Doesnt matter, these things work step wise

1. Score heavily in domestic- he has done that. He has scored so heavily that he has grabbed everyone attention

2. If given a chance for India-A- score runs their to or try next season(like iyer failed). But if he does

3. What Extra does he offer- Dont know about his fielding but there are mentions that he bowl right arm medium . That can be a handy option

4. If he gets a chance in ipl - Thats a platform- show what ur capable of , score runs and how impactful those runs are(like Rahul did) and that would be icing on the cake

5. If u still dont get selected - score next season heavily again so that ur not called one season wonder. 

 

If he keeps doing all right, sooner or later it will happen. We do not have many openers kicking the door. Whatever few are their, are almost in same position of him.

Good he can bowl, so based on his ground n record breaking season he should be in A team n then see how he does, past records don't matter as much as a guy can mature n take the batting or bowling to next level.

WADR, I would pick the guy who also has 1000+ runs, avg = 72, SR = 102. Although SR is itself irrelevant for tests, it points to total domination of domestic attacks

Priyank Panchal slammed 1270 runs in nine games at a average of 97.69,  Panchal looks set to finish as the top run-getter of the Ranji Trophy this season by a significant distance. This tally includes five hundreds, the most by any batsman in the competition, with an unbeaten 314 against Punjab at Belgavi being his best score.

 

Mumbai have already had a taste of what the 26-year-old can do, when he cracked 232 against the defending champions at Hubbali in the league stage to help Gujarat take the first innings lead against the Ranji giants. The opener had enjoyed a prolific time with the bat in the previous Ranji season too, having scored 665 runs in eight games at 55.41, including three hundreds.

We got to take chances sometimes and draft these guys to A side or board president x1 games, especially against teams like Australia who are about to tour.

 

Even though he has had only one prolific season like this, he looks old and mature enough to play at big level now. Some people just get better when they are 24-26 even though they might have been around domestic cricket since their teen years.

 

You never know, after few good more performances, he might be sitting in our national team's middle order after Kohli . Got to give these guys more chance to play against top teams when they are in their prime form.

2 good seasons in a row....it means, he has to be looked in

But he doesn't get people pant-gasming over his potential since he's not a recent teeny-bopper.  Any new prospect over 25 has to be bradmanesque at FC level for multiple seasons to win over fans too busy blowing their wads over the next 19 year old Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, Pant, Joy Bishta.   Can you believe there was a thread on Bishta when he had played a total of 2 FC games for Mumbai?  He just got dropped from Mumbai FC.

Age has definitely been a factor for fans to take interest in a player but hardly the only one.

 

Priyank Panchal starting playing those big innings, quite late this season.  Ranji started in the beginning of October last year and he started churning those big scores from 21 November 2016.  ( List below with dates ).  He was averaging less than 40 in FC  before November 21, as far as I remember.  Why would fans be excited about such a player ?  Last season, when he averaged 55 with three 100s, is nothing special in Ranji and many do that.

 

The moment he has started to have an extraordinary season, and had played 2 big knocks of 200+ and 300+. ....there was a lot of attention on him and he was being discussed regularly.

 

Another issue is watching the players in action..... people liked the way Pant batted in the IPL and smashed Bhuvi and the Fizz for multiple sixes....... Bista scored a 100+ at 90+ SR in the last Irani Trophy match against the Rest of India  ( that means good opposition ) and the match was televised and people watched him bat...... Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson also played the IPL and people saw them play some interesting knocks.....I don't think anyone here have seen Panchal bat....and this is a very important point. It is not possible to like someone just by looking at scores and stats.

 

The next issue is  the type of player....... fans typically like watching stroke players the most ..... then genuine fast bowlers....then big spinners of the ball.   These types of players get much more attention and like from fans.  Pant, Samson, Bista, and  Iyer are all stroke players....and people like watching 6s and 4s in their spare time than a batsman blocking.

 

The next issue is media coverage.  Pant, Iyer and even Samson had a lot of articles written on them because coaches had labelled them better than average talents.  All the identified talents don't become international players because some of them may lack temperament and focus....but those who get media coverage will be the ones fans will know about more.

 

The last issue is the quality of opposition players in Ranji Trophy.  Barring a couple of good teams, most have a very limited number of good bowlers or batsmen ....and so, just by themselves, Ranji stats do not carry sufficient meaning. There have been literally hundreds of  top Ranji performers who have failed in international cricket over the years.  When a player looks good and also scores runs / or picks wickets / or  is said to be fast  in Ranji, then fans start  taking  interest in them.

How are people calling him as an allrounder  and making videos is amazing to me.He did have a great season but an Indian opener with average in mid 40s is not going to get a call from selectors but if he scores massive both in Ranji finals and Irani trophy he will get a call.

Agree that Panchal is more a Faiz Fazal than a KL Rahul at this point.  But the point I was making is that to dismiss him because he's too old at 26 is silly.

Age should not stop Panchal from getting chances provided he is good enough for international cricket.

 

Besides, 26 is not that old either for batsmen, unless they are primarily hand-eye coordination dependent  players.

Dhawan averaged mid 40s, same was Vijay.

Vijay was called up after a mammoth stand of 462 and it certainly helped Srikanth was chief selector then, Dhawan was already in IPL and had played in under 19s and India A by then. For Panchal this year is his break out season.He has no other experience either IPL or India A.He has been around since 2008 but no IPL franchise offered anything to him so he is very much an unknown commodity.

 

If he does well in finals he will get more eyes on him.
