First spelling bee nerd that I wanted to cheer for (rest of them usually seem like they have been dragged there by their overbearing parents).

There were just three finalists left on the stage then — Vanya Shivashankar, Gokul Venkatachalam and Cole Shafer-Ray. Shafer-Ray was who the tweeter was referring to. One tweeter declared Cole “the great white hope”. Shivashankar and Venkatachalam went on to win, cementing the hold Indian-Americans have gained over the Scripps Spelling Bee, which has triggered an ugly racial backlash. You have to love vocabulary, origin of words, pronunciations, etc. Not every kid wants to play outside wasting their time. A lot of times the correct answers are guessed from language of origin and how similar words are pronounced. This takes a lot of knowledge, dedication and hard work. If you are not exposed to it, it is hard to appreciate it.

I guarantee you, you will suck. That is why you have not participated in these competitions, let alone win.
