At this point in time, you have to say Younis is a better batsman outside the subcontinent but it looks like Ashwin will overtake him soon in that regard.

I know you're probably joking, but why exclude Zimbabwe and not the West Indies? 

 

With that change, Ashwin averages 29 while Younis averages 42. Younis used to be decent outside Asia, but now since he is in the 40s, he is laughably bad against pace. Ashwin is a good batsman, but so far he only has some good innings in the West Indies and England. He is a foul weather and gritty batsman, but he needs to start scoring some soft runs and be more consistent. Although he is probably the third best spin bowling allrounder from Asia already, behind Mankad and Hanif's brother.

he actually gave a preview into his mind set in a recent interview. says that when he comes in at 8 he is thinking about getting some extra runs and plays a few shots but when playing at 6 he is trying to build an innings. May be we will see some good performances now that he is playing up the order.

I think being objective. I feel Ash has a lot more to give with the bat in the years to come. Its unfair to compare averages. Younis is batting at 3-4 and Ashwin is batting at 6-8. Different positions and different responsibilities. 

 

The plus for Younis is that he is in a position to build innings. The negative is that he has to face many times the new ball when its seaming or swinging.  In case of Ash, batting at 6-8 means potentially plenty of not outs. But also as we saw yesterday having to throw his bat around and getting out when in search for quick runs. Batting at 6 imo is going to be hard for Ash to break the 40 average mark with the bat.

 

Ash averaging 35 home and away through his test career with the bat IMO would make him more valuable as a player than Younis Khan. The big question is Ash has been given a porminance at 6. Can he sustain that on tours of SA, England and Aus home and away. If he can then I can certainly put him down as the premium allrounder of his era. Cant think of many when the sort of stats Ash has at the moment in test cricket. Somebody like Moeen is part of the England team as an allrounder averages 40 plus with the ball and about the same as Ash with the bat. I can see Moeen boosting his batting average but I can also see his bowling falling away.

I just saw somewhere else that he averages 40 now. That average will take a big hit after Aus tour.
