I know that he is a joke these days ever since he made that god awful AAG...I mean seriously what was he thinking remaking Sholay and messing it up like that? and ever since that the guy has not been the same, He has made some terrible movies which will make some youtube short films by amateur filmmakers look like mainstream cinema.

Also the guy personally has lost it....I have seen him in Telugu media especially giving sensationalist comments and trying to stay relevant.....it was whoa initially then it became WTF then it was kind of annoying but now it is plain sad what once a great innovative film maker has become.

Looking at how pathetic he has become,it is easy to forget that this is the guy who tried to change Indian cinema for the good.

I was hearing an interview of one of the guys who worked with him...a seasoned supporting actor.....so apparently there was a scene in the 80's where he backstabs his boss...so verma who was the director or the assistant director then asked him, what would be his reaction and the guy belted out this typical filmi villan cunning expression and Verma asked him"why would you do that?" "wouldn't u feel guilty backstabbing a guy who trusts you and pays your salary?" "try giving me a guilty expression"...The actor was amazed because even though he knew verma was right and this isn't rocket science exactly, the thinking he had for Indian cinema in the 80's was still far far ahead.

This might just seem like a very small irrelevant example but this is the guy who revolutionized horror, crime and thriller genre.....in fact Rangeela as a rom com was pretty awesome even though you don't associate it with Verma's brand of cinema.

I still think Satya is one of the top 10 movies ever made in Bollywood.....Kaun is grossly underrated.......Raat and Bhoot were a change from the Zee Horror Show kind of horror we were used to in the 90's....Hell even Rakta Charitra movie was a precursor to Gangs of Wesseypur.

This is the guy who gave everyone with talent a shot...I mean is there anyone else who has introduced more new and exciting talents than this guy?

I know Verma is now a butt of jokes and ridicule and he has himself to blame for this....but if you ask me he is one of the pioneers of Indian cinema and should be counted long with the greats...his personal attitude doesn't help but can't deny this guy's contribution and talent.

He made some good movies, so I like him well enough. Company, Bhoot, Satya,Rann and Sarkar were all good in my opinion.

@maniacI agree wholeheartedly with your view. He really made gangster genre cool. He was at one time at the very top of his game. But now sadly he has become downright pathetic. Instead of spending time on twitter if he sincerely makes a good movie even now he can regain his lost glory.

RGV has degenerated over time.

His first foray started with plots based on social realities in which characters were well developed and since the character was bigger than the actor who portrayed it, he scouted for the best new talent available. Manoj Vajpayee, Chakraborty, Urmila to an extent. Almost all his movies of this time are unique in the way they pan out. Some of his most underrated movies are also from this era. Kaun, Daud, Shool etc

He was then bit by the Bollywood bug and started hoping that the stars would carry off his plot. He still made some decent movies in that era but weren't as good as his earlier stuff. Eg: Company, Sarkar.

Finally he went full retard made stuff that had no plot whatsoever and even the stars who essayed those roles didn't try too hard.

He might have as well named it "RGV ki  pichwade ki Aag". He has gone senile since making Jungle. He has the worst cameraman, handheld handycam angles, his output has been worse than Subhash Ghai.

Agree....The guy still experiments like shooting a movie in a day or shooting a movie on the IPHONE Etc but it is just that he doesn't have the creative juices anymore or more like he has a great idea but halfway through he loses interest.

It happens with a lot of stars, they lose the subtlety that made them stand out in the first place to end up as caricatures as themselves.

Sharukh Khan was very subtle in Baazigar or even while playing the over the top Pshyco character in Darr.....same goes for Amir or Ajay Devgan, they just become over the top caricatures.

Surprisingly Akshay Kumar has gone in the opposite way...from the comical Ek Take or Babu Bhaiiya to more subtle potrayals in his recent movies.

I think RGV has become one of those caricatures too...he just takes being experimental or controversial or socially relevant too seriously without having the right direction(no pun intended) or creativity any more.

I don't think shooting a film only on I-phone for the heck of it means anything. Did it add anything to the script? Was it necessary?

Its more a stupid quirk/gimmick which serves no real purpose.

Would you hold Lata Mangeshkar in higher esteem if she sang Mehndi laga ke rakhna while bungee jumping?

That is exactly what I am saying Mariyamji......he has the right intention to do something different and path breaking but just looks creatively spent or just too close minded right now.

After seeing his racist tweets against Michelle obama i absolutely don't give a shi* about that asshole.

OK, I missed it somehow. Face color (blacker than now) was pun intended which is masqueraded as color preference here in India and not racism. College students make fun of somebody's skin color is not considered racist. They laugh at WI players in cricket stadiums and even Symonds whose skin is a touch fairer than most Indians, was mocked at, even in cities like Bombay. Indians are fascinated by white people, probably a colonial hangover, even Gandhi/Nehru were mesmerized by Brits.

About comparing First ladies, it was his 'tharki'ness speaking, and as usual sexism is also a joke for some people here.

This is exactly the point I am trying to make in my OP...the guy has totally lost it and has becoming an attention seeker...now he might have actually meant it or done it to get attention (doesn't justify it either ways) but seeing someone like RGV behaving like a Kamaal R Khan is so sad in so many ways.

this is a guy not just me but every actor or technician who worked with him rates him as a genius filmmaker but he is literally peeing on his legacy and what will remain of him is an attention seeking troll.

my op is not rating him as a human being...there are plenty of shitty human beings who are geniuses  e.g. Steve Jobs. Obviously Jobs got enough credit...but I am assuming  this guy is losing his marbles because he thinks he is under appreciated and hence this attention seeking.

that is why my op...I mean here is a guy who is a sad shadow of his former self but how would he be remembered within the realms of film making?

Mithun Chakraborty - is he remembered for all the blockbusters of 70s and 80s or his B-grade output of the 90s (Gunda, etc)? That will answer to the OP's question

Mithun's B-grade trash have become cult classics because of the overall absurdity of the plot/ the dialogues. RGV's B-grade trash is forgotten within a week of its release. Nothing to remember there. Most people can't even sit through the 'spectacle' once. There in lies the major difference.

PS: I think Gunda is overhyped, at least the 25 mins that I saw.

Satya is in all time top 10 hindi movies ever made

Company should make it to the all time top 50 i guess.

he is very egoistic and arrogant. thinks he is the sole reason why he made good movies in his early career. he forgot that many intelligent and passionate people like a r rahman, amir khan, sridevi, kashyap etc... collaborated with him and he was able to give high quality output.

the moment he dumped high quality cinematographer for amatuers, shot making went complete haywire. people usually get a migraine watching his movie's camera effects thesedays

when he dumped high quality music directors for morons... more deterioration happened to the output.

casting idiots and plastic dolls was the death knell

i think Sarkar Raj was the first i realized that his standards have gone down... he is almost finished now since he refuses to believe that he ever makes a mistake

like i said... too much ego.

even amitabh bachchan made mistakes with ABCL... but he owned it up and set things right
