Very surprised by the naivete of some of the posts here. Most communities tend to live amongst themselves, members of the same flock et al. And the higher up you go the socio-economic ladder, the more blatant the discrimination/ insulated style of life. Would you be surprised if a well off but relatively obscure business person is not sold a flat in a society full of film stars? Every group wants to be exclusive, especially when they are slightly better off financially or socially than others ( or at least they perceive themselves to be better off) and lead their life their own way. This is not a Muslim only thing. This stuff happens everywhere. The slums are the probably the only places in urban India where you do not have these fake and exclusive social walls.
This isn't an economic class divide which people are talking about. Here's what is happening - a Muslim who is from the same economic strata is actively denied apartments on the basis of religion. We all understand birds of a feather, flocked together but people are not monolithic and different birds have different feathers. FYI, the likes of Dileep Kumar, Emran Hashmi and TV actor Amir Ali have also been denied flats because they were Muslim.

Imran Hashmi case was not one of religioun based discrimination at all. There are Muslims in that society where he was panning to get a flat. It was that people in that society were dead against the 'hep' lifestyle and the late night parties etc that having a film star in their midst would bring. It was never religious discrimination to begin with, it was the society not willing to let in people from showbiz. They later denied a VJ flat there too, though she was willing to pay top dollar for it. The religious discrimination angle was floated to the media at the behest of Imran Hashmi's lawyer, which was then withdrawn soon. There was never any strong legal case to begin with, just mudslinging. How do I know all of this? One of my ex-colleagues was a junior at that firm which handled this case. I don't know about the Amir Ali case. DM, I do not deny that there is religion based discrimination wrt accommodation. That is an evil. Muslims are probably more likely to be a victim of this kind of discrimination. But having societies for select communities is how things are. That isn't necessarily a bad thing. It is, I would argue, an unalienable right of the people/community.

The whole point of a successful country is assimilation of various religions and cultures in to diverse multicultural society this is like going back stone age. This should not be allowed and also renting the places to Muslim communities should be encouraged.
There is a Fali Nariman comment, which I treasure that I'd like to share with you. When he was asked about the difference between America and India, he replied " America is the melting pot of cultures, and India is the salad bowl. The salad doesn't taste as well if you were to remove a few ingredients " We've always been the salad bowl.

Something similar from america, stl_area-724x1024.jpg Racial Segregation in the St. Louis Metropolitan Region
This is the type of environment which lead to problems between different communities and riots because they become segregated and live in their own different world and they perceive others as a threat to their way of life because they are increasingly alienated from others. I would say not just muslims but all communities in India should not live in an insular, closed environment where they might struggle to learn to co-exist with other people and learn to assimilate into the larger society and respect other cultures. A bunch of rich people living separately from other sections of society is quite different from religious groups forming ghetto type societies. For instance, old city area in Hyderabad has been known over the years for people affiliated with terrorists groups. A combination of poverty, unemployment, isolation, lack of assimilation, brainwashing causes some of the youngsters to get influenced by anti social elements. We don't need more situations like these in other parts of the country.

There is nothing called diverse multicultural society. Take out the map of world, and you will see that a particular sect of certain religion has either assimilated, or assimilating. And if in minority they brand you phobic

It sets a dangerous precedent.

yes.. one of our roommate was a muslim and he got married some 3 or 4 years back.. when he started looking for a flat by himself every time the owners give some reasons to reject him.. then we approached a broker and he told owners wont prefer muslims mainly bcoz of religious reasons and other reason being the size of the muslim family..
More than all these is the meat issue.

yeah .. still most hindus dont take beef and maybe they dont like to rent it to muslims.. in my experience rarely i had seen a hindu mallu not taking beef

on the other hand, a specific community apartment/colony could also be an easy target in times of riots, etc. The community probably thinks they're safe together. It all depends on the perspective.

Kerala can't be counted as typical india. it's a different basket in there. Muslims ARE the dominant group here, and don't have the "need" to be included

I have had problems getting some flats in Bangalore of all places (around 10 years ago) because the owners were only letting to vegetarians. I often wondered, since rent is something they are earning, is there any kind of discrimination laws in India which can be used

^ But you didn't work for them. I would consider it discriminatory if you want to employ a maid belonging to a particular caste at your house. But if a house owner doesn't like the idea of non-veg being consumed at his house, well that's his house and he can pick his tenants, quirky though his conditions may be. Say someone wants to rent his house out only to teetotalers, you won't call that discriminatory, will you?

There was a small and old 2-3 storied house where an extended Muslim family was living in, in the area where my parents bought a house in Hyderabad....The area is a predominantly Hindu area obviously....I am generalising Hindu area because in Hyderabad, old city is obviously the hub for Muslims but AGAIN the area does have other communities but anyways coming to the point i am trying to make, During Bakrid they would cut/Halal (or whatever the process is called) the goat outside and the drain outside would be filled with Goat blood, now obviously there are a lot of Hindus in and around the area who eat meat where as my parents are strict vegetarians,However Veggie or Non-Veggie, it is very awkward to be around such a ceremony because it is not part of our custom and I am sure it was the same way for them as well and sure they must have felt out of place. The fact is no one complained or had a problem with this and rightfully so but it was surely inconvenient for them and awkward for the rest. I am not criticisng their custom here,I am sure they felt awkward during Ganesh Festival etc with all those loud speakers etc. Now from what I hear the main head of that muslim family and all his brothers are very nice people,I have seen him many times and he always greets you with a smile and seems like a genuine nice guy.... but then one day they sold out their property and moved out to old city to be closer with their community. I am not a proponent of 2 Nation Theory here lol Obviously hindus,Muslims and Christians can co-exist and they have for so many years......but there are some customs which will always be out of place when you are the minority. Ghettoization is not limited to Muslims alone,You will see For Eg; Brahman Agraharanms,Marwari Communities,SIndhi colonies,Current or Retired-army Officers ,Christians, people from a particular state etc in such Urban ghettos

But many such people are hypocrites. I'll talk about my own community who are strictly vegetarian but own many convenience stores, restaurants where they sell meat. It's stupid that you would sell a product for personal profit but then you will curse anyone or discriminate against someone who does consume it. On the surface, there's nothing illegal about it, but this is not a healthy mindset for anyone living in 21st century. All this does is keep pulling India back in the times of pre-British era.

Actually I will think that is discriminatory. On the one hand as you say, it is his house, but on the other he is earning from the house
