MechEng Posted March 22, 2017 Posted March 22, 2017 'Talentless pup in IPL' - So much snobbery there. While test cricket is very important, it doesn't make limited overs cricket any less significant. The young players who get picked for IPL are not talentless, they get picked by franchises because they do have the skills to succeed in 20 overs cricket. As @Brainfade says, money isn't everything. It's the satisfaction one gets from his work which is important. Ultimate_Game 1

Pujara has every right to get better in shorter formats and pry his way back in IPL and shorter formats. He's mature enough to see that the changes he incorporates in his game doesn't affect his Test performance else he will lose that spot as well. At the end of the day Pujara has to figure out whether a bird in hand is worth two in the bush.

Tibarn Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Lions should have selected him, he's been working hard on his LOI game. Half the IPL teams buy young Aussies/Saffers at the auction who won't get even 1 game and will warm the bench in the tournament. One of them should've spent that money on Puj, even if it is just to sit on the bench.

Problem is Pujara's base price is too high. Ideally he should go for 10L or so coz he's not cut out for shorter formats, especially IPL. Maybe if Pujara lowes his base price some franchise can take a punt on him. Bleed-Blue 1

Fair enough, but his base was only 50 L. It's not like Ishant who asked for 2 cr. 50 L for an Indian international seems fair, but I guess 10 L would've given him a better chance. At 10 L he may make more money playing county cricket.

It's not about the money. It's about getting an opportunity to show and prove that you belong in shorter formats. TBH I wouldn't spend 50L on someone like Pujara who's not an automatic selection in T20s. I would rather spend 50L across 3 upcoming players who are more suited to T20s to add depth. Pujara has no chance unless he lowers his base price. He can up it if he is able to prove he belongs in T20 cricket.

So coupled with his single gear batting it is amssive negative in picking him even as a squad option. Ultimate_Game 1

PBN Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) How much do you want to play Test Match players? How much are they getting now? In IPL the higher bids max out around 10-12 crores. They say if you can play test, then you can play any format. How is Pujara not doing well in IPL as opener? I'm baffled... there's just slight tweaking you need to do as a player. Don't even need to hit sixes...there are plenty of gaps to play with. Pujara isn't able to play well even in ODIs, let alone t20. Then there's his poor running and fielding ( you can blame that on the knee injury to some extent). Let's face it the guy isn't good enough to adapt for some reason. As a kid, he was decent enough in LOIs with those drive but hasn't been able to up his stroke play in LOIs. Yeah before you say it, he 'doesn't' NEED to adapt for t20s blah blah.. but then he'll have to live with a lower pay grade than even some rookies courtesy IPL. Edited April 4, 2017 by PBN
PBN Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 Test cricket just doesn't appeal to the masses. The average person doesn't even know if the team reaches the #1 standing but the entire nation is standing on its feet clapping and cheering after you win a World Cup.
maniac Posted April 4, 2017 Posted April 4, 2017 (edited) As much as I understand the sentiments of fans here about Pujara but isn't it a matter of simple economics? I mean is the revenue generated by IPL equal to the revenue generated from test cricket? Now just because we have personal dislike for likes of Pathan bros,Raina,Uthappa,Rayudu,Karthik etc for not cutting it in international cricket-is it fair if the franchises pay them peanuts even if they perform decently for them, just because test specialists don't make the same money? I mean this is a billion dollar revenue generating league we are talking about here. As much as that graphic above paints a bleak picture of "IPL Hacks" getting more money than someone like Pujara-horses for courses how is that unfair? Infact from the graphic above it looks like Pujara is making more than a decent salary for just playing in one format. Sure it is real cricket and more prestigious but basic HR 101-More revenues for the company=Better salary+bonus Edited April 4, 2017 by maniac moniker, Lord and Ironhide 3

It's a shame that BCCI doesn't give a NOC to Indian players, otherwise he could maybe show his improvements in a foreign T20 league like BPL or CPL.
