Nearing his best, Jaydev Unadkat sets sights on bigger things

With 20 wickets in the two knock-out games that Saurashtra have played in the 2015-16 Ranji Trophy season, Jaydev Unadkat's stocks have certainly risen. While Ravindra Jadeja did most of the damage in the league stage with spin-friendly conditions assisting him, the left-arm pacer has taken over in grand style, starring in Saurashtra's two back-to-back victories in the quarters and semis, picking up a hat-trick of five-wicket hauls in the process.

The search for a quality left-arm seamer post the retirement of Zaheer Khan is still an ongoing one, but Unadkat, with his consistent performances this season, has put his hands up. "I'll be looking forward to doing that as soon as possible. The main thing I need to do for that is to make sure that I achieve the short-term goals that I have set for myself. If the process is right, the things are bound to happen, if not now then a bit later," says the pacer with confidence in a chat with Cricbuzz.

Another issue that has plagued the Indian quicks in the past is that they have struggled to sustain their pace over longer periods, while some haven't been able to put in those extra yards required to give them the edge over others. Unadkat, who has found a lot of zip in the recent past, attributes it to two key factors.

"It definitely has to do with my overall strength," says Unadkat when asked about the extra yards he has been managing of late. "I've put on some muscles in the last couple of years, that's for sure. That's probably the important thing that is helping me to gain those extra yards of pace. 

Only 24 and in the form of his life, things have been on an upswing for the Porbandar-born lad, who recently earned himself a Rs 1.6 Crore contract with Kolkata Knight Riders. With loads of cricket left in him, he'd prefer to build from strength to strength, and if it all goes through swimmingly, another intelligent left-armer may soon be part of the Indian set-up again, this time, with experience, self-belief and some muscles to aid him.

Looking forward to see him in Team.India. Those who are consistent in domestic tournament should be rewarded with a place in the squad.

I hope he works hard on strength aspect in the gym regularly along with a lot of bowling in the nets to sustain pace even if it is 135, sustaining that is important.  He is a tall left armer and that is an advantage even if pace is not 140 plus.

Yes, he should not lose steam in his later spells like Sran or Pankaj Singh.

A tall  bowler, hitting the deck hard and getting bounce at 135 k and getting seam and swing...can be a handful.

i am greatly interested in seeing how Chama Milind has progressed from the U19 level.

He was one of the rare bowlers who was combining good pace with consistent movement and bowling in good areas too.

India need to create sporting tracks which initially will support pacers n then after a 50 overs will be a batting track n then take some turn n later reverse, also then pacers n spinners will improve all-round same for batters

India needs to introduce n work with wrist spinners, K Yadav should be playing by now, S Gopal, Rahul Sharma, S Quadri ,Y Chahal should be looked at also , Nathu, Shukla,  Ankit Rajpoot, Aniket , Suyal, Avesh, K Ahmed, Sran , C Milind, Warrier should be worked with

This guy is a joke, gets a chance to play n bowls at 125 K, unless he has a brain n heart transplant he is useless, far below INT class,n the pace that he so called reached 135 is his effort ball, same like MOHIT whois faster, he is useless

He has been picking lots of wickets at the domestic level, so he will get his chance soon. But I feel he should atleast increase his pace by 5K's. Right now he is bowling 130-135K with a few effort balls at around138K. If he can bowl at 135-140K that will be enough I guess. But he needs to work on increasing his strength and stamina so that he can sustain that pace.

He has lots of things in his favour. He has left armers advantage, is pretty accurate. good bounce coz of his height and can move the ball both ways. This is rare for indian standards. So we definitely need to invest in him. Only factor that is lacking is consistent pace which can be improved to an extent just by improving strength. He has already worked on his strength and improved pace by around 3-4 kphs. unfortunately that is still not good enough for intl cricket. When I look at him there is still a lot of scope for improvement in strength. So there is defenite hope that he can consistently hit 135 in around 1 or 2 years if he continues with his current strength improvement related workouts.

lets see how he performs in the finals....I kinda doubt his pace and his capability.
