Over the past week, we have been asking you to have your say on who you think deserves to be selected in India's Greatest XI as a way of celebrating their 500th Test match, starting on Thursday in Kanpur.

From the greatest openers, the best of a swathe of middle-order batting stars, the wicketkeepers, the quicks and a host of spinners, you've had your say on who you think deserves to make the cut.

From the more than 50,000 votes cast, your selection for India's Greatest Test XI is:

The full breakdown of the results is below, showing several clear-cut winners in their respective categories, led by MS Dhoni who won 93 per cent of the vote as India's greatest wicketkeeper-batsman.

The tightest battle was for the No.5 and No.6 positions, with VVS Laxman a clear victor for one spot and former skipper Sourav Ganguly just edging out current captain Virat Kohli for the other spot in the batting order.

Unsurprisingly, the side had a distinctly modern feel; all but Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev played Test cricket since the year 2000, underlining the unprecedented period of success Indian cricket has enjoyed so far this century.

Gavaskar is joined by modern day powerhouse Virender Sehwag at the top of the order while Rahul Dravid and Sachin Tendulkar were the unsurprising choices to fill the No.3 and No.4 positions.

Allrounder Dev is partnered by left-armer Zaheer Khan in a two-man pace attack, while leg-psinner Anil Kumble and offie Harbhajan Singh bring plenty of variety - and more than 1000 Test wickets - to the spin attack.

Personally, I'd pick Ash instead of Bhajji, and Srinath instead of Ganguly, considering the XI has to be for all conditions. Picking 2 spinners and only 2 seamers for tests in countries like Eng, Aus, Sa, NZ is downright silly.

The above has bowling for all conditions. Leg spin of Kumble, off spin of Ashwin. Right arm swing of Kapil, left arm swing of Zak and right arm seam/pace of Srinath. Pacers will be a good foil to spinners at home and spinners will be a good foil to pacers abroad.

 

Batting has good depth without compromising the bowling. Top 5 are excellent. Late middle order of 6-8 is good too. 9-11 are no mugs and can contribute decently.

 

Dravid would be my captain for that team.

I voted in this team selection.

 

This team is for test matches only.

 

It wasn't  a  " pick any player choice " ....  

 

You had to choose the openers from a  list.....then 3 and 4 from another list ....and so on....ending with 2 spinners from a list

 

2 pacers and 2 spinners were available for selection

 

Kohli was perhaps the only current test  player available for selection ....there was no Ashwin

 

I personally chose Kohli, Srinath and Bedi ....in place of  Ganguly, Zaheer and Harbhajan....the rest are all the same

 

Would have chosen Ashwin  in place of Bedi if that option were available. On seaming tracks, the third fast bowler would be Zaheer

Attack of all conditions ept batting depth reason for selecting gupte is he was a genuine turner of a ball with an excellent googly, Mankad and Kapil are all rounders, Mohd nissar, a genuine fast bowler of his time, probably the first in our country, with guile of zak, you have bowlers for every conditions also Sehwag provides a useful spinning option as well, in batting a opener like Sehwag, with calm Gavaskar, the composed Dravid with stroke players in Mankad, Tendulkar and vishi, with power hitters like ms and Kapil paaji

Yeah. But the thing is most of us haven't seen players before 1980s.

 

Even among the modern(ish) players, Vishy, Azhar, Vengsarkar, Amarnath etc. are arguably better batsmen than Ganguly.

Kohli or Rahane would be better picks than any of the above IMHO.

 

Ganguly, Azhar, Vishy, Amarnath and Vengsarkar ....all had more weaknesses than these two in their overall games and  had lesser averages and lesser rate of big scores.

 

The current day fitness and fielding would be added pluses and so would be the current day professionalism.

Azhar averaged 49 at no 5 scoring 4000 runs in 72 tests.

 

While I agree on fitness and professionalism part, difficult bowling of 90s is missing today.

His overall average is  45.03  from  99 tests.  

 

He averaged  36.4 away from home.

 

He also had problems  against the both  short ball and the moving ball  from pacers.

He was much superior batsmen against spin bowling.

 

Rahane hasn't played much and for Kohli - Azhar was averaging 48 in first 45 matches with away average of 42.

This team has  many good players of spin....a batsman who can attack quick bowling and has a high average against them would make the team more complete.  Kohli averages 62  , 68 and  71  in   Australia, South Africa and NZ...with a poor average only in England.

 

Azhar averaged 19 in the West Indies,  23  in South Africa and 27  in  Australia...the 3 best fast bowling attacks of his era.  That is a huge negative.

 

Azhar being removed from the team because of match fixing is also a big negative  and i don't want such a player to represent India.
