems that way before Bd won the series against Pak there were news that Bhumrah would not play this series and even if he plays then it would be 1 off game.

Plus their has been rain the results would not have been in their minds and ground would still be soggy not that firm and he would be avoiding any injury at this point.

Shami is already doubtful for bgt Ind TM would not want to risk bhumrah

That's a plausible explanation. Only caveat being that, in the era of WTC, even these tests have become important. Which is why we batted like mad yesterday. SL is breathing down our neck in the WTC points table. This team in desperate to win this test.

Lot of people talking about Bumrah not going full throttle, and that that would mean it could be a niggle, or he is getting old n bla bla n bla...

When your board doesn't give importance to real cricket and makes a top tier bowler play in a meaningless test which poses no challenge for a champion, they would lose interest. You do that to Bumrah a few more times, and you are totally going to kill his motivation and his talent. There are ways to kill a real talent, and this is one.

Neither has he lost pace, nor is he ageing. He just needs proper motivation and challenge. And also capable bowling partners who could bowl in the 150's in overseas tours.

Yes, but when you have players of Bumrah/McGrath/Warne capability playing against teams like Bangla, they can go on 3rd gear and still carry their weight in the game. Its not like McWarne were like 'oh bangladesh, we dont care if we win or lose' they damn well wanted to win as much as against anyone, just that they knew/know that the team will STILL win if they bring their C game against these hopeless teams.

Fair enough.
