maniac Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 The Good (Thoughtful moves) Rishabh Pant in T20 squad-Most excited I have ever been for a youngster's debut in a while Chahal in the T20 squad- Performed really well in Zimbabwe and glad selectors kept him in mind and are persisting with him. Which means there is a follow up and consistency in selections. Shikhar Dhawan only in the ODI squad- Another very good selection. Dhawan has an excellent ODI record. His failures in overseas tests and the fact that he has always been a poor T20 player have always overshadowed his ODI record and vice versa his ODI exploits always guaranteed him a place in T20. I think the selectors got it spot on. Raina in the T20 squad- Probably the only player in the squad who can go from ball 1...Has been poor in ODI's and has rightfully been dropped in favor of other deserving players but can't deny his utility in T20 especially in SC conditions.Good decision. Hardik Pandya back in T20's-I think he is tailor made for this format and needs to play in every game. Still I don't think he is good enough at the test level but his selection in both LOI formats is a good move The Bad ( Backward steps) Nehra and Yuvraj-Nothing against them, They are still fit, performing at various levels-Yuvraj in Domestics...Nehra in WT20 and IPL this year but what is the long term value of these players? Yuvraj has not played ODI in 3 years and don't think he will be part of the WC 2019 plans and Nehra is not a solution keeping in mind next WT20 is in 2020. For all the forward steps taken, this is a pretty huge backward step. Let your sentiments and emotional attachments to these players who have done well not cloud your judgement. This is a backward step. The Ugly(50-50 decisions- Can't entirely blame them to not touch anything here but should have shown some more vision. Argument can be made both ways) Ajinkya Rahane- time and time again has proved that he is not a good ODI cricketer but with Rohit injured, his experience and his skill gets him another shot.Time is ticking for him in this format. Wouldn't have been surprised even if he was dropped but at the same time not too bothered when he is picked. Kedar Jadhav-Did decently in every opportunity he has got. So picked on that and that is totally fair but at the same time,it is pretty evident that he doesn't have a long-term USP....not the best of fielders....his bowling got him some lucky wickets but in an ideal scenario, not even good enough to be the 6th bowler...7th at best....Struggles against pace but is very good against spin....But credit where due,has cashed in so far. Ravindra Jadeja in T20- Jadeja was always a good ODI cricketer but he has been time and time again very poor in the T20 format. His accurate darts will not help on T20 pitches and he doesn't have the power hitting game at least from what he has shown so far in this format. Looks like his test success and his automatic selection in ODI's have clouded selectors judgement here. Overall I would give the selectors 7.5/10 for this effort. Good stuff. putrevus Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Selection of Yuvraj shows one thing which is very clear, there are no big hitters in Indian cricket right now. Who is the one player who can at least in theory match Yuvraj's late order hitting. sandeep and tweaker 2
renjith Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Yuvraj got 672 runs at an avg of 84 this Ranji season. He can also bowl 4-5 decent overs. Imo Yuvraj is not a bad selection provided there is no other outstanding performers at present with those skills. Rahane and nehra are bad choices. The most bafling selection is the seamers in A teams. Even dump fools won't pick vk, Dinda, kaul and nehra ahead of rajput, nathu, aniket and siraj. sandeep, Ironhide and tweaker 3
fineleg Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) 4/10 for selectors if you look at warm up squads also. Zero vision. Rayudu?? Bowlers??? Edited January 6, 2017 by fineleg express bowling and New guy 2

BeautifulGame Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Next T20 world cup is in 2018 . So Nehra is a realistic option. If he is continuing to perform in IPL and national colours , he should be picked .At least until we find another good left arm seamer. Also he is generally a very good mentor for youngsters too. Agree with picking the likes of Yuvi and Rahane .Awful selections .At least with Yuvi, maybe his decent domestic form has deserved a call up but continuing to pick Rahane is just clueless .It's not just that affecting our ODI form but also badly affecting his test form as well.He could have used these Odis to play Ranji trophy games and improve his form and skill against spin.We are unnecessarily causing damage to both test and odi team with this selection. Not sure about Pant, his terrific form has been in Ranji so should have been picked for the test team first .I really don't like picking players for one format based on another .Hopefully he gets a decent run at top of the order in T20s . Two non selections I like is Dhawan not in T20 team and Axar Patel out of both squads. Cricketics 1

Dhoni will mentor next generation of batsmen not just wicket keeper .but whoever is part of the team because he is the most experienced player , just like he did the previous generation of players like Kohli Rohit Raina etc.Similarly Nehra will help out the seamers playing alongside him. This is basic stuff .These have remote relation to the legacy of Dhoni. Also I really don't know why you are wanting to turn every other thread into Dhoni. Edited January 6, 2017 by BeautifulGame
vishalvirsingh Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 8 on 10 to selectors. I do feel they made 2 mistakes. Ashwin should have been rested. I feel uv is not that fit to play international matches.he could prove me wrong as he is now 70 percent of what he was b4 his illness but who knows even a 70 percent Uv cud be better than others. Ishant bowled well in test n could have been given a chance.
bowl_out Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Agree with most points.. Except the building a team part for the T20 WC.. C'mon, T20 is supposed to be a fun, adapt quickly, may hay on your day format... I really don't mind Nehra playing T20s even until a few months before the T20 WC.. He has been accurate in IPL and the T20 WC and deserves a go if he is fit.. Raina only in the T20 squad and Dhawan only in the ODI squad are welcome steps.. Would have liked to see Krunal in place of Jadeja in the T20 squad
G_B_ Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Pant better perform... A lot of posters have hyped him up a lot on this form. A bit unfair on the youngster Sent from my Wileyfox Swift using Tapatalk Cricketics 1
Cricketics Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 Those accurate darts which you are calling about Jadeja was the only reason India won the series 3-0 in Australia when we won the T20 series there. Jadeja is one of those bowlers who has more control on his bowling than any other spinner in the world just because the kind of action he has. There are times when batsmen is going crazy like they did yesterday against Yasir Shah and bowlers especially spinners do not have enough pace and control to stop a batsman like Warner or Lynn or Gayl. That is when a spinner like a Jadeja is affective and needed the modt. He won us the first 2 twenty20s in Australia just alone by his own spell. Finch and co would have cleaned up and made the mess of our big totals. They got crazy starts but Jadeja's spell because of his accuracy, would always put them back. I will always play Jadeja in twenty20. The format is perfect for the dude. He can hit, bowl good 4 overs and can field. Probably one of the best complete twenty20 players going around and very underrated for the format.
Cricketics Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 And regarding Yuvraj and Rahane, I am happy with Yuvi's selection but not with Rahane's. We have tried enough of both and Yuvi to me is the one who is proven performer who had a more than decent comeback until he was injured and withdrew his name from the worldt20. So he was doing fine and people have short memories about that and hence are surprised to see his name pop up. Rahane is my concern. He is my first choice in Test Cricket but not in this format. He might score an odd 70 odd and might keep his place. I like the player but he is the player who would suit well in the era or in the times of 2003 world cup. His game is good enough for him to score good runs in a series but his game actually might cost us matches. His type of players are needed in teams like Pakistan where no one puts price on their wicket and they always need someone who can at least score 30s and 40s consistently. India does not need that. India needs olayers who can actually rotate. The game has changed since the 2003 world cup and now you got to rotate more and Rahane seems to do that more in test that than in the format where he should be doing more, like ODI's. express bowling Posted January 6, 2017 Posted January 6, 2017 (edited) What is the biggest requirement of our LOI teams nowadays ? What is the area where these teams needed improvement ? Big hitters at No.5 and / or No.6 who are proper batsmen too....they should be big hitters but NOT Afridi type hacks Have the selectors addressed this issue ? In T20I team....yes, partly.....Pant has been introduced. In the ODI team....NO.....Yuvraj has been introduced but he has shown in the recent past that he has lost his ability to hit quick bowlers....and that is what he is going to find if he were to bat from the 40th to the 50th over in England. Most of the rest of the team sort of select themselves. Not much decision making by the selectors there. Pandya was already in the ODI team and a certainty if fit and Dhawan is a top ODI performer in the last 2 years....including them were not specific decisions that were taken by the selectors. Leaving out Dhawan and Rahane in T20s are two good decisions but Rahane is still left in the ODI team. In the India A teams.....Introducing only one new quick in the form of Sangwan....no Shardul Thakur, Nathu Singh, Md. Siraj etc......choosing Vinay, Dinda, Kaul etc.....again, the only area where some decision was warranted has been messed up in the A teams. In a nutshell, I would say that apart from leaving out Rahane and Dhawan in T20Is....where ever some true decision was needed in team selection, the selectors have not taken the right one while selecting these 4 teams. Yuvraj had shown in in the Asia cup, especially against Sri Lanka that he can still score quickly. He was supposed to be in 2020 world cup, the tournament after world cup but injured his ankle and withdrew. After that, we did not play much in twenty20s. So he never got a chance again. India played two twenty20 at the last minute in Florida and Yuvi did not feature there. So they have gone with the right choice. Our ODI team needs a proven performer like Yuvi over 4 youngsters right before a major tournament. He is fit and scoring runs and if you can play twenty20 then you can surely play ODI's. As long as he can rotate and support Kohli and Dhoni, we are in good hands. Unless you know better hitter down the order who has also proven that he can rotate. Also remember, we have been just a slightly decent odi team in ODI's from a while and now we do not have Rohit Sharma also, a senior ODI bat who has scored runs for us in recent history. So only Kohli and Dhoni are the ones who might have had to take too much pressure of scoring runs. So perfect time to have a senior like Yuvi in the ODI team to take some weight oft the shoulders of Dhoni and Kohli. tweaker 1
