Huge protests in Karnataka after modified court order on Cauvery waterSupreme Court orders Karnataka to release less water, but for more daysKarnataka Chief Minister writes to Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa

Bengaluru: Arson and vandalism was seen on the streets of Bengaluru and on a highway to Mysuru on Monday as anger boiled over on a Supreme Court order that meant that Karnataka would have to release more water from the river Cauvery to neighbor Tamil Nadu.

Here are 10 developments in the story:

Mobs burnt Tamil Nadu-registered trucks and buses on the roads and vandalized shops in the IT hub. An NDTV team saw about two dozen buses being set on fire at a bus depot around 17 km from Bengaluru. "We will give blood but not Cauvery," screamed slogan shouting protesters.

The state's Congress government and the police appeared to be severely challenged by the scale of protests and the damage to public property.  Images showed young men turning over an Innova car and wrecking it using rods, and throwing stones at shops. The Supreme Court had earlier said on protests in Karnataka: "Citizens cannot become a law unto themselves."

In the evening, large gatherings were banned in Bengaluru as a precaution. Most schools and colleges and some offices were closed early and metro services were briefly stopped.

The court had this morning modified an earlier order and said Karnataka has to release less water to Tamil Nadu, but for five more days. Karnataka, which will end up giving more water, urged a review but the court refused.

Thousands of policemen, including those in riot gear, spread out across the city to check violence. Karnataka stopped buses from heading to Tamil Nadu and police jeeps were positioned along the border to warn vehicles against entering that state.

Protests were also seen in Tamil Nadu. The New Woodlands hotel in Chennai, owned by a Karnataka company, was vandalized by a fringe group that allegedly also threw a petrol bomb and left pamphlets warning of retaliation if Tamils were targeted in Karnataka. Four of 10 attackers have been arrested. Five tourist vehicles from Karnataka, including two buses, were damaged by protesters in Rameswaram in southern Tamil Nadu.

Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, in a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart Jayalalithaa, urged her to take action against those involved in violence against Kannada speaking people in her state. He also said the attack on a young man in Bengaluru was "blown out of proportion".

The man - reported to be Tamil - was attacked and humiliated in Bengaluru on Saturday by a group allegedly over his comments on social media on the Cauvery dispute. In a video of the attack that went viral, the engineering student was slapped and kicked by the men. The police suspect he was attacked after his post on Facebook mocking Kannada actors was widely circulated.

Trouble resurfaced in thedecades-old dispute over the Cauvery river, which flows through Karnataka into Tamil Nadu, after the Supreme Court last week asked Karnataka to release 15,000 cusecs of water to its neighbour.

Last week, the highway between Bengaluru and Mysuru was blocked by protesters at Mandya, the volatile heartland of the Cauvery basin. Bengaluru was completely paralysed because of a shutdown called by protesters on Friday.

Situation is really looking scary at the moment . Bengaluru police has announced Section 144 order from 5 pm today. And half an hour back 30-40 TN registered buses were set at a Bus Depot near Bengaluru by a mob.

To put in perspective of the difficulty facing the Bengaluru police there are around 30 lakh Tamil people living in Bengaluru .

I am not aware of the history behind the issue, which state is being affected the most, what are the alternate water sources for TN if water is not coming from Karnataka, if both states are suffering equally, why not allow some water to pass to TN, etc. .... However, the key question is whether the water shortage is due to improper infrastructure (and/or environment abuse) where huge amount of water is wasted leading to the shortage

HM of Karnataka admits they were blindsided by the violence.

LOP Kharge states that they are having a meeting tomorrow to deal with the situation.

Bangalore image is going down the drain because of all this. Its insane, although the SC verdit is based on basin size, the true issue is. In Mandya many farmers spent for their crops say like 15k for a particular field to sow, expecting water from cauvery but without it their crops will fail. Similar stories in Tanjore,TN, i think there will be a regional food inflation. TN needs to move from rice paddy to millets on whole scale.

Sorry to see tamil people trashed in Bangalore, buses burnt, A2B attacked in indiranagar, mysore road etc. Wonder whats going on in TN.

Bangalore already has acute water shortage, wonder where this will head. I am wondering in legal terms does drinking water supply trump irrigation water supply ? SC order will have to be kept so more water to meetur area i think.

its KPN bus depot, its a private  bus service that operates between Bangalore and Chennai. This is so bad. apparently 35 busses burnt. Never seen arson of this scale, complete failure of Govt machinery or they are complicit.

Look both sides have farmers whose lifeline depends on this river. TN people also need to understand that the number of farmer suicides in KA is one of the highest in India. So I dont think the karnataka farmers came all the way to bangalore to attack tamils.

Also the protests in TN aren't as serious as in KA. Here in Coimbatore, people and police are protecting KA registered buses when no one is even interested in vandalism and there in Bangalore, buses are burnt, TN registered cars are attacked, even attacking the tamil people who are born in Bangalore. I think this cauvery issue is just an excuse for bangalore thugs to beat up tamils and surely its politically motivated.

This is not a new thing because almost every TN peeps who own property in KA has been harrassed for years, but an average kannadigas dont hold such grudges. Getting 144 imposed due to a bunch of politically backed thugs is such a shame.

Yep. TN police has been protecting the KA buses and trucks for the last two days. Morons in FB are actually mocking that move and calling it as a cowardly act.

Threre are like thousands of KA registered cars owned by people just from cbe, most of then working in IT. So that wont be attacked for sure.

I know there is a sizeable population of TN registration vehicles in cv ramannagar/indiranagar/kaggdaspura area, i keep telling my friends there to get KA registrations. But all safe, i think its just the busses and lorries wonder who is behind this ? but the boy who got beat his video started this crazyness, then the rameshwaram video surfaced now this in Bangalore. I am pretty sure such junk will have an impact on property prices.

rameshwaram video where some guys showed the heroism is pretty stupid and should be punished along with the initial bangalore incident  ..

both were shared everywhere and beating the victim and forcing them to say jai karnataka or tamilnadu is pretty stupid..

Knowing about the southern TN police, those rameshwaram guys will surely get ladam. Not sure about those bangalore guys.

Never been a big fan of Bangalore's public vandalism ideas. They vandalized public and private property after the sad demise of the legendary actor Rajkumar. I mean, why?

To be fair to Southern TN police most were deployed in Paramakudi due to Immanuel Sekaran anniversary and it's volatile history .

The irony in that is all KPN busses are either Karnataka registered or Pondicherry registered

In Bangalore, WFH orders from most companies that had the facility. Monday most streets in south and west bangalore had fire - tyres burnt, buses, lorries with TN lic plates were burnt. Shops and establishments associated with TN were vandalized. These are not locals, some goonda elements backed by Congress. Now, they want CM to resign. This is a politically backed motive. KA congressis want Modi to intervene and cited even MMS intervened in 2012.

I don;t understand why does SC rule verdicts when there is water tribunal since 1991. There are rumors that the SC verdict influenced by SC judge Lalit who until 2014 was a Amma Lawyer fighting her court case in Bluru and this was Amma's payback time to KAR. This is all rumors and I don't think they are true. but a lot of such videos are going viral and no sensible local will get on the street to protest. This is a total political instigated riot, CM and parties want votes for next election.

Disappointed with local TV chnls showing videos in repeat mode and talking about it and then claim that these videos caused the violence on the street. immature media, hv to be banned to start with. Police are asking citizens to stop spreading rumors, when they have these stupid TV channel blasting videos and rumors . Police and to tell vable operators to block all local news channels. Downright third class folks run these channels.

Exactly. Farmers won't burn things to get water. The attackers have nothing to do with the cauvery issue. This is a completely organized vandalism.

There isn't much problem in TN except some random incidents around.
