I think Dhoni should retire

Because "fans" don't deserve him. One failure while chasing even when he wasn't fit and other batsmen around him except Rohit crumbled, he took us one hit away but unfortunately could not finish it. That's all it took for "fans" to demand his retirement. So why should the same "fans" today celebrate this victory when if not for Dhoni, we would have lost having 25 overs to spare?

People questioned whether he can bat anymore. Suggestions were to bring in A team players to replace him : He produced one of the best ODI knocks of recent times.

People questioned Axar's selection over Mishra calling Axar another one of Dhoni's special friend, crony etc etc. Axar's bowling figures : 10-0-39-3. People questioned Mohit Sharma's selection : he took AB De Villiers' wicket.

By this standard, dhoni will play until his daughter gets married cuz he can do no wrong. There can never be anyone to replace him cuz the thought of anyone doing better than him is just blasphemous. Op himself was always criticizing sachin bhakts for the same reason yet today he is doing the same Bhakti for someone else. He had a good match today, give credit to him for that but retirement should be around the corner looking at the next World Cup. It's not fair to his replacement if he doesn't get enough adequate matches under the belt. If you can't handle that fact, it's not anyone else's problem

Absolute nonsense. He is just 34 years old and performing well...Why should he retire? The next world cup is 4 years away...There is no reason for him to leave the team now when we are still figuring out the right combination. The hatred for Dhoni has reached phenomenal heights like no other player in the past. A performing player who is not that old is being asked to retire because we need to prepare for a tournament 4 years from now?

how is 34 not old? He'll be 38 by the next World Cup. If you analyzed his hitting power, it's gone for the most part. He either mistimes or ends up placing ball in inner circle.  Today was the first time he actually looked capable of hitting anything. All that's gonna happen is a further regression with age. He can play at 4 as an accumulator for awhile. Time will tell if that position is tenable as well.

Yes they have to retire but not when they don't have to because some people hate them. No other country fans bring down their greats as much as Indian fans do...Sachin was not spared why would Dhoni. Dhoni was criticized to supporting certain players and those players have now become the most important members of the squad.

The test team cannot do without Ashwin and Vijay (Dhoni and Srikanth administration was criticized for backing them calling them quota picks). Now the same fans are shaking in their boots with the prospect of both of them missing the first test.

He was criticized for backing Rohit in ODI, now Rohit becomes India's most important top order batsman in shorter format.

He backed Jadeja, he was for better part of 2 years was India's best all-rounder/spinner in all formats. Now people are calling him back into the X1. He knew what he was doing and backed the right players.

Abey? You're talking as if I just created a random thread and today's match didn't happen. Others sitting outside the team doing better than him sounds blasphemous hence the thread. It maybe possible few years later.

Which match did Sachin win us during that phase when I was one of those wanting him to retire?

Dropping Mishra and playing Darty was criminal and almost cost us the match until the umpire intervened.

I think Bhajji was quite clearly a replacement for Ashwin.

@FischerTal

If you are fit and performing there is no reason for you to retire. Why should he? He averages 58 in last 3 years with SR of 91 with over 2200 runs. Now tell me why should he retire when we had players like Misbah playing till 40 before calling it a day. Dhoni for sure will retire in 2 years. As a great of the game we should at least give him that much respect. Your personal like and dislikes means nothing in the larger scheme of things.

He backed Jadeja and Jadeja produced results once every 10 matches. When you keep backing the same retreads every time, they are bound to come up with good performances here and there.

naturally it sounds blasphemous when you make someone into a demigod. Replacements should be tried at the finisher position because it's a young mans job.

Don't let the ODI 200 against Saffers hit your ass on the way out...Or the big daddy 100 chasing against aussies when no-one else in the team stood up...

Jadeja was extremely consistent till for 2 full years. please look at the stats if you want to. He was India's best spinner even ahead of Ashwin for those two years.

Those happened in 2009/10. No one in their right minds could question him during that phase.

We are taking about 2012/13 when he has clearly struggling across formats.

By stats even dhoni played very well. But we all know the story. He would tuk tuk his way when we needed boundaries, stay not out till the end and then hit boundaries after the match is over. Same way Jadeja feasted and took wickets after damage was already done and hit hitting prowess was nothing to write home about. Can only remember one match winning knock otherwise he would always choke.
