Rohit failed in middle order, but once he started opening, he has delivered big time. he has played more matches as an opener than as a middle order batsman. In fact, Rohit started opening pretty much at the same time as Dhawan's selection for Indian team and both has been opening since CT 2013. I dont know why are you bringing Rohit's failure as a middle order batsman now. Even then he was only as big a failure as Yuvraj was in his first 5 years who averaged 32 in ODIs between 2001 and 2005 playing 137 matches and Rohit averaged 30 between 2007 and 2012 playing 85 matches. So, there is not much difference between the two, both picked at 19-20 years of age. Yuvraj only blossomed after 2005, Rohit did the same from 2013 when he got promoted as an opener. Should we bring Yuvraj's long rope and failure now of his 5 years? What clueless you keep saying in every post. We all know Rohit has done well in last 2 years or so as opener. Why you wasting your energy by rephrasing the same thing again. All I said that no one is reserved for 2019 world cup and you come up with detail on ara of explaining Rohits career. He has sucked in middle order in te past and adjusted as opener and has been doing wel there. That is a fact and we need to move on. No one is sure shot for opening in world cup 2019. It is long long way away and if you keep your form good by 2018ish, then only one can see that player as permanent opener for 2019.

Rahul can be used as make shift opener. That is the point I made. Thats all. You should start watching more games before you rule out Rahul never opened in IPL You think i did not know he open? I knew he opened but was not a designated opener. Kohli opened too for RCB, does that man he is an opener? Rahul is an opener of course for Karnataka, but not as a designated opener for any other team. He played IPL for Hyderabad before and did not open there. Also, I would like him to bat at 4 in middle order. He is the best player in this team to bat at that number as he has the game, every gear in his book. Edited January 7, 2017 by rkt.india

You are unlikely to find better replacement in such a short time. Every team carries players who have tasted success and has experience. You are not going to find too many new players to replace these guys successfully in 2 years' time. Yes, there will be young players, but will lack experience and might not be as successful. Rohit and Dhawan are two of the most successful openers ever in ODIs and they have done well in ICC tourneys and are not too old. Good enough to carry for next 2 years.

This the most imprtant part which I have been trying to tell you and hence I say no one is permanent. I mean how can a guy who has played just 3 games only in ODI for India, Rahul, can be a permanent or sure shot for 2019 world cup. He is a prospect and will remain a prospect for now unless he does well over a period of time.

Regarding Rahul, for me he has been the biggest revelation for us in the last 1 year or so, find of the year and he is here to stay irrespective of him being only played 3 ODIs.

No I prophesized about kohli in 2007. He will do all right to be dominating in 2019 and before and even after. And I agree on Rahul, he looks promising. I have more faith in Rahul than Rohit Sharma actually. Ankit_sharma03 1
CG Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Lot of players have those problems, Cook has scored 10k plus runs without ever knowing fully where his offstump is, IMHO Yuvi struggled in tests because he tried to be different when playing tests. If he had played his natural game chances for him succeeding were greater but he was trying to displace guy like VVS so it was hard and I feel thats why he tried too hard in tests. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk No if you are suspect outside offstump along with problem against short ball you will find it hard in test cricket .Cook has problems outside offstump particularly if ball is pitched full but he is very good playing cut and pull.
BeautifulGame Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Rohit is the best opener in International cricket .He isn't going anywhere . The only problem is when he is paired with Rahane .With Rohit himself being a slow starter having Rahane as partner completely ruins us for the powerplay. Dhawan and Rohit is a pretty good combo. Arguably our best opening pair after Sachin-Ganguly . No reason why they should be doubtful in the plans for 2019 world cup.
Forever Indian Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 IMO Dhawan's days are numbered. He was all along good only in the ODI format, and even in that he woudn't be as consistent as before because of two reasons: 1) He is 32 on paper and maybe 37 or so real age so his best days are over 2) He is a confidence player and him being dropped from tests and not scoring runs in Ranji would have a large bearing Ankit_sharma03 1
Ultimate_Game Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Some very poor selections... Rahane should not be anywhere near India's shorter format teams. And Yuvraj is done at intl level and no point continuing with him. I would prefer likes of Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Kedar Jadhav, Karun Nair etc. given a go in odis & T20s. SecondSlip 1
Lannister Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Yuvi is a better bet than Dhoni as a power hitter. This is how I would like to see in the future. Dhawan, Pant, Rahul, Kohli, Rohit, Pandya, Yuvi and the bowlers. At least until CT is over. Cricketics 1

Dhoni was comfortably our 2nd best batsman after Kohli. It was painful to see Yuvraj struggle against decent bowlers and his struggles have continued since 2012-13. It's time a youngster is given chances in his stead given CT and WC will be played away from the sub-continent. SecondSlip and Cricketics 2
fineleg Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Only thing is - if Yuvi is in the 11 and struggles with runs (or strikerate) in first couple of ODIs - then Kohli should say enough is enough - and drop him from the last 3 ODIs. Whether Kohli will do that or not - if such situation arises? remains to be seen.

My biggest worry is Yuvi somehow manages decent performances against a poor Eng team and is then picked for CT where he ends up costing us against better teams. I won't put the onus of selecting or dropping Yuvi on Kohli as he's not a selector and it's unfair for a young captain in his first series to make such kind of decisions. Selectors should be helping him instead of forcing him to make such calls at this stage of his captaincy.

Next 8 games are really crucial. Actually, next 3 games, as if he doesn't do well here in this series and Pant does okay in 2020, they might bring Pant in for Dhawan for the next ODI series. It's time a youngster is given chances in his stead given CT and WC will be played away from the sub-continent. You both have valid points however, both are different kind of bats. Yuvi hasn't shown his ability to hit like before much since he hasn't played much 50 overs. He did show some spark before worldt20 against Sri Lanka in the asia cup. He is sort of returning back now to 50 overs international cricket, so a big test for him. He has the same pressure which Dhawan has, he has to perform or many are waiting to replace him. Though one thing which can go in huge favor of Yuvi is that if he can bowl good 6-7 overs for Kohli, Kohli will be enticed to play him over Kedar Jadhav every time. Time will decide but Yuvi has to perform well with the bat. That is his prime job. Luckily for Yuvi, he could play as many as six games in next few weeks(3,3).
kosingh Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 Pictures can be misleading but Yuvi seems to have worked very hard on his fitness in the last few months. That, along with a recent 177 and 260 in Ranji....plus the lack of punch hitters.....why the heck not. tweaker 1
SecondSlip Posted January 7, 2017 Posted January 7, 2017 (edited) Selecting Yuvraj in the ODI squad was a very stupid move. He has been a complete passenger in the ODI team ever since World Cup 2011 Failed vs Pak in 2012 (Aane Do Series) Failed vs England in 2013 (Raina was MOS) Failed vs Australia in 2013 (Scored duck after duck on pitches where even 350 was par) Failed vs West Indies in 2013 (Struggled very badly against Narine) Then finally, played his last ODI innings in Johannesburg and scored a first ball duck on the same pitch where SA scored 350-4 People are talking about his "big hitting ability" but where is it? Where were these hits at the T20 world Cup in both 2014 and 2016? He played all of India's matches in the 2014 World T20, and would probably have done the same in 2016 had he not twisted his ankle while batting against Australia in Mohali. He struggled in both tournaments, as his strike rates - 98.03 in 2014 and exactly 100 in 2016 suggest. This is our best late order power hitter in the country? Seriously?
