Cricketics Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 It is no rocket science that this is a turning track and that 3 spinners would have been handy here. Him not playing Jayant could delay the inevitable result but still Kohli went with an extra seamer instead of a spinner to ensure he take a chance and use that third seamer in Indian conditions, a combination which we do not get many times to play in India. I think play Bhuvi over Jayant, the spinner was a brilliant because Kohli is focussing on not just relying on spinners for victory. He saw that we have opposition in Bangladesh and took his chance and played an extra seamer. It is the thought and the ability to think that matters and I am glad he is thinking of developing this pace culture in the country. We need such thinking from the captain. It might not pay off right now, eventually it would. Another bold decision was Kohli choosing Rahane over Nayar, which for me was no brainer but with a 300, many captains might have picked a 300 ton scorer citing that to develop the future we need to give such guys chances. Even though it is not right to drop a player who has scored a triple ton, it would have been unfair to keep Rahane out, who has had a prolific 15-20 months and was our best test batsman until few months ago. Showing faith in his fellow seniors like Rahane is a good sign by Kohli. Kohli is an unconventional captain, and we needed this big time. Since the departure of Sehwag from test cricket, our test team hasn't been doing much unconventional stuff. This is the right way forward. Kohli and this team are headed the correct way. tweaker Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 (edited) Instead of Ishant,Umesh & Bhuvi ,Virat could have selected Pandya to see how he bowls in test. How could you drop a player who has scored a 300 in his last innings. Kohli had different yardstick for different player. He dropped Pujara to keep Rohit in the squad Edited February 9, 2017 by tweaker Lord and Sidhoni 2
tweaker Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Kohli could have made unconventional decisions by selecting Kuldeep & Pandya in the squad considering he is going to play against Bangladesh Bleed-Blue, Ankit_sharma03, express bowling and 2 others 5

Bhuvi too does not get much chances as when Shami is available, Bhuvi sits out sll the time as Umesh and Shami are the ones picked picked ahead. So he saw an opportunity, and then played Bhuvi. You can not discard or not give a chance to a player who has been part of your squad for a while. New guy 1
rkt.india Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 how is it a turning track? No one in the morning said it is a turning track. It had some grass and the reason they picked BK.
rkt.india Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Quote "A lot of grass over there, it's a nice covering, an even covering all through," says Sunil Gavaskar for the broadcaster's pitch report. "The fast bowler's will like it for the first two hours."

You probably did not watch the start of the third session when pitch was spinning big time and some of Kohli's shots went to boundary around the third man region were misjudged due to the spin. Pitch is good for spinners and should also help seamers a bit. tweaker 1
sandeep Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 Nothing unconventional about staying with Rahane. It was an obvious choice to all but band-wagoning fanboys who don't understand cricket that well. King Tendulkar 1

Yeah, majority wanted Rahane on this forum as you can see here but there were some who also wanted Nair and then there were people like your boy - Maniac who did not want either of the two, but someone else instead.
Stuge Posted February 9, 2017 Posted February 9, 2017 He can get away with such selections against the likes of Bangladesh but such risks are not feasible against the likes of Australia.I still feel three spinners should have played instead of just two .

I would have been really disappointed if Karun had played ahead of Rahane . I know he just scored a 300 , but Rahane is a proven world class player and just cos his form has been iffy in the last few matches you cannot chuck some one like that out . In the past he did two blunders , picking Rohit ahead of not just pujara , but also droping Vijay . I can imagine what a confidence blow after having done so well and arguably was among our Two best Test bat .

Bangladesh is more susceptible to pace, decent against spin and this pitch had a bit of grass in the morning. Hence 3 pacers. Australia is poor against spin and much better against pace. I expect 3 spinners to play and Md. Shami and Jayant Yadav to replace 2 of the 3 seamers in this team. Edited February 9, 2017 by express bowling

You know you have to give Ribbit boy some slack when it comes to tailunt. All schools have a few "special" children. Don't burst their bubble. Let them carry on their "acumen" filled antics.
